    Ahh Nikea; Where the Emperor of Mankind shoot himself in the foot so hard, several of the Word Bearers thought Chaos must have planned it all along.
    Alienating Magnus (the most important Primarch for the Emperors future plans)
    Pissing of Perturabo, by using his beautiful creation as an arena to condemn one of the few brothers, the Lord of Iron liked, and most grievous of all;
    Depriving the Loyal Legions of their best weapons against Chaos, just as Chaos was beginning its final play.
    it is no wonder, that The Lion, The Angel, Guilliman, Jagatai khan and even Rogal Fucking Dorn eventually decided to ignore the Edict, because it was stupidity of colossal Majesty.

    When it was mentioned that there would be an excerpt of the speech by Magnus the Red, I was certain that I would hear Zegram's familiar voice, and pleased to be proven right. That man has truly become Magnus for many of us. On the subject of the video itself, Oculus (the character) seems to be struggling with himself so much lately, as the mistakes and imperfections of the Emperor slowly come to bear. He clings to the Emperor's divinity, refusing to question even as he rails against the Emperor's flaws in others.... I am so interested to see where this all leads...

I think the huge amount of ambiguity in 40k is used to maximum effect here in regards to the emperor's character and intentions. he makes mistakes like any other man, but still uses the imagery of divinity to attract followers and represent humanity. all these contradictions I think will be used as a 'just as planned' or 'there was no other way' by the big E when the story progresses.

    Hmm, it always seems interesting the chaos gods ultimately went after the psychic of the family who researched his powers as much as he could, and had an understanding of them beyond simple superstitions. Makes me feel he was a priority to take out, not simply because he could have powered the golden throne (thus freeing up the Emperor and Malcador) but his approach to psychic powers was something they really didn’t want to become wide spread, let alone his approach to scholarly pursuits or society building. It’s a personal head canon that the reason planets that accepted psychers were destroyed by warp entities wasn’t because the larger number of psychers made it easier, but because they needed to kill that mentality wherever they could so they doubled their efforts there. And all those worlds with insane psychics running around, those worlds they specifically worked to drive the local psychics insane/helped them conquer their worlds as to encourage a hatred of psychics. In short, I think the Council of Nikea played out exactly the way they wanted it to.

  • @jamescousins9216
    @jamescousins9216 Před 3 lety +45

    I think Magnus' reaction of this whole thing being a setup was absolutely on point. The point wasn't to debate the Librarians. If it were, Sanguinius, the originator of the institution, and Jaghatai Kahn would've had to debate Mortarion and Russ. The Council of Nikaea was to close the issue of Psykers in the Legions before the Emperor could turn his gaze away from the galaxy and focus entirely upon the Webway Project. It was expedient politics, plain and simple. The naysayers would get what they wanted and psykers removed from the foremost authority outside the Imperial Household and Malcador's own networks. The proponents would suffer no further rebuke, and told to continue as they were, perhaps implicating that Sanguinius' decision to not disband his Legion's Librarians was anticipated.
    But to Magnus... to deny him psychic powers was to deny his own *identity*. Credit to the scriptwriting and Zegram's voice acting, I think this new response by Magnus showed the thing the Emperor worried about the most: Magnus said *he was willing to leave the Imperium* if it turned their backs on his ideas. That is where the seeds of betrayal that Horus would later cultivate into a wicked fruit were sown in Leman Russ. That is why the Emperor threatened such destruction. He would not simply cover up Magnus' failure, like the two in the Rangdan Xenocides. He would make an *example* of him, his sons, and his world. That is a far deeper wound than the limp-wristed censures applied to the World Eaters and Word Bearers. For Lorgar, the Heresy began in the ashes of Monarchia. But for the true first battle of the Heresy, the act that Horus needed to occur before the purges of Istvaan III and massacre of IV, the funeral pyre of Prospero was lit at Nikaea.
    The Emperor declared war on the Thousand Sons at that very moment.

Perhaps if the Emperor had taken his time to soothe the wounds of the primarchs and teach them why it had to be that way perhaps they would not have fallen into the waiting clutches of the Chaos Gods. The Primarchs for all their superhuman gifts are at the end of the day still all too human in mind.

It seems remarkably strange how the Emperor, with his thousands of years of experience, didn't understand how this pronouncement would influence Magnus. The Council of Nikea was by far one of the most important events that happened within the Great Crusade, and the matters spoke of during this Council between the Emperor and his Sons must have been dealt with. One must remember that during those early days of the Imperium that one of the most constant enemies that we faced were rogue psykers warlords, and many within the Imperium were questioning the usage of Psykers within the Imperium armies. Many within the Imperium remember Old Night, they remember the horrors of that terrible age where psykers run amok across the Galaxy, and plunge many planets into living nightmares. Many of the Primarchs homeworlds were planets that were affected by psykers in horrible ways, but Magnus the Red made several valid points within the Council of Nikea for the usage of psykers of not just within the Imperium military, but also others fields were they could surely do good across the Imperium territory. Shocking the hypocrisy of the Wolf King is quite immense, he argued that his Rune Priests were different from other psykers, and that they should be except from the edict, perhaps there was more than just fear of psykers within Leman perhaps here truly hated Magnus and his liberal usage of his powers, one can never truly know what happened during that Council, but we know that this event forever damned the Thousand Sons Legion to Chaos, and weaken the Imperial defenses against the immaterial.

      It's made clear why Russ wanted the liberius stopped and why the Emperor allowed Russ to keep using his Rune Priests. The difference between a Rune Priest and a Thousand Sons Sorcerer is the Rune Priest knows when to stop. Russ is a hyoercrite but in the end its one of those hard facts where Russ is right to the point that Magnus' biggest supporters and co founders of the Liberius (Sanguinius and the Khan) agreed with Russ in the end. Leaving Magnus unchecked was a very bad idea.

      Russ' stance is hypocritical for sure. There's a passage somewhere were Bjorn starts to say something about it to Russ, but quickly thinks better of it and takes a different tact, which I thought was quite funny.
      I'm think Russ may genuinely believe it though, and there does seem to be some lore aspects that suggest he's sort of right too. The runes supposedly act like a filter, or remove the user from the effects of the warp by a step. Russ has a conversation with Jagatai about it in one of the books and compares the stormseers and rune priests favourably compared to the other legions librarius's.
      Ultimately though, I like how complicated Russ is. And I like that you're never quite sure if he's exactly what he seems.

    • @absolute-focus
      @absolute-focus Před 3 lety +2

      @@Golmov_the_Wretched Russ does understand how the warp works his problem with it is the same as the Emperor's, who can be trusted with it. The Emperor let Magnus create the Liberius and did warn him about the dangers of it but only lightly which was the Emperor's mistake. But Russ wasn't wrong is saying he believed that only the Rune Priests and Stormseers of the White Scars could be trusted because they drew on the warp in a more tempered controlled way unlike most other legions and especially the Thousand Sons who jumped on head first. The only reason the Emperor let the Wolves keep using there Rune Priests and not let the White Scars is because he didn't trust The Khan and says in it the Vengeful Spirit novel that out of all the Primarchs he knew Russ would never betray him.
      In the end Russ believed if all the Legions drew on the warp in the same way as the Rune Priests and Stormseers he wouldn't have a problem with the Liberius and Sanguinius and The Khan (two of Magnus' biggest supporters and co founders of the Liberius) agreed with Russ and his actions on the matter.

      @@riggaden4248 interesting, although if you consider that Our Glorious Overlord never wanted an Imperium like the 41st Millennium because he contested just as much against religious orthodoxy as he did against reckless pursuit of knowledge in the darkness of The Warp, then we can assume that the very nature of mankind can stymie consciousness just as much as it enables someone to become enlightened. Magnus, and even Mortarion could not have agreed with the outcome, but the true nature of the tragedy was that they could not have had the chance to find that conciliatory middle ground and understand one another, as well as their Father. That's where the full depth of our tragedy lies.

    1:53 **SAPIENCE* is the word you probably meant there.
    A -worm- dog is sentient, way too many do the mistake.
    Sapience is the ability to think, remember and use logic.
    BTW this is where the _sapien_ in homo _sapien sapien_ come from.
    greater explanation in a comment in the reply.

    • @alganhar1
      @alganhar1 Před 3 lety +7

      Not quite.
      The difference between sentience and sapience is that sentience is the ability to feel, perceive or experience subjectively. In Western Philosophy Sentience is the ability to 'feel', but not neccessarily the ability to 'think'. From a biological point of view anything with a nervous system as simple as an annelid (the group Earthworms belong to) are not in fact sentient. They have no brain, merely a collection of ganglions, thus do not have a true central nervous system controlled by a single brain (or primary brain in the case of organisms like Cephalopods). Animals with true central nervous systems do come closer to or reach sentience, and in some cases, such as Bottle Nose Dolphins, Orca's and both species of Chimpanzees arguably surpass it. Very few invertebrates are considered sentient, some Cephelapods (Octopi, squid and cuttlefish) being the only examples.
      Sentience is generally used in most countries as the bar for Animal Rights, animals that are considered sentient get rights, those that are not, do not. The difficulty of course is proving sentience.... EDIT: Protecting an endangered species is not protecting their rights, it is protecting their survival, there is a difference.... Though it is generally easier to gain protection of a species is Ecologists can prove said species is sentient.... We generally protect non sentient species by protecting their habitats, not the organisms themselves....
      Sapience is the ability to think and act using knowledge, experience, insight, understanding and common sense. There are very few animals that approach this mark on Earth, the four I mentioned above being the closest, though others do show evidence of learning and insight, many Corvids (Crow family) for example. EVen so few other than some dolphins (Bottlenose and Orcas both being Dolphins), certain other Cetaceans (the whale family), and the Chimpanzees are the only animals that arguably approach Sapiance.
      Apologies, but the question 'What is Intelligence' is a pretty big one in many fields of Biology at the moment, and as you can probably work out it is both complex, and has no single answer that everyone agrees on. Rather like what is a species.... Again a question that is actually more complex than non Biologists realise, and also does not have a single answer. Look up Species Concepts if you do not believe me :)

    48:17 - I love part where Oculus is accusing Magnus of altering the "true ending" to suit his needs (which TBF he probably did when he talked about the men heaping praise on the protagonist for enlightening them). While he himself seems to be confidently reciting a modified version of the story that was probably also altered to suit someone else's needs. Its a great little detail of world building and a reminder that most of our history is lost forever in the world of 40k.

    The Ordo Sinister finds Primarch Mortarion a rather foul and pathetic character. Primarch Magnus the Red King is naive and ambitious but it is in his nature as he is a Demi God.

    Excellently written and narrated sir. One nit-pick though - I appreciate that you were trying to make Mortarian, Magnus and The Emperor sound as though they were speaking in a massive auditorium but the slap-back echo effect just didn't work. If you do something like that in future use a reverb effect. Even in Audacity you have a choice of algorithms so just pick one that comes closest to whatever 'space' you're trying to convey. I haven't checked exactly what Audacity has available but for the character's speeches something like 'Cathedral' or even 'Large Hall' would have been more effective.

    The Edict of Nikaea is one of the prime reasons which point people toward the conclusion that the Emperor had foreknowledge of coming events, and perhaps even planned them to some degree. Why would someone plan such things though. Ascension to Warp-Godhood possibly... or perhaps to stride the single narrow and treacherous path to Mankind's redemption. Maybe GW will give some further, less ambiguous clues in the future. All that being said, thanks for the great video!

    Hiya Oculus!
    There are Few instances among Tubers of the 40k fandom that totally, completely and Artfully EMBODY a Role within a Setting.
    Let alone just be a Stand Out for that particular fandom.
    Out of the bunch, you and Valrak stand out the most for me. Sure there's Tons of Loremasters out there. Some immature, others the narration grates the ears, others come across as a little bland.
    With Valrak it's just his honest unbridled LOVE and Appreciation of the universe, the lore, the game itself, videogames, the new Figures from not 1 but 2 makers, one of which being McFarlane Toys including Blank, Paint your own figures. His excitement is Honest, his criticisms are Honest and Hopeful. His videos if Anything are the Best Examples of ENCOURAGEMENT for the Future of 40k in a way that Games Workshop itself could gauge Anything they're planning off of him Because he's the PERFECT FAN of 40K. He's literally the enthusiasm of Every 40k fan rolled into One Guy with a Fist Fetish.
    You on the other hand good sir...are an Artist. You've created an online persona OF the Universe to interact and inform your viewers on 40k lore in probably the most relaxing and Entertaing way SUITABLE For Presenting this universe.
    It's SO good that I cant miss out on new videos. Your channel as far as I am aware is the only dedicated 40k Lore channel presented In Character.
    Others will follow your lead I am sure but I dont know if they will Understand how to present it as you do so well.
    Like, take Geek Culture channels, theres a Ton of them, however theres only One stand out among them. DOOMCOCK.
    Sure this Dr. DOOM knockoff is entertaining, but like Valrak his passion is used in defense of geek Culture to Enormous influential effect. Like Valrak he is honest, educated and plays out his disdain for the damage caused to some of geek cultures biggest fandoms by Corporate greed in his videos.
    Point being he Stands out using creativity to do his work.
    Otherwise it gets down to personality, sense of humor and charisma for other Tubers like Markiplier and other big names to get by on.
    But there's something else in your work, in your acting. In that same purity of content delivery you've made, that like Valrak, I forsee Great things for you and this channel.
    So much so that I have a simple question for your character.
    "Which is your favorite Astartes chapter, and person or person's within it? As in who would you Absolutely have a Fan Moment and just lose your composure to meet in person? If you could hang out with one chapter or ASTARTES, for a full day and talk about Anything....who would that be? Who would have answers to some of your most Burning Questions?
    Because of How you present your character and your work these questions pop to mind Not as a Fan...but as if I'm just another Imperial citizen, a fellow scholar checking out whatevers topics you have been working on.
    Your acting talent is IMMERSION.
    And only the Best can deliver and elucidate so well.
    As more animated video content Like ASTARTES and The Death of Hope get created, the forthcoming tv and online shows will provide you with more visual aids to spice up what you show to back up your chosen topics. I only mention this as there's seems only so much art can be recycled so much...other than that tiniest of things, I am MORE than just impressed by your work.
    And I Encourage you to not only continue and grow...but find a way to Immerse us More.
    So I have a HUMBLE suggestion. I have to scroll back through your videos, but I could be wrong here, you dont have a video on Captain Titus from the Space Marine video game. If you do I apologize as I haven't watched Every video. I'll get around to it though.
    The reason I mention this is to present a method of video presentation for your unequaled narrative skills so they match.
    Space Marine and Space Hulk, Both Games have exceptionally detailed environments.
    A few gamer channels dedicated to Walkthroughs and Level Exploration, essentially turn off all Enemy assets and they Just walk around and Look at the map levels. Between Soacemarine and Space Hulk, Hulk is probably The Most Beautifully detailed 40k game map You could get and have on PC to have and Add the odd Walkthrough Clip to match topics, Tones, or the Music you select for the background.
    Sure it would be a Shit Ton more work...but I will DARE to Suggest that the Visuals thus far in All your videos shared a SAMENESS with the rest of the 40k Lore content creators. Honestly theres Nothing wrong with that at all. Yours stands out Because of How you do it Differently from Everyone Else in the Same Content Boat.
    I'll offer up another Dare as I Believe, because of your chosen acting methodology this might be right up your alley.
    I will hazard a guess from your accent that you live in the UK.
    I know a few expats so i dont assume you live back home.
    BUT if you do ..then you are Geographically closest to the largest space marine and 40k COSPLAYERS on ALL of Holy TERRA...as well as some of the most Gothic Buildings and Cemeteries...all within your Driving or Lol, cycling range. (Protect that elbow!)
    You dont need to rely on possibly copyright strikes from using fair use videogame footage...you could literally Film Your Own.
    Not making a fan film or nothing. But you could Easily contact any of them, who I'm Sure the chances of them knowing who YOU ARE is Extremely HIGH, and would be More than willing to dress up and stand in a church or mausoleum hallway and pose or stand still, look around. Take shots like in a MineralBlu Cosplay showcase video. Slow panning while the model turns and looks menacing as directed.
    Anyways...that's just a thought. I hope my own respect and admiration for your work comes through and only see my suggestions as Wishes for Your own success and continued growth and evolution.
    Your contemporaries are fine...just You Oculus, you are the BEST of All of them.
    Reason I'm Gushing is I had an image pop into my head. There was a kid show when I was a tyke called The Hilarious House of Frightenstein. In a segment called the Librarian an white long haired librarian shuffles with a cane and a book under his arm to sit down and laughingly try to scare kids with stories of terror like Mary had a Little Lamb.
    Because of that beloved memory, a clip I invite you to look up for yourself and laugh at and enjoy for a brief moment. It inspired a vision of you, actually dressed up in character, shuffling onto a similar set, not as dusty and half the cobwebs, lit by candle, flatscreen and servite lights.
    No cane but back bent similarly to that of Billy Van as the Librarian, only back bent to Purpose, a heavy ancient book in one arm and a bundle of scrolls ,shears, maps and data packs hanging haphazardly from a shoulder bag as you enter your chamber to present your latest record account.
    We never quite get to see your face under the red hood in any one angled shot from around the chamber. We can imagine the whole face stitched together but we never get shown in full. This is on purpose as your character is in your Voice.
    From there we cut from beginning to speaking into a vox mic and passing drippy wax candles and a servite skull as we cut into a video clip or still picture for your chosen topic.
    Invite Fans to Make Props for a Set in the attic, basement or garage, friends flat, whatever, you CAN make something like this happen. Halloween sales are right around the corner bub. Let that planted seed germinate next time you walk past the Halloween displays at the shops ok!!
