His resonance was so profound the sound seemed to be coming from the walls. The problem is that he sang at least 20 years past his prime, and people take his late singing as what he always sounded like. It isn’t. I will never forget the sound of his opening ‘Ave Signor’ in a ‘65 ‘Mefistofele’ with Tebaldi in Chicago. Absolutely prodigious.

I've become much less Siepi-centered in listening and shifted my attention to less Italianate sounds and style overall in recent years. Funny how one appreciates less apparent manifestations of beauty as one ages, compared to the striving for perfection (and worshipping of but a few idols) of one's early 20s.

Maybe the real problem is that there are too many elitist snobs out there who know what "true" art is supposed to be like. Maybe the "general" public associates opera and classical music with prudish, snobs who look down on said "general" public, thus making it a negative association.

I don't think Ghiaurov could sing Boccanegra. And his low notes are better than most basses.
