Why can't they do a movie where Spock meets the beautiful mysterious Romulan Commander. Romulans would be great! Villains and tricky enough to keep the story line moving.

Don't forget that in moment they meet, Spock was way too experienced to let something like that to happen, and I think, he would let Kirk to see only what he deemed necessary for setting him back on track.
