    Been stressing about what to put up for my bf's wall closet that I created for him and feeling inspired by the way you hung these! I want the doors to open from either direction, but definitely want the center to meet the way you hung these! Also, I will be hanging from the ceiling, so will need longer doors. Thanks for taking the time to post this video!

    • @DoThingsMakeStuff
      @DoThingsMakeStuff  Před 7 lety +5

      Hi Judy,
      The great things about using standard doors is that they come in all different widths. I used 24" doors to fill out my 96" space. If you have 120 inches, you could use 32" doors, and you will have a couple inches of overlap. Your biggest hurdle is that you will need 2 pieces of track or see if they can custom order you a longer piece of track. If you use two pieces, you will have to line them up very nicely, so they slide all the way across. You can do it!!

  • @tegmapat11
    @tegmapat11 Před 5 lety +3

    I think I would have made one big door out of two smaller ones. That way you'd only have 2 doors to bypass each other rather than four. Four doors will be too much for a young boy to deal with as he grows. And yes, when you make a video, people want to see the end products working.

    • @DoThingsMakeStuff
      @DoThingsMakeStuff  Před 5 lety +1

      tegma two doors is something we talking about but my wife likes the middle doors on the front track and the outside doors on the back track so two doors wouldn’t work for what we wanted. well, I do believe that most people who are drawn towards this sort of video are novices with the exception of a few pros who do seek the confidence or a sort of refresher course before attempting a job, with all due respect to your technique, i believe highlighting such an issue like the side of the line to cut to is crucial, like how one may prefer not use a guard on a power tool like the table saw but still recommend it, to cover the bases...

    The opening in my newly constructed washer and dryer area is ht 80 x 81 wide. The washer and dryer space depth is 34 but the frame is built out to accommodate the tracks. I need four 20 inch doors as stack sliders. I can have doors made and have them thinner ..but will I be able to put four tracks up. And should I place a recessed track on the bottom? Thanks

    • @DoThingsMakeStuff
      @DoThingsMakeStuff  Před 4 lety

      I'm not 100% sure you would want 4 tracks but yes you would just get two kits. Each kit has 2 tracks so you can just mount them one in front of the other! the bottom uses a guide and you're for sure going to need some extra ones!

    • @DoThingsMakeStuff
      @DoThingsMakeStuff  Před 7 lety +2

      Cynthia Vanbiene thanks for the question! The kid does come with some floor guides and I'll make an update video showing them. A some screws will hold them down tight. We have laminate flooring in the bedroom that it is attached to. If you have tile,concrete or some other harder material you can also use screws but you will have to use a masonry drill bit first, as well as some masonry screws.
      My wife decided it would be better to have two of the doors attached together which changes the opening. I'll show that in the follow up video as well!
      Thanks for tuning in!

    I have been reading the video again and again because I am trying to install the closet door in the same way. One question here is why you said you would cut the top 3/4 inch and the bottom 1 inch, but actually you cut 1-3/4 at the bottom only?

    • @DoThingsMakeStuff
      @DoThingsMakeStuff  Před 4 lety +1

      wow so sorry I just saw this comment. I Would cut them that way so that the spacing between the door panel was similar at the top and bottom. You are correct I did it with just the bottom because it was less work to just add a support piece back in the bottom!

    • @DoThingsMakeStuff
      @DoThingsMakeStuff  Před 7 lety

      Good Catch! I thought there was less before I cut the door. It ended up having almost 2" of material at the bottom. On previous projects, I have need to cut more than the block at the bottom of the door. If you need to cut off more than the 2" you need to either peel off the door facing from either side of the block you cut out or it may be easier to cut a new spacer from pine and glue it in yourself!

    Hi I partitioned an area in my basement and made sort of a walking closet for my wife. However I need an idea to cover it I can't do the sliding doors because I have suspended ceilings which I can't screw the guide rails onto. Any thoughts on what I can do?

    • @DoThingsMakeStuff
      @DoThingsMakeStuff  Před 4 lety

      Hey! If you’re thinking something similar why don’t you add a header with some supports on the sides. The doors are very light and typically with a drop ceiling it can support some weight as long as it’s evenly distributed. What if you did a stub wall on the side that supported a header and then ran normal closet slide if doors that roll on the ground. That way there is no weight up top, the top is just a guide. And at that point the header really just needs to be something strong enough not to bow in the center. You can screw through the top of the drop ceiling just so they are lightly attached so it doesn’t move. That would be my thought

    • @DoThingsMakeStuff
      @DoThingsMakeStuff  Před 7 lety

      Hi Victoria,
      If the total high is 82" you should be able to do it! My opening is between 80" and 80.5 and I actually had to cut the bottom of my doors to fit as well as adjust them up to the maximum height. Worst case would be that you might need to shim the whole frame down. I would find a 3/4" piece of wood, stain it or paint it to make a frame for the closet that would make the height a little bit less, also use the casing to level it out!
      Use 32" doors, and they will overlap just a little bit which should give you a great looking closet door! You can do it!

    • @DoThingsMakeStuff
      @DoThingsMakeStuff  Před 7 lety

      Charles Curry thank you for the comment! Two 30" wide doors will be great but the height is where things will get fun. 78.75" tall means you are going to have to cut the doors shorter or order some custom height doors. When you choosing a door style make sure it is one that give you plenty of room to remove material and not look uneven.
      You may be removing up to 3" or more, so your best bet may be removing equal amounts from the top and bottom.
      You've got a little bigger project on your hands but very doable! Good luck and send me a message if you have any more questions!

      Thanks for responding so quick. I think maybe just some plain 30x 80 solid core doors? That way can cut as much as I need. I'll let you know how it goes.

    Why didn't you include video showing how the doors slide by each other ? I waited and waited to see how 4 doors in one opening function, so disappointed you didn't think to include that !

    So the bottom doesnt need a trail like the upper?

    • @DoThingsMakeStuff
      @DoThingsMakeStuff  Před 5 lety +1

      Oshrit Appelboim Giese the bottom doesn’t need a track like the top. It does comes with a set of guides that attach to the floor so the doors don’t swing in and out. I didn’t add these when I made the video but I’m going to now maybe not

    Hi, thank you for the video, do you remember how much you might have paid for the track? They can be a bit expensive from what I've seen so I was wondering if you could let us know. Thanks!

      Hey Rob thanks for the reply! I didn’t show a good chunk of finishing details that I plan on doing a video for next week. Now that the video is a year only it’s probably a year overdue!

    You should have purchased two wider doors. Home depot also have doors that dont have the door lock cut out.

    • @DoThingsMakeStuff

      Michael Lee thanks for the comment Michael! The cut outs are nice because if gives you something to hold onto when you slide the doors. Unless they have cut outs without the side cut for the bolt?
      My wife is a crazy fan of symmetry I’m not sure she would have let me go with different size doors!
