This is true for all skydivers, its a tradition before a tuck turn exit. Notice how long he stayed with his back to the ground. You have to splay your arms and legs to roll over and then drop more to align before you pull. They were in a hot air balloon at roughly 8k feet and he fell at least 3k feet before the turn over. That's dangerous because your barometer forces your shoot to pull at 3500 feet if you're somehow unable to pull or knocked unconscious. Low jumps with long falls are dangerous because you usually jump from a plane above 10k feet so timing IS everything.

I had a very similar experience to what you're describing the first time I went skydiving. We fell and turned toward the plane for the first two seconds maybe, and I got to watch the plane flying away while I fell away from it. It was fucking surreal; very dream-like and something I'll never forget.
