  • The Daily Mail's Craig Hope reflects from inside St James' Park following Newcastle United's 4-4 draw with Luton Town.
What did Eddie Howe say when asked why he did not substitute Dan Burn for Tino Livramento earlier in the game? And what did Craig think of the "Tino, Tino" chants from the home end?

I still think Howe is a great manager, but his insistence on starting a slow centre back as a left back, against fast wingers is Gareth Southgate level managing, and its not good enough. But, at the end of the day if he keeps insisting on doing the same thing and keeps losing, he'll only have himself to blame when he loses his job

@Elgeordio if you look at the counter attacks we're conceding from, it's plain and clear a lack of mobility and pace is what gets us in dangerous positions, I think the 2nd one we conceded, longstaff was weak in his challenge and lost out to barkley who started their move. From that point on, our other 2 midfielders were nowhere in sight. They weren't quick enough tracking back. I'm not going to slag burn off for not being quick, his built generally offers strengths in other areas, but the man in front of him, I think almiron today, struggled to help him. I think we're missing Joelinton immensely. With joelinton in our midfield today, I think we win comfortably. He'd had taken a yellow, or tracked back at least 2 of the goals we let in.

Spot on analysis again Craig. Despite Eddie's exceptional work over the last 2 years are we seeing his achilies heel as a coach in his reluctance , or the worse senario of his inability, to react to an obvious shortcoming in team selection or ingame management. Top opposition coaches identify areas to exploit and our left hand side is an open invitation yet we continue to be caught out time and time again.

He keeps him in to counter the aerial threat, for the most part its effective but he is exposed by pacy wingers. Put Tino on instead and we reduce that threat but become more vulnerable in the air. The back 3 of Schar Botman Burn allows Trips to get forward more which helps us at the other end. So it is a balance, and now the weakness in the system is being exposed hopefully he will find a way to address it.

Dan Burn had made two mistakes in a row costing us two goals. I was at the game today he was getting skinned the whole of the first half Tino should have been on at half time. That isn't hindsight it was obvious at the time.
There was frustration in the crowd because there were capable subs on the bench for the first time in ages but they weren't getting made, hence the shouts of Tino from the crowd.
As it happens Wilson, Tino and Barnes were very good when they came on.

  • @AizuddinDanian

Dan Burn didn't make a mistake today. The mistake was Eddie's by leaving him to deal with the FASTEST (officially) player in the league. Ogbene is no joke, speedwise. And Burn is probably the slowest LB in the league. Eddie took a gamble, he was worried about Luton's height advantage for set pieces. Ultimately, it was open play speed that cost us the points. Eddie needed to realize that earlier, rather than later. We became much better once Tino came on as he was better able to handle the pace.

  • @user-ch4wl3oe1q
    @user-ch4wl3oe1q Před 3 měsíci +4

The key word is definitely 'control' - something you have rightly been talking about for a long while now.
Top teams control games and decide the pace at which the game will be played. You won't become a Top team if your game plan is essentially reactive - which is what NUFC`s is.
Maybe Tonali is that player? There were glimpses of him getting his foot on the ball and changing the tempo (slowing and speeding up as required). But that's for another time.
What is clear though - and as much as we want Howe to succeed - is the stubborn persistence of sticking to this version of 4-3-3 (with no DM and daft inverted wingers) will get him the sack.
And we don't want that. We want him to learn and kick on.

He isn’t quick enough down that flank and when you’re matched with officially the fastest player in the league, you need to look at other options. I agree about the crowd but I think that was also down to being overrun at times down the left and the manager doing nothing about it until it's too late. How Miley got through 90 minutes I'm not sure, leaving Burn on for so long was also suicide, Ogbene had the beating of him from the first minute. It's unfair on him to be up against these type of pacey players and expect much else. It says everything about how Eddie regards Hall as well, the fact he couldn't get on when the left was in chaos. I would also like to praise Luton though what a job Edwards is doing with a team of basically unknown players other than Barkley who was head and shoulders the best player on the park and probably showed the type we are lacking at the moment. For whatever reason that trio of Bruno longstaff and Miley just doesn't seem to work at all. We did well to come back and exciting game but it's a far cry from the solidity as a team we've had since Howe took over and I fear his inability to rotate or make subs will be his downfall down the line.

The chants for Livramento weren’t a good look, but they’re a consequence of terrible management from Howe. The crowd aren’t stupid, we all saw him getting targeted throughout the first half and saw it needed to change, so why didn’t Howe. To keep Burn on at HT is criminal and therefore the penalty was completely on him for allowing Burn to continue to be found out.
Fair play to the team for coming back from two goals down, but we were very poor overall. Luton should be livid that they didn’t win that.
As an aside, the atmosphere today was shocking. There’s nothing worse than an SJP crowd that comes expecting to roll a team over, the atmosphere is usually atrocious when things turn out to not be as easy as the crowd expects. Howe did nothing then going into the season with the same strategy and tactics which led to a poor start to the campaign notably being downed by an 18 year old scoring a hattrick against us.
Pardon the pun but how can you get behind a manager who doesn't learn anything and is doomed to repeat the same mistakes?
Burn at Fullback was meant to be a temporary measure but a year later here we are still playing him with 70 million pounds of our budget sitting on the bench!
Why wasn't that money spent on a striker and holding midfielder because we could have done with them rather than pay two defenders who never get a chance to play.
The above then lead into another problem every man and his dog knew about in the striking situation with both the main options injury prone, again known about for some time but not acted upon leading to more self inflicted problems.
Seeing Anthony Gordon leaving on crutches is another inevitable conclusion the way that lad has been run into the ground by Howe this season, I am only surprised it hasn't happened before now.
Howe's 100 mph backs against the wall struggling manager style of football is killing us due to the physical demands of it!
It was a needs must in the early days of the take over with the threat of relegation looming but surely we are past that now?
Howe doesn't seem to have anything more in the locker when that chasing people all over the pitch fails on a given day.
It seems the only thing Howe learned from Simeone was the dark arts which form part of his keys to victory, the only problem with that is it has done for us on numerous occasions.
Howe has his teams pulling players down, standing in the way of them, diving in front of the referee looking for free kicks, time wasting which has seen countless games thrown away due to the added time giving the opposition the chance to get back into the game.
Howe hasn't moved on with the same small time mentality employed by struggling managers still prevalent within him.
Howe is a good coach getting the players fit and conditioned but are they too over trained and that is why the injuries are biting so much with all those soft tissue concerns?
The players are burned out but Howe just carries on regardless to the detriment to his squad.
Howe has demonstrated his lack of ability this season and PIF would be remiss in letting him continue with the reins next season.
I think we all need to see the truth staring us in the face instead of trying to hang onto the shirt tails of the feel good factor created by the take over which has hyped Howe way beyond his true abilities in favour of the practicalities.

Craig , When will Eddy learn from the first 30 minutes you could see a Dajavu of itself of the Forest game , Dan Burn is the weakest link and teams that play us now know that , so its not rocket science , Eddie re acted to late again , if he had made the change of Burn at half time , it might have been a different story but NO he waited till the damage was done , If he plays Dan Burn v Forest you can see what the out come but
I bet you he plays Dan Burn again from the start against Forest and Eddie will be shooting himself in the foot again ,
Dan Burn is not a Left back , he has been a good Servent and a good central defender , but when will Eddie learn ,
The positive of the game was Barnes and Wison were back but loosing Gordon is a massive blow
We were lucky to claw back a point ,it could have been so different if changes had of been made earlier Period!

Dan Burn should not have started, it was unfair of Eddie to play him in this game because he was never going to be fast enough. There are games Dan will be brilliant in and games he won’t because of his lack of pace. That’s not being hypercritical, it’s just a fact. I thought the crowd had seen that Tino was preparing to come on and so started the chant. Maybe that wasn’t the case in hindsight but I could definitely sense that Dan was frustrated with himself and the situation but Eddie needed to have managed that far sooner than he did. That said, you yourself Craig have been very critical of individual players this season and therefore it’s somewhat hypercritical to say you don’t like the supporters doing the same. All things considered there were many positives to to taken from the performance and I really enjoyed it.

I do not want Eddie gone at all. The injuries have been a problem. I also think that the manager gets the brunt of frustration with the silent window. And it’s not his fault. I remember the villa home game and daft people saying “burn not good enough, we need another striker, another midfielder” etc and that was before the Barnes injury and many injuries and the ban! My summary and I’ve bounced around too- today. It good enough, expectations higher, today not good enough, a forest win and a cup run needed and still faith in Eddie as long as he’s supported by the club

I'm such a Howe fan and don't want to dog him out as I've been resolute in believing he's such a detailed manager and focused on marginal.improvwment that I really believed he would learn from mistakes and adapt his style to be more pro-active sooner. But he needs to start doing this quickly now. To cite the consideration of Lutons arial threat would be some form of defense but Lutons first saw them win 2 heads in our box almost unchallenged. Like you say Burn needed help and didn't get it until it was way too late. A disappointing day onfield and off ultimately.

Goals were awful and the 4th has happened like that numerous times this season, it’s like we don’t see the extra man wide or have the brains to cover that side (again where is burn ?, left upfield an no pace to get back). 1st nobody picking up scorer so free header, 2nd we lose in middle and keeper pushes it out to Barclay (could have done better). 3rd burn outpaced and pulled back, botman was coming over to cover. Awful decision to do that.
Agree we scored a 4th and had 27 mins left and did nothing. They should have scored at the end also.
Happy we can come back, but it’s a game we should have had 3 or 4 in the first half and out of sight. 2 points dropped.

we played into lutons hand they were so open we thought possibly this was gonna be easy to break on them and when we went 2-1 up they were still pressing high and we went lax and the game opened up totally, we need to fix the midfield balance as we cant add new players now its got no defensive solidity in midfield. love miley but he never gets back goal side after the opposition breaks which leaves us open too often. we need willock back ASAP too add some legs in there but looks like it could be a tough end to season. look at all the comments slating howe forgetting 6 months ago he was the best thing since sliced bread he will turn things around every team goes through bad form we cant just go up up up there always has to be a plateau before we go again. just wait until the summer when we can buy and re start to rebuild.

A common theme re centre mid defensive. Need a proper chopper blocker in there to protect covering goalie. If we had that we would tighten up at back and alleviate pressure on the (now normal) solo striker to score more than once

Eddie will get himself the sack. Is he single handedly trying to get himself booted out the door? Even someone who doesn't watch football would know that Burn should have come off after 20-30 mins, so what will his Boss' be thinking?
Amanda: "Eddie just a quick question, I was at the game, and I saw Dan really struggling, and you had a £40m player who is young, quick and attack minded and also a great defender on the bench? Why would you wait until 69m to bring him on or even start him....Just saying is'all". "something to think about sweetie.....you wanted players in maybe use them.....🤷‍♀"
Burn himself would be thinking "whens the gaffa taking me off....Bloody hell... take me off gaffa"

Eddie has got his favourites will bite him in the ass when he gets his P45 though … can’t be waiting until 4 goals go in before changing it .. everybody with a tiny bit common sense could see burn was getting left for dead after 10-15 mins

People asking questions of Howe… we’ve come so far in 2 yrs. if Howe goes we are back to square one. Be patient getting better is never straightforward.

Agreed, our issues are mainly in midfield. Id like to see them try 4 in midfield sometimes. As for Burn I think he is being targeted by opposing teams and probably shouldn't be an automatic starter but yes, the reaction of the crowd was a bit disrespectful.

Come on, Craig, you have to ask these awkward questions to Eddie about Dan burns speed he's not good enough as a left back, livermento or hall should play there.

Craig, do you think the midfield control could have been better had Sandro Toonali been playing out there ? Is he what we are missing? Along with Joe Willockinho?

Replace Burn and Almiron with Livramento and Barnes at half time we win that game. That's on poor decisions from management.

Craig no disrespect but you dont understand tactics. The issue is not the midfielders its both full backs, more so Burn but also Trips at times recently. Both getting caught too far up the pitch. Trips gets away with it more as he has positional intelligence but Burn is terrible. The system we play relies on full backs getting foward and supporting the midfielders so they can be compact. If one full back isnt there then one CM has to cover the flank in his absence creating a hole in midfield.
Its about pace and energy. Trips is slowing down but his positioning is usually on point...Burn gets caught out every time he ventures forward.
The full backs job is to push forward creating a flat 5 across the middle in transition...Tino plays the role perfectly, he drifts in to midfield allowing CM to support the CF

Yeah I think they need to come up with a new system in the summer, other teams have done their homework on us now and there haven't been many options to rotate lately. It would be risky to make major changes at this point though.

I know we are missing Tonali and Joelington in the midfield but conceding 4 at home to Luton is bad, I am worried about Eddie's tactics tbh. I think we might see a new manager with a cash injection at sjp come the summer
