The sinking of the Lusitania wasn’t just the torpedo hit itself, but also where it hit. The torpedo hit a transverse coal bunker that ran across the width of the ship just in front of the high-pressure steam boilers that fed the turbines. The bunker was empty after crossing the Atlantic, so the cold waters of the Irish Sea came flooding in and caused a second, more massive steam explosion as the metal of the boilers contracted due to the cold water and could no longer contain the high-pressure steam. That second explosion is what doomed the ship as it both cut the control lines between the bridge and the rudder as well as ceased feeding steam to the ship’s turbines, including those that powered her generators.
I love that the fact that the Lusitania was carrying munitions (thus making it a legitimate target) was very conveniently ignored.
Instead, the Germans are, just as conveniently, painted here as "sea terrorists".
The Germans knew that munitions were in the Lusitania. They warned governments and passengers alike not to cross the Atlantic aboard her. That's not a terroristic act. Terrorist do not warn their victims beforehand. Governments played down the threat, passengers got onboard, the ship was tragically sunk. It is a tragedy of war, not a terroristic one.
They claim Titanic broke up underneath the surface
@leoarc1061 absolutely true
AND she was classified as an Auxiliary Cruiser, ergo a legitimate target for the Germans. Convenient they left out the second explosion, already proven to be a boiler explosion in the 1990's.
@@johntaylorgorski7199 Good point. There's an interesting story on the second explosion alone.
I watched all episodes of "Drain the Oceans" last year. Now, "Drain the Oceans" is back on my TV every weekend. It's a great show with historical facts to watch. 💯🚢
Same! It’s on Disney Plus and I enjoyed watching the series. I’m surprised because I’m 27 and usually people my age hate history

The truth is that HMS Cressy, HMS Hogue and HMS Aboukir were not top notch ships as is stated in the documentary. In fact by 1914 they were obsolete and as third rate ships only equiped with reservists. But due to the war they were used for tasks that were beyong their survivability. And people knew it already at the time: the squadron had an ironic knickname: the "Live Bait Squadron". And that epitheth became a self-fulfilling prophecy...
The Brits were fine with enlisted drowning as they were members of the working class. They probably cared about losing the officers, however...
Exactly, the lose of the three battlecruisers at Jutland was far more impactful.
The truth is the "history channel" is now garbage profanation, attempting (and apparently succeeding) in rewriting history
Their sinking was no mystery - U 9
@@AlexJones4Skin This is National Geographic, not the History Channel". But you're right! These channels are now absolute garbage. Anyone who tries to learn history through them is doing it very, very wrongly.
I love Drain the Oceans series, a treasure.

yes iv been awaiting a new drain the ocens forever
The Lusitania was carrying arms and ammunition, her captain complained he was told to zip it. Fair target if you ask me, fair target according to the rules of war.
It was a legitimate target, yes. It's not by accident that this documentary decided to ignore that small but crucial detail.
and there was an "advertisement" to civilians from the geman embassy in the New Yrk Post, iirc, to stay away from this ship, because german spies allready knew this vessel would be carrying ammo and arms
Yeah but it doesn’t make you a hero to target an ocean liner
100%. The lies were just propaganda
Diving around all those munitions would worry me!

Hopefully, the episode Lost Giants will be uploaded as well.
There's 8 episodes of Lost Giants on History Channel.

Lusitania 18 minutes of terror
Está difícil de assistir qualquer coisa nesta plataforma, pois de cinco em cinco minutos tem propaganda, e ainda por cima, retiram as legendas traduzidas. Grato.
A U-Boat might as well be an actual reason why Titanic was sunk.
If it didn’t hit the iceberg, this would be its fate
The Germans posted big ads in British papers not to take ocean trips in the war zone and yet the British government allowed it. It has come to new knowledge that the British Government allowed the Lusitania to carry military munitions. This of course they don't mention. The one torpedo actually hit these shells and munitions NOT the ship plowing thru the water. That's nonesense. Guess the producers forgot this bit..
It ain't the size of the boat, it's the motion in the ocean. 😂
How does torpedoes possess enough kenetic energy to punch through armoured steel hull
You have the most amount of ads of any channel, shocking.
The RN's Q ships often spoiled the sneaky German subs' day.
Imagine Germany was smarter and decided to occupy Ireland and thus encircle Great Britain in a way and control the seas even better
That's some imagination.
@@robertclark972 not the most stupid thought, the Irish maybe would have enjoyed the idea of getting rid of the English. The French used this idea twice, afaik.

Lusitania had another explosion on the other side of the boat. With the name of the boat painted over and stuffed with explosives and ammunition its no wonder why she sunk in 16 minutes. Do the victims justice and tell the full story and how churchill sent the ship into those waters!
I agree though, Churchill should be blamed. He knew what he was doing. He needed the US in the war to win why not give the german uboats the perfect bait.
PS. My great great grandfather survived the sinking. He worked for Cunard and was luckily on deck when she was struck.
There was second explosion but, there's no proof it because of weapons. It might been the boilers or something else. Stop with conspiracy theories.
'Stuffed' is a gross overstatement. The wreck has been well explored. There was an insignificant amount of munitions on board.
@@stargazer5784 so ignisifant that you're not allowed to dive this wreck without special training, because explosive cargo ... realy???

This is an ocean not a joke.
THumbs down for portraying Lusitania as a peaceful victim. It had munitions. It was going into a war zone. Germany was attacked on both sides by 3 empires. They were the victims. Them stopping supplies from reaching the battle field is a reasonable action.
