During this Covid crisis BCB has pivoted and has been using the fire dragon tech and started manufacturing Hand Sanitizer for local hospitals and others in need of vital PPE!
we actually get those dragon stoves issued in the British Army now, there great. like you said you can clean your hands and even small cuts and grazes too. They work well in a Trangia stove or even just half a tablet in a metal bottle cap, like off a bottle of scotch or wine, while resting you pot on three tent pegs upright in the ground. or a make shift small bowl made from tin foil. One fire dragon cube does me enough hot water for a brew and a dehydrated meal in about six minutes. It’s designed to be used with the British Army mess tins. 👍 🧐🇬🇧
Good test. The Firedragon gel is also not as 'nasty' as hexamine interms of toxicity. It is pretty expensive though as W ALKEONE points out and has different properties. Hexi still has a place as it is relatively cheap and more robust out of the packet. Dragon gel will dry up over time if not in an airtight container. However you can literally run the Dragon gel under a tap for a minute and still light it no problems. Also it can be lit much easier with a ferro rod and for these reasons, I often carry a couple for emergency fire lighters. All the best from the UK!
For people that don’t like the tabs Dragon 🐉 offers BCB ADVENTURE Fire Dragon Gel Fuel in 8oz bottle. I like the Dragon stove, received one in PMP Prep Box 📦 Camp Cooking theme last year. I use the stinky Esbit cube only because I have a lot of them but I only use one cube and add twigs and sticks to build up my fire 🔥. Works well for coffee or soup 🍜.
A clear and fair result using OEM gear, but personally I prefer (a relative term) the hexamine because it does not liquify and can therefore be used in more efficient stoves where it will give you a boil. Because the fire dragon liquifies you cannot use in stoves that do not have a cup to catch the liquid. I wrote to BCB and suggested they package it is foil cups thereby making each block its own burner but I got no response.
Great review, We got a few of those in Israeli special forces. Work great and we use them to sanitize in a pinch. I wanted to share that you can easily store 3 fuel cubes in the stove. Both good but the firedragon really is a leap forward with new technology. It takes 3 in the burner for storage, gives you a 1 tab brew up, is safe, can be used as an anti bacterial wipe, and is very efficient with the built in windshield. I've been using them for about 2 years now and I really like them. Great product.
Have not seen this item before. I find a few pluses and minuses for the cost of this stove. At over $1. per burn for the Firedragon gel that is pretty high. It is also twice the weight of the Esbit cube so to be fair it should burn either longer or hotter or both. It will boil water in outstanding time frame, however. Esbit was always meant to be an item for the soldiers to heat their coffee/tea. Never meant as an item for backpackers to boil water for Mountain House meals. I'm always amazed at how many people don't recognize this fact and try to extract something it was never meant to deliver.You could just use alcohol to fill the tub of the stove instead of the expensive fuel cubes and that would bring down the cost a lot. I always carry aluminum foil w/my Esbit stoves as a wind break....so the extra metal panel they give you is of service but the foil can do a much better job. I don't think you could place the "dragon" fuel on a rock like an Esbit cube to heat a cup of water (if you didn't have the stove)....it seems it would run down the rock like water/alcohol. I really like the idea of this stove but to me it just seems to be an expensive alcohol stove. Thank you for bringing another item I have never seen before. Knowledge is King!
If ezbit wasn't meant to be used to make meals, what was? They were issued to both Germans (during WW2) and Americans (Post WW2) for that exact use. It's unrealistic to expect a soldier to build a campfire every time they need to heat their food.

Back then they had "K" rations that weren't necessarily meant to be heated in the first place. To expect a soldier to make a camp fire to heat food is ludicrous on it's own merit. The 1940's were a whole other time of living. What is available to us today wasn't even dreamed of in 1941....Jet boils, canned gasses, alcohol stoves,Mountain House freeze dried meals, MRE's ect. We in todays world can't think of eating a cold meal. In the 30's-40's it happened all the time. You got what your govt. gave you in the field.
The price is dependent upon you location. in the UK I can buy the BCB stove for 1.67 and 0.30 GBP per tablet. So about 40 cents $ a brew. Not bad ! However, at 30g a tablet, weight of fuel over an extended trip, (like alcohol) is the issue.
I think of the Esbit stoves, I have two, as being for a quick stop & brew up tea/coffee stoves - or Ramen. Good as a backup stove or something for a spur of the moment warm up. The speed of the BCB cube boiling would be great in winter for sure. Especially if you wanted to melt a few cups of snow and turn into drinkable water.
I've had good luck with small alcohol stoves and stereo stoves. I bought several esbit stoves, but have not tried them. I liked their size and fuel storage. Thanks for testing them.
Great straightforward review. BCB firedragon stoves are used by British Military, dirt cheap and can survive a bit of abuse. They even have excellent green credentials
That is not an even test . The Esbet did not have a wind screen to focus the heat the way the dragon did. That screen helps a lot more than you think .
"Fishy Paint Thinner" is the Esbit tab smell. My BCB carries 3. One in the middle and one on each side. My only objection to the FireDragon fuel tabs is the cost. Denatured is still so much cheaper, but I figure once they get enough volume the price should come down. I remember doing the math at some point, the FD is something like $1.25 (Amazon 6 pack pricing) a burn and denatured was something like $ .18 (I buy the two gallon at the big box store whenever they have them.)
I just ordered one of these BCB setups. I've been considering the esbit but it looks like you not only get a better hotter burn but probably a cleaner burn than that esbit fuel.

Oh, also I just picked up 5 brand new BCB stoves (i've used their old ones before with the hexi tabs) and 5 packs of gel for £14 ($17) so I'm quite please about that. Just wish I could get out in the sticks.. damn this lockdown.
A good comparison .. thanks. The BCB appears to be a definite improvement over the tried and tested Esbit. That said, my ittle Esbit has seen 45+ summers and still gets used at least once weekly. A homemade Aluminium Windscreen similar to that of the BCB takes care of Flame Protection. I keep a pack of Esbit Tabs wrapped in Clingwrap inside the Stove as a backup but my GoTo is Alcohol / Gel Fuel ('Brennsprit / Sicherheitsbrennpaste') as here in Switzerland, they are much easier sourced than the Esbit Tabs and far cheaper. An alternate method: Seat Stove firmly at desired spot. Fill mug with the requisite amount of water / whatever and put on the lid .. place to one side. Place fuel into the stove. Light Cotton Waxed Taper (a piece of 'requisitioned' household cotton mop soaked in wax) with BIC. Use the burning taper to light fuel. In the case of Esbits especially, it can be held in place for extended periods .. also less chance of burnt fingers and worse, a melting upside-down BIC. Also handy for those hard-to-reach-places. Place mug onto the stove, ensuring that it's well seated and stable. Also, when making any adjustments to the cup (lid on/off .. adding Ingredients .. stirring .. etc), steady the cup (gloved hand .. pot gripper .. stick ..) or if necessary, take it off. Advantages: Less chance of the whole Doodah inadvertently falling over. Less chance of burnt fingers and/or BIC. More effective utilization of Fuel. Take care ..

Bit late on this one but I noticed the esbit stove the BCB cube was placed on had holes in. In the Fire Dragon stove it has a small dish area to stop the cube turning to liquid and spilling out. May have found some of it made its way onto the ground....
Depends on the tab cant remember the brand but there are some that are large not bigger in volume but more surface area and that helps produce more heat. I sometimes just cut them in fours and add sticks to the fire that also produces bigger flames and hotter temp
@@graemeo3440 ezbit tablets are just a very light and efficient version. That is their main appeal. But most people use them wrong, so they are more attracted to the cheaper, heavier ones which burn longer.
I have 2 of each stove. Esbit Stoves were made in Nazi Germany and issued to German Soldiers in World War 2. There was also a Stove issued to American Pilots in World War 2 and I have 2 of these with a few original fuel tablets.
I flip 2 other fuel cartridges over and tuck them in to carry 3. I also believe the British military is using this system, but that could just be advertising.
Those little German surplus stoves are pretty neat, I have the slightly larger British model and a civilian version but dont really use them. Maybe one day Ill make or buy a little alcohol burner to go with them which seems a much more efficient idea.
I made a comparable wind block for my Esbit out of an aluminum pie tin after watching a Yt video on it. Your initial set up and test of the Esbit sounded like despair 🙁
Just as an update: The fuel for these little stoves has come down in price and can be got for 0.37p per block. I don't know what the exchange rate is but no more than 0.50 cents, now that's cheap for a hot drink or water for a meal. Love this little cooker and use it all the time along with its big brother the BCB MKII cook system.

not a fair test. the esbit tablet weighs in at 14grams. the fire dragon weighs in at 27 grams. a fair test is either 2 esbit 14 gr. or buy a 28 gram esbit tablet.
LOL it is funny to see a test like this in a spot filled with twigs. (I get it, it's just a test and out in the world you might not be camping near twigs, but still funny to see).
Esbit can carry 2x the amount of self contained fuel right? Do you really need a boil for water to be scalding hot? Can either burn bio fuel? Small twigs and such?
The fuel from BCB consists of bio-ethanol in gel form, which is basically +90% denatured alcohol and pretty much the best among spirit burner fuels. Esbit tabs seem to consist of hexamine, which comparatively performs rather poorly. BCB is an eco-friendly company that has been producing British military gear for a long time now...

Weird outcome because the energy density of esbit (Hexamine) is much higher than the fire dragon (Alcohol) The outcome was highly influenced by the wind. If you used a small wind cover as by the Fire Dragon you would amazed
I dunno, I've been thinking of buying one of these, but they are heavy for such a tiny stove. Maybe a sterno stove or MSR pocket rocket is worth the weight and bulk.

If I'm not mistaken, Esbit clearly indicates on the box that you should use two small tabs to boil a cup of water.

I never heard of them before, I like those BCB fuel tabs, not only did that light quickly but it boiled the water very fast as well.
Going to buy one of the new stoves. You can also use hexamine tabs in the new BCB Fire Dragon stoves!
You can also put some tin foil in the Fire Dragon tray which makes cleaning a damn sight easier, as you just remove the foil once finished cooking

Esbit also makes the Medium Pocket Stove, which also comes with a windscreen and holds the larger 27g tablets perfectly.

6 27g firedragons can readily be had for £2.00 to £2.50 a go... about 30p a burn. (I guess that's $3 to $ 3&1/2, so about 40c a go.)

If using a lighter, Hold the Esbit up with fuel cube inside, light thru a bottom hole. A little easier.

Instead of the ezbit cubes I use BBQ cubes in the BBQ area of Walmart a fraction of the price

I hate the smell of esbit. The fire dragon does not have a bad smell and it’s non toxic. I haven’t tried my stove yet.
Or you can use wood. Keep a tab for starter. Cut little bits off. My esbit has done great.

If you put a windscreen in front of the debit it will heat up faster, no loss of heat, an yes you can use the fire Dragon tablets as a hand sanitizer.
The fire dragon cubes are alcohol based and can be used as a sanitizer in a pinch.

LOL it is funny to see a test like this in a spot filled with twigs. (I get it, it's just a test and out in the world you might not be camping near twigs, but still funny to see).

Esbit can carry 2x the amount of self contained fuel right? Do you really need a boil for water to be scalding hot? Can either burn bio fuel? Small twigs and such?
Fire Starter You need to boil your water to sterilise it. If you get you’re water from a river always boil it. 👍

I've read that if you break the Esbit tablet in half and burn them side to side it heats much faster. Ever tried that?
He compared the wrong Esbit he should use the larger Modell and use two Tabs for sure.

The fuel from BCB consists of bio-ethanol in gel form, which is basically +90% denatured alcohol and pretty much the best among spirit burner fuels. Esbit tabs seem to consist of hexamine, which comparatively performs rather poorly. BCB is an eco-friendly company that has been producing British military gear for a long time now...

Weird outcome because the energy density of esbit (Hexamine) is much higher than the fire dragon (Alcohol) The outcome was highly influenced by the wind. If you used a small wind cover as by the Fire Dragon you would amazed

I dunno, I've been thinking of buying one of these, but they are heavy for such a tiny stove. Maybe a sterno stove or MSR pocket rocket is worth the weight and bulk.
i can get three dragon tabs in the stove to carry...one right side up, two upside-down.

I split my esbit cubes in half so there are 2 pieces in the stove it will boil water that way
