Great performance from their European tour in 1992. Sax: Michael Brecker Trumpet: Randy Brecker Keys: George Whitty Guitar: Mike Stern Bass: James Genus Drums: Dennis Chambers
This is how all jazz should be filmed. With these random cuts to super high contrast, black and white, shots. And all jazzists should dress like Mikey here.
I saw Michael Brecker at a jazz club in Uppsala, Sweden, in the mid-90s. On the last song he impressed by putting away the saxophone and sitting behind the drum set. Regular drummer hit with a trumpet and played amazing trumpet solo and Michael Brecker played amazingly well on the drums. I'll never forget this.
Of all of Micheal’s solo in Skunk Funk, this solo was the best version. This is the ultimate solo to learn for any jazz musician especially for a tenor sax player.
Jonathan Aviles I get that Coltrane has that legacy but I truly believe that Brecker took Coltrane’s technique and just somehow made it even better man.
Fantastic. Randy Brecker did a master class at my high school in 2005 and I got the chance to play this song with him. He was amazing to work with. It's pretty sad, Michael got sick shortly after we worked Randy, and Randy broke contact with our band leader at that time. RIP Michael
The recorder player is Benoit Sauve, I am a recorder player myself so I have watched that clip many times. Note that Benoit has his right hand on top, normaly you have the left hand there. If you think the clip has been reversed, I can tell you its not, he is playing that way. This also means that his recorder/s has been changed, for example placing the finger holes in a different way and also the way you drill and shape the holes. It is quite complicated to manufacture a high quality recorder. If you want to listen to maybe the best recorder player today, search "Kristine West recorder - Full Movie". This swedish girl is an outstanding musician, listen f e to the first piece by Vivaldi. The recording was made in Vätö church, Sweden. Enjoy!
Some of the best drummers in the world have played this tune with the Brecker Brothers. But none of them can touch Dennis Chambers. I hope he is in good health.
His technical ability I feel is still unmatched to this day. Look at his ability to switch from normal notes to those that are harmonic or altissimo notes. Never ceases to amaze me
Hey, ALL of these players are monsters, truly, there isnt even the remotest weak link on stage, but Chambers freaks me out, damn! Guys like that block many from ever playing, simply for the reason, they know they'll never get close.
RIP Mike Brecker. Even though I've played tenor myself since 1973, your stunning virtuosity never ceases to amaze me. Thank you for everything you' did for the saxophone, for music, and for humanity.
Michael Brecker takes that horn to places it's never visited before.....and us along with it.....RIP Michael , bet you"re raising some musical hell in heaven !
Wow I didn't expect to find this. Summer of 1992, I was there, in the audience recording the set to my portable Sony DAT machine. Michel Camilo also played that night with Dave Weckl and Anthony Jackson. - an evening to remember......
I played lead trumpet on this chart in our Jazz and Contemporary Ensemble in the Fall of 1976...It was a challenge... Our jazz big band was scaled down to a combo with two trumpets, one trombone, two saxes, and guitar, bass, and drums...
31 years ago, I watched the Michael Brecker Band in Tokyo (with Mike Stern, Kenny Kirkland, Jeff Andrews and Omar Hakim). I split a cab back to the hotel with Michael. It was my first trip to Japan and I was really jet lagged. On the way back, we discussed this tune.
Something cool: I thought at times James Genus was playing slap, but it looked he wasn't doing it except after the start of Randy's solo, but then I realized that the bass drum and the bass had a hit at the same time, so that made it sound like slap.
I've listened to this tune I'd say over 100 times in the past week. They just tear this up. I wish I hadn't just been born less than year before this was recorded. Man.
Rayan Aridi I just learned from watching this video that when in doubt if you don't find the studio version of certain songs very good, check out the live version. Especially for jazz. Studio version lacked soul, but this version is like emotional pinball!
Definitely how you should lean into a solo break. So many players leave it open. You gotta carry the energy and intensity from the rhythm section, or create it yourself.
I just can't believe how shy the man was. The supreme inspiration to the socially phobic amonst us. THAT is the most extraverted sound you ever heard! God bless you Mike!!
Playing this song should be considered a sport.
Playing jazz is a sport*
no doubt, unbelievable,
Lol
Watching it certainly is, I just lost 5 pounds...
This is hard-jazz-rock! or hard-fusion if you like.
This was my wedding song. It always makes me cry.
Rob Carter you sir have huge balls to play this at a wedding. Major kudos
@@nickman9639 literally xddd
Good choice. I bet your wife cries a log (for different reasons). Anyways, I'm on your side :)

the Chick Corea Elektric Band music videos from the early 90's tick all of those points haha...

Probably one of THE best sax solos I've ever heard. RIP

It’s one of his best solos and I’ve heard hundreds of them.
You should hear the guy who replicates his sax solo on recorder.

「Some Skunk Funk」の衝撃は未だ衰えず・・・これぞ「クロス・オーバー」の真髄!!。
R.I.P・・・Michael .
Best solo ever. There's no argument . Michael is the most technically sound tenor player that ever lived.
Lester?
Alexander Johns he's close but brecker is king
Chris potter can't play blues though. brecker is the package
estouffl stouffl If Chris Potter can't play blues then I may as well throw my Alto out the window! Haha
Uhmm... Coltrane? Lester Young?
. The only recording I have heard at this ridiculous tempo. Monsters!
Check out the japan ones!!
literally the sexiest sax solo in existence. gives me chills.
that crunchy altissimo G at 2:30 ish...

You certainly won't with that attitude
My god, that section of the solo that starts at 2:36 is absolutely INSANE!!! It makes my head explode....in a good way.

We all know what head Michael makes explode😂❤❤ 🎷

just the craziest funk i've ever heard!!!
+Павло Молюков You should listen the panzerballett version.
Why?
this is the most intense preformance, my personal favorate by the Brecker brothers especially Michael, may he rest in peace. I THINK THIS IS BEAST!
I have regularly revisited this exact performance since around 2008
Brecker is rushing and dragging, rocking the tune big time. Such an inspiring musician..
THIS is one of the most difficult song to play i've ever heard, almost impossible.
Best saxophonist, over all, Michael...

Right to the flat 5 but then a great line after that chord their playing on is tough
The bass is thundering the whole
