@@PhilBoswell Lol might want to do some actual research on the side effects it can have. I live in the U.S where activated charcoal is banned as a food additive or coloring agent. If you're taking medication it's a HUGE risk for your health. I'm not saying never use activated charcoal, it's not the worst thing someone can ingest especially when you're aware of what it does when put into your body. It would be nice though if huge channels like this mentioned somewhere the potential risk of ingesting activated charcoal.
So...Jamie’s has bacon, Barry’s is wrapped in gold, and Mike’s is simple but lovely. Yup, seems about par for the course.

I feel like the next pass it on curveball or (or a new challenge) should be "what would they do" where the gang have to try and do what they think someone else would do (like if its a new challenge maybe mike would have to make a dish he thinks barry would like to make) and they can all judge each others dishes at the end.

Barry crouching down and yelling "No! I'm hiding!" is honestly one of the most relatable things that's ever been done on this channel.
I've noticed that the guys have incorporated some of the gadgets they've previously reviewed into the kitchen. I think it'd be cool to hear updated reviews of the gadgets now that they've used some of them for a while.
Seconded. I would like to see episodes on gadgets that they've reviewed before and have become a part of things they normally use on the show and/or at home. Good idea! :-)

Didn't one of the lads get Ben a whisk-cleaning gadget that he subsequently treated with contempt? When Barry was pondering how to clean his whisk, all I could think was he could have used that gadget. :)
I love it, Mike gets all the praise throughout the battle and he takes 3rd and Jamie gets odd looks throughout the whole thing and the "I'm concerned it is going to be savory" and then he takes the win. And I think Baz was waiting for somebody to say, pretentious or not you decide. Great episode!
I mean I think Mike would have taken first if not for playing it so safe with his flavors! Where as Jamie took first because he did well, took more of a risk, and it turned out well.

Barry's looks the best, Jamie's is the most interesting, and Mike's would probably be my favourite taste wise.

I loved Sally & Jemma's energy! Compared to some harsher judging and critiques, it's nice to have some chefs in who seem so joyful! :D

They kept being worried about Jay's being too savory. In a food niche where the goal is a near-inedible mountain of frosting smothered in sprinkles seated on enough sponge to mostly hold it up, his would be the one I make a beeline for. I work kids' parties and have been around some monstrous, nauseating cupcakes, so I may be biased. 🤣
Hell yes on that. You can only have so many varieties of the traditional sweet cupcakes before you want something new.

So true! I've realized I absolutely hate the sickeningly sweet desserts bakeries and cafes put out. I like my desserts balanced in terms of flavor now.
Lol, I once ordered a pair of cupcakes which had as much frosting as cake. I was expecting some sort of frosting that was like the somewhat airy stuff at the store; instead it was like eating straight-up butter mixed with sugar to the consistency of a very thick caulk. I had to cut off half the frosting, and I'm a sugarholic!

@@SortedFood The thing is the guys pick on him for the presentation but if I have the choice, I'm picking Flavour over not presentation EVERY time and Jamie nails the flavours.
Barry - I saw a tip for piping bags, fill the bag without a nozzle, then take a second bag, fit a nozzle, cut the tip of the first bag and pop it inside. It means you can use one bag of filling/icing, and change nozzles halfway through if you need to! Plus if you forget to put a nozzle in your bag you can pretend you planned it all along...
Such a easy and clever fix if (or when in the case of the normals) when the nozzle is forgotten.
These cupcakes were almost a meme of the normals. Jamie's bacon, Mike's cereal and Barry's charcoal
I have never understood the charcoal thing, it adds no flavor and it is nutritionally (and if you take medications) bad for you to ingest as it absorbs things when eaten... Which is why we use it for when people eat poisons or OD on medications.
If you just want the black color... Squid ink if you want the organic black.

Also normal everyday non activated charcoal doesn't have that much (still large, but significantly less) surface area, and if you are eating fancy pants dishes you probably aren't malnourished.
As for medication, yeah, eating charcoal can mess with your dosage. However it's hardly unique as all sorts of things needs to be avoided when on various medications. No reason for the rest of us who don't have those restrictions to pretend we do.

@@junior29557 Depends on what type of vegetarian you are, fish in most is considered fine and since squid ink is technically a fish product I think it would be fine.... For vegans yeah no since it's an animal product (then again all these cup cakes would be a no-go at that point)
I'm a simple man, I see the use of charcoal in food and I remind them to be VERY CAREFUL because activated charcoal does not discriminate on what it absorbs and WILL affect your medications!!!
Yes! This is my first thought anytime I see people use charcoal in cooking-it really shouldn’t be in food!!

No matter how many times I watch these guys I'm always surprised by Barry's food presentation, genuinely makes me want to try it even if it's not the best
That's how I feel about Jamie. You always know it looks questionable as hell, but you also know that the flavor is going to blow your mind one way or another. With Barry, I always get a pretentious-over-substance feeling, so his creations actually scare me away no matter how nice they might look.

I'm honestly so happy that Jamie won. Let's take a second to consider Jamie's progress over this year alone. He's been more consistent, organized, and prepared than he was in the past, by a long country mile. Yes, he still needs to work on his creativity side to cooking (why he doesn't do so well in Pass-It-On's) and his plating is still, well, Spaff'ed. But still, he's been improving so much.
Barry and Mike being upset that Jamie beat them is funny to me because Barry has been more uppity than usual, but still hasn't really shown any dedication or improvements, and Mike just needs to scale it back a bit. Also, Jamie being so confident in his cupcake NOT being too savory and being right is amazing. Love it. Also, there really is no question as to why Jamie has been leading with the Chef's Badges. He may not have the creativity, but the way he keeps improving, he might be actually the first normal capable of working in a real restaurant kitchen. He might be slow at first, but the way he's going, his comment from the Celebration Pass-It-On about wanting James to actually think he'd have Jamie work with him comes to mind. Lol

You don't need to praise someone by insulting another member's personality. I've noticed Barry seems to be the punching bag of the community, they genuinely hate seeing him do well and love it when he messes up. It's bordering on vindictive and it's putting me off the Sorted community that used to be so positive in the past. Do better guys.
It's funny you say that. I feel they do that to Jamie during every competition.

They all looked great, but I'm a little surprised there wasn't a "consistency" badge up for grabs... Making multiple identical items is a definitely a chefy challenge. Maybe next time there is a small item battle, a large(ish) number of consistent items?

I'm always kind of blown away with Jamie - I think he has a really strong handling of flavors and spices. Too bad his presentation and execution can be a hot mess (though, again, remarkably nice this time!)

Baz has the best looking, Mike has (I suspect) the best tasting, but Jamie has the one I actually want to try the most.

I feel so old. I used to watch Jemma's videos ~10 years ago and this feels like a massive throwback! She is such a likeable person with a lovely sense of humor apart from creating some incredible desserts!
What I’m expecting from the Normals making Cupcakes:
Jamie - SCB aka Steak, Chorizo and Bacon (not Hot Ham)
Barry - MT aka Manuka and Truffle
Mike - GG/EM aka A ‘generous glug’ of Espresso Martini.

Jamie has always been the most underrated "normal", but you know what? Sometimes the simplicity of adding bacon is all you need, he understands and respects this principle. Marvelous!

I am amazed at Ben's restraint with the amount of innuendo opportunities here.
Jamie always smashes it with weird flavour and texture combos that somehow work!
I absolutely think the judges made the right decision - not because it was the most exciting, but because it seemed to be the most well-executed one by far. I do think both the other ideas would probably be just as good, though, or even better, with a bit more work put into both the concept and the execution.
I think Jamie done an amazing job. On top of that, Mike and Barry's reaction every time he wins makes it that much better imo!
Jamie has a surprisingly good record at shoehorning bacon into things they shouldn't be in and somehow making it work.
Jamie is my spirit animal in the kitchen, when I cook, I hope to bring the same dynamics and taste. :) congrats~!
By the thumbnail alone Jamie's is the version you'd make at home for the family, Baz's the fancy pants one, and Mike's is the version where you tried to impress someone you like.

Barry's cupcakes were beautiful though and intriguing (and I'm not even a fan of using charcoal usually). Even if the wrapper was hard to get into, I thought the gold was pretty against the black. His piping was great.

Really loved these judges and the challenge. Not terribly interested in making cupcakes myself, but as an enjoyable watch with some fun cooking ideas to ponder, this was exceptional! Mike, Barry, & Jamie outdid themselves as well!

Jamie's absolutely incredible 🤣 People tend to underestimate his cooking skill because he's not as good at presentation and can tend to panic but he's always been the one that's constantly improving and you can really see how each year he gets better at certain techniques!
This one was so fun! I've got to say that the best moment were the girls jogging around to Jamie and him immediately tensing.
I just want to go on record saying that I think Jamie may actually be the best cook of the three, but plays it off for the show.
Cupcake Jemma "oohing" and "aaahing" over the "masala jelly" is the most English thing I've ever seen.

I think while they got a good choice in winners and places.
There is definately a difference between the distinguishing tastes of a chef..and what the oridinary public might want.
I'm going to say in the end that the safe option from Mike will be the winner in sales. Unless one of the other options wows someone so much that a customer pushes it hard as so amazing.

This was actually an edge of your seat video...the girks were fabulous, pulling no punches and it was a fantastic element. I actually cheered for Jamie's win at the end!!! Surprised Mike came third with how amazing his cupcake sounded like it tasted but can also understand tha maybe he wasn't quite pushing the boundaries as hard and the creativity was celebrated highly. Overall, three outstanding entries...will be amazing to see how they go in the shop!
