      Yes it is, truly masterpiece of art even more than simply a boardgame. I've never thought I would be able to experience something like this until I played This War Of Mine.
      But need to respect that this game is not for everyone, many peole can feel distracted from this game and it's okay.
      But I am glad there are also many fans of this game too.
      I am proud of Awaken Realms, creator of this game Michał Oracz, that their boardgame found a way in to many boardgamers shelves hehe, cause I am Pole too

    This World of Mine is such a great engrossing experience. It’s one of a kind. It’s not about the winning it’s about the story along the way. If you ever heard about the anime movie - Graves of the Fireflies, it’s in the same vein. Why do we play it? Well I don’t most of the time because it takes a toll out of you, but maybe every extended holiday, I’ll make a day out of it experience the story again. The story is never the same btw.

    Having played the computer game, the board game for This War of Mine is such a lovely thought-provoking game. I think that's the main reason I enjoy it - it's less emotionally punishing than the original and has enough emotional engagement that I feel that it's a puzzle you get close to solving, if not for a few unlucky rolls. Much like other co-operative games (like Pandemic, Arkham Horror and spin-offs) there's a great deal of "we'll do it next time!" draw - though the play-time gets it to the table less often.

    Dale of Merchants sits on my shelf, proudly, as a unique deckbuilder, different compared to any other one I own. I put it next to Core Worlds as being fun and unique. Dale is best played by those who understand the economy of the cards and then being able to swiftly pivot from playing cards for cool effects, to doing the math to get your stalls out. Sure some folks would prefer to be doing the cool card combo stuff for effects, but being able to balance that with getting the cards for the stalls, is where the fun for me is. I hear what you are saying, but having played this at 3 and 4 players, it is a different experience.

    Ishtar is a wonderful "advanced" family game that flows very well. The way your "garden" builds up progressively in front of your eyes is very cool and the game has some great mechanisms, notably the "upgrade tree" where you can strategize your own path to victory. It has a lot of depth with just a few rules.
    Moreover, I feel it's kind of unfair to reproach to the game its "weight". Nothing surprising about it... After all, it's a Iello game made by Bruno Cathala. Both the publisher and the designer are reknown for their family games (although Cathala has also shown its brilliance with some heavier stuff such as Five Tribes, Yamatai, Cyclades or Imaginarium) and Ishtar was never expected to be a heavy beast of a game.

      I understand youre issue with this game and agree with the point you have made. For me personally this is probably the only game I don't mind losing. Don't get me wrong I rather win. But I do like the overall experience during play the unique feel and story that this game gives you even tough its dark and depressing. I think the part in which this game excels are the storybits and the choices you are given during play wich make you feel like you are actually trying to survive during war. But to be honest if this game would have a better win/lose ratio it would probably hit the table more often then it does now.

    TWOM is not post-apocaliptic. It's depiction of Sarajevo siege in 1992-1996. TWOM is a story that shows how fucked up it is to be a civilian during a war. Very difficult to win, very educative and educational. Stays in my collection forever.

  • @ktshipman21
    @ktshipman21 Před 2 lety

    This War of Mine is a masterclass in what a board game could be. Beautifully-designed, and with a message. We have movies, books, and even video games with heavy subject matter. Why are there so few board games that tackle these subjects? The whole purpose of this game (and the video game, for that matter) is to show that in war, there are no winners. You may survive, but at what cost? I personally don't feel like board games can achieve the level of immersion that other mediums can, due to the fact that there's always a degree of separation between you and the board you're looking at. But This War of Mine is the closest I've ever found to achieving that goal. You feel the weight of every decision. You regularly have to decide between doing what is "right" and doing what you have to just to survive. It gives people a look into what some people live through every single day, in a way that most of us will never experience.
    It is BRUTALLY hard, yes. But it has to be. If it was easy to win, the whole purpose of the game falls flat on its face. The civil war in the game is loosely based on Sarajevo during the Bosnian War from '92-'95, and it succeeds on every level. In that war, over 100,000 people died, and 2.2 million people were forcibly displaced. So an easy win does not fit the heart of the game. A win needs to feel hard-won. Impossible, even. Even when I have managed to win, I don't feel relief. I don't feel good. I don't feel happy. Because throughout the experience, I had to do some messed up stuff. I felt helpless, alone. I felt like I barely made it so many times. In a weird way, this is the BEST outcome for this game. It is a somber reminder of the horrors endured by people throughout history. They did not shy away from the subject matter, but rather embraced it. Most games of this type would give you a giant brick wall of a man and a full armory of guns and you'd be gunning down swathes of bland, nameless NPCs, but TWOM's approach is different. Sure, you may have weapons. Sure, you can gun down everyone in the room. But you're weak. The people you can fight have personalities. You don't want to fight them, and they don't want to fight you. But sometimes, you don't have a choice. And that's where this game soars. As I said before, this game didn't just set out to make a fun experience. They wanted to tell a story and teach a lesson. I think every gamer should play this game. I think it should be played in history classes.
    To sum up, play the game. Even if you don't like it, it is an experience like no other in board games. I really hope we get more games like this in the future.

    Man, Alex is SO wrong about TWoM. One of the best narrative, story-driven games I've ever played. The punishing difficulty makes those moments of victory so good and memorable. It COULD NOT be the same if it wasn't so brutal, and I would argue it would be worse for it. And keep in mind, I don't even like games that are difficult just for the sake of being difficult. For real though, play this one solo to enjoy it. It's not a sit around the table and laugh with your friends game, its like playing The Last of Us, or watching Eternal Sunshine.
