NASCAR -The Sound of Restrictor Plates

- The sounds of restrictor plates have changed a lot over the past 20+ years or so and since I was bored I decided to make this compilation of the whole change of the sound.

The sound is from the exhaust. If you watch the 1995 Daytona 500 Sterling Marlin had the only car with that high pitched exhaust and dominated the race. Its basically a crossover that gives the exhaust a similar sound of 180° headers. After he won that race with that high pitched exhaust, everybody started using them. It has nothing to do with the restrictor plates.
That good ol Dr. Gas x pipe w/ boom tubes and maybe even using that oval tubing but the first two for sure did it
I miss the pre-2008 sounds!
tony20sbestfan Me too.
same here dude!
Sounds like a swarm of angry bees. Today it just doesn't sound the same
From 87 to 97, best
@@mattjohnston7686 correction, 1970s to 1996. They did the gen 4 upgrade in 1996.
I love all of these sounds. NASCARs have never sounded bad with any generation in my opinion.
Better than F1 these days. Way to quiet.
F1 is just too high pitched in my opinion
@@jade2003YT I think they use different engines than NASCAR. F1 uses V12s, while NASCAR uses V8s.
am i the only one who likes nascar regardless of the sound?
Your not alone but I still think that 2000-07 sounded the best
Probably
There’s something I like of all of the generations
The raspiness of gen 4 and before
The howling of gen 5
The high rpm scream of gen 6
Edit: From what I’ve seen, it seems like Gen 7 might combine those things
Probably me as well.
@@Creeperboy099 gen 7 has more of the earth shaking rumble of a corvette c7.r mixed with that typical nascar buzz you get on onboard cameras.
That sound when they go into 3.....my god
+HMoreno55 gives me goose bumps
IKR. It's the most beautiful sound in auto racing.
Chills...
It sounds so intimidating.
I miss the 90s and early 2000s sounds. I grew up to that sound.
I remember my first Talladega. I flew over from California with my dad because we were tired of terrible Fontana races. Well worth it
That crescendo at 5:15 in the 2007 package made the hairs on my arms stand up!
I know this about sound, but I miss some of the old camera angles
The cars from the first clip sound mean as hell. No high-pitched whine, just a thundering roar.
Don't get me wrong it's still fast and action packed but without that sound it will never be the same. 2014 gen 6 was fast paced but the sound is gone
The problem with the COT and Gen-6 car is that the cars sound different not because they changed engines (they're still the same), but because NASCAR mandated that the exhaust pipes all be on the right side of the car. Not only does this make the cars sound different, but, in my opinion, it's pretty hazardous having fumes be blown towards the crowds. The Gen-4 car sounded so good because the exhaust pipes were on the LEFT side of the cars, safely dispersing fumes into the infield and giving us the high-pitched whine we all loved. NASCAR needs to change the rules and mandate having the pipes on the left side again, so we can get that high-pitched whine back instead of that bass-sounding hum. Keep the restrictor plates, NASCAR, but switch the side on which the exhaust port is.
We need to start a movement next year or something. We could use #Bringbackleftexhaust or #NASCARoldschoolsound
Actually the Gen-4 had "X" exhaust pipes. Meaning if you flip the car over, the header pipes would form an "X" under the car. NASCAR moved the header pipes over too the right too take away from the drivers.
i think they brought the pipes to the right so they can stop the gas fumes from getting in the car...
INfs123 That too. But i remember that NASCAR said they did that specificly too take heat away from the drivers. But the fumes problem playied a part i think as well. I do remember drivers being overcome by fumes from time too time.
BNSF1995 they did it because the exhaust would catch gas fumes on fire while being refilled
2001 is when they sounded the best I think!
This video for me, ended at 6:38.
Same
4:20 best imo
mike james blaze it.
KRT049 Same! The sounds of the older cars sounds waay beter than the newer cars!
Around the 3:00 mark, I can hear a hint of the old style exhaust sounds from the cars of the early to mid 90s. Just a little bit higher RPMs. I love it. I miss the whine sound of the early to mid 2000 range.
Good hearing man.
fun fact they were probably running the same ram it was the exhaust that made it high pitch
The Hendrick cars had the older sound.
Gotta go back to 2003. That was when it was awesome.
Yeah you got that right bud.
nascarfan20105 I like the 2012 daytona cars
Got to go back before 1988, that when it really was awesome and was real racing.
2000
Does anyone agree with me that all of the cars before 6:38 sound the best? Or is it just me.
Zachary DeCiancio Haha we all agree with ya.......
yes
I like the howl of the Gen IV cars, but the Gen VI cars sound really good too.
NASCAR Crashes
2018
2000-07 was the best sound
Everyone complaining about the sound at 6:38 ... the clip at that moment switched to Xfinity cars, with smaller engines. When it switched back to Cup cars, the noise was much better
i remember in like 2005 i think when Hendrick motorsports were the only team to route the exhaust over to the right, hence when they had the lower pitched engine sounds compared to the rest of the fields high pitched but were DOMINANT on restrictor plates during that time. Now its Toyota power dominating on restrictor plates
1980s ........1990s ........early 2000s were the best sounds!
I agree 100%
The 80s were my personal fave! Just a roaring engine at full speed passing by! Breathtaking.
1:17 is the best
Left ear: NASCAR
Right ear: The Matrix
As you know, NASCAR has used the same engine specs for the past few decades (which will end next season). The sound doesn't come from any engine changes or even changes of the car generation. The sound comes from advancements/changes made to the exhaust system. Engines, themselves, are relatively quiet. A lot of people will change the exhaust on a regular sedan to make it sound powerful without actually changing any of the major performance parts. Even motorized bicycles are often louder than most cars while going slower than the speed limit.
I do love the more vintage sound of stock cars, and those sounds came from a large single-tube exhaust pipe. I'm sure there is a logical reason why NASCAR decided to switch to the more narrow Y-shape exhaust system. But one thing I did notice, the Car of Tomorrow got quieter and quieter. Then once the Gen-6 cars came around last year, they were extremely loud. That change in sound comes from the exhaust pipes being more spaced out while having a bit more of a circular shape, and the center plates for each pipe tip is now gone. You'd be surprised how much of a difference such a minor change could make.
And at 6:38 is when NASCAR ruined restrictor plate racing
What it sounds like to me: 0:00-6:38 = Speed. 6:38-End = Muscle. For different reasons, I love them both!
1:18 is the best sound out of all things racing...
The Goodwrench car at 2:45 is weed for my ears.
Yeah it was driven by Kevin Harvick
The biggest issue I had w/ the Gen-5 car is that it took away manufacture identity all together. I liked the tandem-draft racing, though.
nascarfanatic2425 yeah, it was the best in 2011 in my opinion
sorry, but two car tandem draft was boring, and the C.O.T. was a failure
@@Steventhe2nd In looks yes it failed, being Competitive IT WAS A SUCCESS. The current cars switch it around: Good looks YES they do, but other than the 2014 package they actually SUCK and worsen single file racing EVERYWHERE
Man that widespread angle going into 3 and 4 and Daytona FOX needs to bring that back. The acoustics sound great
These cars did used to sound great but you can’t seriously act like nascar doesn’t still sound so damn good. And with the new car coming next year id imagine itll be even better
Never said they didn't but ok, the X-pipe configuration on the GEN4s was the best sound for its time.
I prefer 2005 over 2007 because they just had that certain sound to em that couldnt be replaced in my head.
Love that sound from 1999 to 2007! Anyone else?
Dark Fox I do too...
Me definitely me!
god love this sound
0:16 for V8 Thunder
NASCAR really lost its luster after 2003. Then it turned to being all about big money then good racing.
The Winston Cup era was when NASCAR was at it's best.
After 2006 money started drying up.
1:55 pure magic
Sounds like a bunch of bee's
Mid 80s at Talladega nothing tops them going by at 216-217.
I love the pre-2008 sounds. NASCAR changed some sort of gearing rule (don't know what specifically) in the fall 2007 Talladega race which allowed the teams to run higher RPM's. That's the difference, the cars back then only were running around 6500-7500rpms versus today where they run around 8000--9000rpm.
6:41
the day restrictor plate racing wasn't the same again
if only every race there was an option every race to completely shut off the announcers, can't stand listening to them and their bias BS, just wanna watch the race and hear the engines.
In my opinion, the Gen-5 car was the best plate racing car, while the gen-6 car is superior on terms of every other track.
The 4th gen has the best looks
@@PSNxFTWxRAGOI personally, I prefer a more stock look
God I hope we can one day hear this sound again.
Goose bumps Goosebumps every were
Those high pitched sounds are music to my eyes.the closest thing we have to the old sound is when the trucks go to Daytona and talladega
Is it bad that I really love the sound at 7:32 better than the gen 4 onboard sound?
Yeah the onboard cam is from Carl Edwards
Roush Fenway ford fusion engines sounds badass
no its just weird
I like how older nascars sound I like hi pitched
haha glad to hear that,it was sad to see that 2007 would be last year of hearing this beloved sound.
BRING THIS BACK NOW
I so love this. Thank you very much. Great job.
2007 though
Thank you for making this video!!🤘🏼😎💯♥️🔥🏁
Gave up on Nascar around 2010. I would start following again if the cars sounded like this.
I miss hearing 750 HP every weekend along with the Xpipe setup for plate tracks. What nascar has become in the past 14 years is a complete joke.
Apparently, this sound disappeared because gear limits were instituted at the plate tracks just because Toyota kept grenading engines.
My left ear definitely enjoyed this, not so much my right ear.
The plate package with the wicker bills from fall 2000 and all of 2001 were the best in my opinion. It allowed for more passing and excitement the fans and drivers both loved. Its a damn shame they scrapped it in 2002 another overreaction by Nascar. That package had nothing to do with Dales death and he loved that package he got his last win in that. Before that package he was pissed after 2000 Daytona 500 saying that was the sorriest racing package and he was right so in the fall of 2000 and 2001 Nascar actually got it right and they screwed up as usual by scrapping it in 2002
Back when you could tell who ever had a Hendrick engine, Roush Yates, DEI, RCR, JGR engine
1:16 😍🥰
eargasmmmmmmmmm
God I miss the nationwide series cars
They still had the pre 2008 sound when I was born
those were on non restrictor plate tracks...
That’s the best part about restrictor plates
It was the exhaust design not the restrictor plates that gave them the sound
@@CP0rings33 yep, the X-Pipes
I love 2005 , 2006 , 2007 and 2010
Restrictor plates ROCK!!!!!!👍👍👍
Apparently NASCAR fans are babies and like to hate the Gen 6 when those things sound very nice.
Jay Smoothe The GEN6 and 5 sound completely the same bruh, over the years with the old exhaust system the sound of the cars would change almost every 2 to 3 years and they all sounded great because of there high pitched whine that they give off. I wouldn't say that we're babies, I would say that we're just nostalgic.....................
nascarfan20105 Problem is that the cars still sound good. People just like to whine.
Ehhhh, not really but everyone is entitled to there own opinion......
Ummm ok...... either way I like what I like.
+Jay Smoothe
I think everyone loves the sound of a finely tuned engine at that "perfect RPM" that tickles the ear, if you know what they mean. But if this is what restrictor plate engine sound like at speed, what do they sound like UNrestricted? Would have been nice to have the side-by-side comparison.
Not tryijg to be obtuse, but I’m not sure what difference I’m supposed to be hearing. Could someone explain it to me? Very new to Nascar and I’d like to understand!
Just listen and you'll figure it out
nascarfan20105 the only thing I really hear is maybe a deeper engine note on the newer cars? Its also so hard to tell when its the sound of all 30 of them rushing by one camera.
God I missed the 2000s cars.
First one is the BEST
Exhaust and EFI is the difference
Crank it up,
Sensacional!!!! Parece que eles estao voando!!!!!!
98-02 you will be missed
an oster blender in front o a microphone LOL
*_I don't know what you guys are talking about. When I watch nascar, they still sound the same as the 2000s cars._*
Restrictor plates have changed in pitch and tone over the last 20 years, I don't know how you can't tell that sounds have changed. The cars went from dual exhaust pipes which created a high pitched whine, to single exhaust out of the right side of the car which created a lower toned pitched.
gen 4 cars sound the best
I miss the duel exhausts
I like the original best
I would throw in a video of the cars from 1997
Lot of "The Swarm" from the early to mid 2000s, but awesome video nonetheless.
Everyone’s talking about sounds being different... I am not sure I understand that comment. Sounds like a race to me. Lol
The Gen 5 cars to present really do sound like junk compared to the Gen 4 sounds they ran pre-2008
Sorry but i'm French and in France, lot of People doesn't what it's NASCAR. But what is the restrictor plate ?
A restrictor plate is a plate placed inside the car over the corroborator to reduce horsepower of the engine therefore reducing the speed by some estimates of 30-60 mph.
4:48
There's a difference?
Yeah, in pitch there's a difference.
CRANK IT UP
The Big One didn't become a thing until the Plate became a thing. To solve the rare issue of one car bouncing off the catch fence (Bobby Allison 87 Talladega 500), they created a situation where multiple cars hitting the fence is commonplace.
No helped it those cars use to be able to go over 200 mph so they could be faster remember Austin Dillon's crash in 2015 if they did not do that than it would have been much worst or any crash could have ended in ppl hitting the catch fence with that speed
ARCA cars have the same sound but it's not the same. What a shame.
Yeah that is true.
Like
the COT killed nascar
No, the COT has saved countless NASCAR drivers from injuries and death.
Miles3363 No. The HANS device, full containment seats, door plates, and S.A.F.E.R. barriers have saved countless drivers from injuries and death. The COT and Gen 6(Which is the COT with a different body) ruined the racing.
Of course those things have played a difference, a massive difference. I was generally speaking when I mentioned the COT. Go tell Micheal McDowell that the COT isn't a life saver. The COT hasn't ruined racing, NASCAR's rules package regarding the cars have hurt the on track aspect of racing.
There comes a point where safety out rules the entertainment value of a sport, racing wasn't invented safe, it evolved to it. If I had a choice of which car to drive on a weekly basis, I'd pick the Gen 4 every time. Better looking, better racing, still far safer than any other racecar on the planet today.
KRT049
Don't get me wrong, I sorely miss the great racing the previous generation of cars produced. The gen 4 car produced great racing on a weekly basis. Now we have to get lucky, hoping certain things happen during the race, to produce excitement. I guess I'm just hoping it's not the CoT that produces bad racing, but the rules package. I guess we'll see with the new rules package next year, which is supposed to produce more side by side racing. But NASCAR has said that before
