after getting out of the theatre i had an epiphany: this is (maybe) the first disney musical romance film in a long time. this movie brought me back to the days of enchanted and tangled. for a while now disney has been focused on being “girlboss-y”, and making a point to not give female leads love interests. sometimes this works in their favor, sometimes it feels performative. i don’t know about you, but i’ve been missing the fairytale romance in disney films for a long long time. like i alluded to before, ariel and eric’s new scenes and relationship gave me major tangled and enchanted vibes, which is always very appreciated. i’m hoping disney keeps this theme for rachel zegler’s snow white since i know she was a new flynn rider-esque love interest there.

Loved Little Mermaid, but I want to talk about your POV on the recent "no love interest"/"shame love interests" angle. I definitely agree. Sometimes it works, like with Moana. Her not having a love interest made perfect sense. She's got things to do and her story is more of a self-growth type. Other times it doesn't work, like with Frozen and its "you want to marry a man you just met?!". It felt forceful and like Disney was trying to be "self aware".

    1. I loved how in the original, Eric saved Ariel from Ursula but in the remake she saved him and it was made even more amazing bc her saving him was a full circle moment bc the only reason she knew how to steer the ship into Ursula was bc Ariel watched Eric do it at the beginning of the movie on his birthday.
    2. I loved how in the remake, once Eric realized he was falling for Ariel, he felt no need to continue looking for the girl who saved him. I loved that changed from the original bc in the original, even after he started to have feelings for Ariel, he still looked for ten girl who saved him.
    3. I especially liked that in the remake Ursula made Ariel forget about the kiss. It really added something to the movie bc Ariel wasn’t spending all of her time trying to get a kiss from Eric, it was more him trying to get one from her.
    4. Piggy backing off that last post, this movie was less about Ariel wanting to leave the ocean for a man and more about wanting to be in the world for herself. Eros was just an added bonus. She wasn’t actively seeking him, she was more interested in the world around her.

I’ve noticed the color grading isn’t just an issue for this movie. Recently, every movie I see in theaters I have to squint half the time cuz it’s too dark and I can’t see anything. I honestly would rather wait for movies to come out so I can watch them on my laptop so that I CAN see them and I don’t have to strain my eyes. Maybe my vision has just gotten worse but I am really struggling at the movies and it really ruins the experience.

    1. under the sea; loved it tbh
    2. her on the rock waiting to rise with the waves; idk why she looked so scary and was shaking, laughed ngl

And so is For the First Time! And for me, The Scuttlebutt, too.
      About The Scuttlebutt:
Aside for being randomly stupid to have it as a rap song, it's actually catchy, and thank goodness it doesn't have the major traits of modern rap songs like the background music and its lyrics.
I was skeptical about it at first but when I hear it, I was like, "Oh, that wasn't so bad..." then I kept listening to it and sing along with it.
It was a decent song, no big deal.

Pros : the music, new and old, was great, the music scenes where so much fun, halle was phenomenal, Melisa was spectacular, Sebastian and scuttle, were hilarious, they casted the perfect prince Eric my was he dreamy. I didn’t not feel at all like two hours. All the additional storylines where incredibly enjoyable. Not being bias but I Loved the Caribbean theme, the music and customs.
Cons: I wish we saw more of the other sisters, they were all so beautiful, the end left me wanting more, the sparkly dress scene and wedding scene(either one)were greatly missed. And lastly some scenes(underwater)were way to dark, I’m kinda blind myself so it was a struggle.

So I wasn't sure about watching The Little Mermaid and I really liked it way more than the 1989 animated film. For starters, none of the new songs are bad at all. Aquafina's character suffered a little because Scuttle was way funnier in the animated movie but they did really well with Eric's character. In the 1989 movie, Eric was just a prince (The Little Mermaid's love interest)...but in this one, we get to know a little more about Eric, his likes and dislikes, and how much in common he had with the little mermaid...and to think that I almost did not watch this movie because so many people were complaining about it. By the way...I love how Hallie Bailey and Melissa McCarthy performed as well as Jonah Hauer-King. He was not bad at all. I left the theater feeling good.

It’s interesting for the storytelling.

While I can agree that they didn't re-invent the wheel with this one they definitely enhanced and upgraded by 10 fold, if not more. Giving Ariel more internal struggle and adding in a few details from the sequels to flesh out her family really worked for me - even if I wanted MORE time with the sisters in general as a unit - and Eric is 100% more interesting and fun this time around. I also feel like the intimacy of their connection really shined through by allowing them to be more similar. It also made for a better love story because they fell for the people each of them were and Eric fell for Ariel even as he was searching for the voice that saved him. Her being the owner only made him MORE in love and his protectiveness and amusement of her really sold them as well.
I think a few things definitely could've been tweaked but I adored all of it and can't wait to see the movie again.

Nice video! For me, the lighting worked wonders, even when I wore 3D glasses. 😆 My theory is that the film is going for a more realistic and therefore more mythic view of mermaids and the seas. When you think about it, there are a lot of scary storms at sea and it gets very dark in areas. So I think they may have set this theme throughout the movie. I understand why others are detracted, but it does look grand and more epic.
There were some bright moments of course, like 'Under the Sea' and the iconic rising out of the ocean/hair whip. I just love the cinematography of this film! 🤓👌🏽

i truly loved this movie so much. one minor change that i feel ended up being significant is the change of the placement for "part of your world." in the original it takes place after ariel sees eric, while in this one it happens before. while i hate how often ariel is reduced to "trading her voice just for a man," bc that's certainly not what she is, this change does emphasize her motivations from the beginning much better imo. same thing with "poor unfortunate souls" and removing the body language line. whike ursula still uses the prince is part of her convincing, the primary selling point is ariel's freedom from her father and the cage she has been put in. i think it's so much more impactful and makes a lot more sense for the character.

the lighting issue was my #1 comment abt the film too!! Kiss The Girl is actually my favorite disney song just because it's so fun and light and i was crazy disappointed that the visuals not only didn't have that color and fun the way Under The Sea did but was just so f-ing dark :< Still loved the movie overall tho and kinda want to go see it again rn

I loved the movie and I just saw it for the second time this past weekend. If you were close to the screen maybe that's why you couldn't see that well? I was really close the first time I watched it and it was hard for me to see but from the middle of the theater, I could see everything clearly it was like watching the movie for the first time lol. Loved hearing your thoughts, you're always so thorough.

I also loved the little mermaid because it had a campy quality to it that this remake captured so well. And Vanessa was! Perfect! Ever since I watched the little mermaid I would wait in excitement for Vanessa’s scenes because she was so campy and dramatic. Jessica Alexander captured her so well and Halle was an amazing Ariel ❤️💖🌸
