  • Made using iPad Pro 2020 in the Procreate app with Apple Pencil, using my "Painterly" brush set and the "Van Gogh Flowers" color palette that comes with it. You are very welcome to follow the tutorial with any other brushes you have.
    Painterly Brush set: shop.alainajensen.com/b/paint...
    Specific brushes used:
    - Master Impressionist Dual Color
    - Choppy Strokes Dual Color
    - Dry Oil (Smudge)
    - Dry Oil
    - Super Dry
    - Metallic Strokes
    Canvas size: 12 x 12 inches at 300 DPI.
    For this abstract painting, I first create a base out of neutrals - beige, white, grey, and black. I lay out a basic shape so I know where my areas of color are going to be, and where my white space is going to be. I then add accents of pink, greyish blue, and gold, and begin to blur and smudge it all together using the smudge tool. The idea here is to blend textures and remove some harsh lines while keeping it realistic. I want to still let some of the texture still peek through.
    A Few Tips:
    - When creating abstract art, chaos is your friend! Don't be afraid to get messy, and lean into irregularities.
    - Always use a new layer when adding metallics - If you continuously add to metallics on the same layer, you will get a "washed out" effect which is NOT what you are going for here!
    - Add a few selective pops of bright color
    - Leave some white space to maximize visual interest without the feeling of clutter

    Wow! Let me say that again backwards... wow! First impressions? Bold move using black; fabulous textures; excellent brushes and who could not appreciate the metallic "pop". The beauty of abstract art is we can make it as it pleases us. It’s not something we need to copy exactly but rather use the techniques you share with us. What was on my agenda today will be waiting while I create my own abstract piece 😊. Thank you, Alaina for another tip top tutorial. Cheers, Chrissie

      Wow thank you so much for your kind comment and support! I'm so glad it was inspirational for you. This is one of the reasons I love abstract art, it's just so individual to the creator and really opens up new ways to express oneself.

      There’s a link in the description, it’ll take you to Alaina’s painterly brushes. At the bottom you choose whether you want to buy only the painterly brushes or buy the Upgrade: 2021 bundle to get Alaina’s painterly brushes along with the galaxy brushes and at least 4 more sets that will come out later this year 😊😊

    Nice tut. Would you recommend going digital over old school papper journal? What i see is thats easier to scale, carry around and so on, but is it convenient to transfer your ideas from digital to canvas later.

    • @AlainaJensen
      @AlainaJensen  Před 3 lety +3

      Thank you! For me, digital is easier because it's very quick and easy to get it out and use it for art from any location without having to have a lot of time and space to spread out, then clean up. That said I do love getting messy with the analogue art supplies every now and then!

    Wonderful tutorial ! Thanks for sharing. I noticed something strange with my “Abstract” brushes which come with Procreate. I don’t think I’ve noticed this before but maybe I just didn’t see it but they don’t paint at all with the colors I choose. Is that normal and just a strange effect of them? Ty for any help!

    • @AlainaJensen
      @AlainaJensen  Před 2 lety

      Hey there, I'm glad you like the tutorial! Did you mean the default Procreate brushes in the Abstract folder? Some of them have color dynamics, but you can turn them off by tapping the brush then tapping it again to bring up the brush settings, going to "color dynamics" and turning all the sliders to 0. Probably also best to duplicate the brush before changing the settings.

    How did u find that gold colour?, I find the procreat colours so drab

    • @AlainaJensen
      @AlainaJensen  Před 2 lety +2

      I chose a burnt gold/brown color to use with the metallic brush - if you're getting dull colors you can turn up the "S" slider on the value tab to get more saturation.

    Have you tried printing art with metallic colors? Wondering how well color comes out once printed.

    • @AlainaJensen
      @AlainaJensen  Před 2 lety +1

      I do print the artwork with metallics and it generally prints quite well, but the main thing to keep in mind is that it’s not true metallics when printed, meaning that it won’t reflect light the way real metallics would. It prints out more like a picture of something sparkly, so that it can give the impression of metallics but on closer inspection it’s just a photo, I hope that makes sense?

    I love watching your videos and learning from you but the way you keep zooming out in those fast sudden movements is so disturbing to my eyes that I often can’t watch the videos to the end and that I’m also finding myself looking for other artists to teach me instead 😢

    • @AlainaJensen
      @AlainaJensen  Před rokem

      Hi Mette, I'm so sorry you're having trouble watching the videos! When you say zooming, do you mean that it's going too fast? I'm currently trying to tweak my video speeds because I've had some feedback that I go too fast so I'll be working on slowing down a bit more.
