  • Unit could not play CDs. I was able to get the unit into test mode, but the CD motor did not spin with a CD inserted. The lens only moved up and down a few times. Laser output using a laser power meter was determined to only be about 0.05 mW. In order to get a reading the laser power meter sensor had to be brought really close to the optical lens. No further testings was done. If a cheap laser head can be found, it will be installed.

This may sound ridiculous but you really helped me out with this video. I bought this reciever and tuner in 1999 and got it complete with surround, md player and cassettedeck. I got this set shelved for about 3 years and this morning i tried if my cassettedeck was still working. Of course it got jammed while i was rewinding the tape.i had to find out how to remove the exterior and you helped me out! Thank you... Now i got it functioning again by removing the stuck tape by hand! Kind of proud of myself now.

Thanks for watching and commenting. Good job with the unit; it's cool that you got it fixed. Those things aren't always that easy and straightforward to open.

You could try turning up the power to the laser, this will bring the output up

Aww classic plastic pioneer!!..lol...it is pretty neat looking though, i have never seen one like that!...so is it just a amplified cd player or does it have a tuner and a pre amp in it also?...cool laser tester!...do you use just store bought isopropyl alcohol?...i have had some luck cleaning the eye's with it at times, but have had some bad luck too...i've had some players that skip sometimes get worse after cleaning and one even died afterwords..so now i don't clean unless i think i absolutely have too!.. lol...i have read that it would be better to use some 100 prof alcohol from the liquor store as it it pure with no contaminants in it...some say the iso has a lot of water and is not clean...i've never tried the 100 prof....i don't get to the liquor store very often!..lol..

yeah, classic plastic! I forgot to mention that this thing is a stereo receiver; would be a cool unit if it wasn't plastic. there is a even a matching cassette player that i have--got to check that out...maybe. i use just store bought alcohol; i have even used plain water in a pinch, and i use q-tips. lint-free swabs are better. rubbing alcohol contains additives, i think. i think the key is to be very gentle so you don't damage the spring underneath the lens. of course, you can't use anything that would leave a residue (rubbing alcohol, moonshine, etc) or would dissolve the lens. i cleaned the lens on this unit; it was dull and now it is shiny. didn't help--i think the laser is just worn out. a used laser power meter can often be found on ebay for about 50 dollars.

What a fancy unit for sure! I was all into it until I saw your Leader Laser meter, then I was like....I want one! :) What's the model number? ~Jack, VEG

Leader LPM-8000. Can sometimes be found for about 50 dollars. Can be sold for the same amount too if you don't like it. Hey, it's a Leader! Thanks for watching!

How to get test mode on this unit?

So you seem like you know a lot more about these than I do, hopefully you have the knowledge to help me out.
I'm trying to fix this exact model for my elderly neighbor on a fixed income. I told him I'd try and get it working for free even if I have to buy a part or two.
When I plug it in, it clicks one time and the power light flashes then nothing. It seems like something is causing it to trip some sort of safety switch. I disassembled to see if there was something obvious I could find but nothing. Any suggestions?

I would check to verify the model your neighbor owns is appropriate for your local power, and also check the internal fuses. Originally I thought mine had a fuse issue but then saw the discrete power label in the back that states it needed 220V and then I was able to “fix it” by buying a voltage transformer to give it the correct power
