THANKS for this video ! If schedule works out, I will be doing the 4 Pass Loop in about one month. Along with Kraig's video, these shots increase the excitement - I can't wait to get on this trail. I am a little concerned about altitude acclimation. Had intended to skip Geneva Lake, but now I may plan to camp there.
That wide shot at 7:55... you had to want that one. It was a great shot and a great video. Glad you decided to keep doing these types along with your informative ones. You remember when we were growing up and the parents would make home movies that we would barely ever watch? We'll, I've found making these trip videos really let me relive the trip in a big way. It’s going to disappoint you…but that isn’t me at 7:55 😬🤣. I think you have a point about the home movies. It makes me think about vacation slideshows and how our parents used to hold their friends and relatives captive in the living room with a slide projector. Every time I see some old guy take a picture of something no one wants to see I think about that…and then I think I at least found a way to share my vacation photos with people who a actually want to see them. 😉😊

I love to share them too, but for me personally, the process of adding the emotive elements makes me really feel the trip again... and that's what the old slide shows were supposed to do and never quite could. Oh, and it's still a great shot.
Love this video. Great video work. I look forward to more videos like this. I love the occasional gear load out, but seeing someone hike a trail is downright spiritual when you are stuck at work.
2 questions: 1) At the risk of sounding ignorant (and it's something I should know), what was the jar for that you had put in the bush in the morning after your first night? 2) Was that YOU hiking on the super wide angle after the Buckskin pass? If so, that was a TON of backtracking for a spectacular looking shot.
It’s a bear canister. You are supposed to place it 100-200 feet from camp. I could have put it in the wide open, but the bush seemed more secure. 🤣. And no that is not me, but it’s someone I met and struck up a friendship with on the trail.
Curious as to how difficult you found this hike. Did you have trouble with the altitude? Any trouble finding a place to camp? How far did you go every day? My brother and i just did a similar distance on the Eagle Rock loop, but obviously with less elevation gain/loss and not at altitude. Would love to hear your thoughts on this trip. Lovely shots in your video.
The eagle rock loop is no cake walk. I underestimated it when I did it. This is not an easy hike but it’s not bad. Altitude seems to be what gets most people. Imagine doing all the peaks on the Athens Big Fork Trail EVERYDAY and at Altitude. That’s probably the best picture I can paint for you. I’ve never had an issue with altitude sickness but altitude does slow me down. I did not allow time to acclimate which is the best practice if you are coming from low elevation. Spend a few nights in town and let your red blood cells build up. I’ve known people who had to abandon this hike because the altitude got to them early. I did this hike over 4 days (one pass a day) only going about 7 Miles a day. I woke up early most mornings to get up and over the passes before noon to avoid thunderstorms. I barely made it the first day and had some intimidating lightning near by. I took it slow, stopped when I needed to catch my breath and slowly conquered each pass. It’s doable and well worth the effort. Hiking is 80-90% mental. If you believe you can do it you probably will. Hope this is helpful. Thanks for watching.

I wanted to get your advise. I'm planning on doing the 4 loop pass on July 11th. Planned on staring at the west maroon trailhead on the crested butte side and do a clockwise direction with doing a pass on each day. Which is 4 days and 3 nights. However, we are now concerned that due to snow I will not be able to get to the west maroon trailhead, so now I'm looking into staring at the Aspen side and take the bus or drive to the maroon bells trailhead. if we start there can we park our car in that location while we do the hike. I believe I have to get a permit so I have to look into that. But if we start there would it be doable to do the west maroon pass on the first day and camp right after which was our original plan.
You should definitely consider selling prints of the places you hike man! You clearly have a good eye for epic Vista and since you've already got the camera.... Why not make some money off those shots so I can hang them on my wall until I can take my own! How'd your tent hold up in the hail? My normally Hornet has yet to even see rain where I am!
I would consider selling prints. Are you interested or just making a suggestion? The tent seemed to hold up well in the hail. No problems just a little nerve racking. If it got any larger I was going to be concerned.

Planning a solo up there this July. I looked for the guide, but couldn't find one in your library? Big thing for me is if I can manage to get from Denver to one of the nearby towns via shuttle, then of course to/from the trailhead... Of course, a rental car is easiest and most flexible, but I'm being mindful of budget and willing to schlep it on a shared bus/van. Any insight there from anyone would be appreciated!
I’m not sure there is a shuttle from Denver to Aspen. It’s over 4.5 hour drive. Once you are in Aspen it’s easy to get around and even too the trailhead using public transportation.
I actually think you do a great job of narrating your hikes. This was excellent work as well, but when you don’t get the drone shots, it’s not quite as compelling imho. Great cinematography nonetheless.
Thank you. Sometimes I don’t know what to say other than. “We hiked here, got up the next day and hiked somewhere else.” And I kind of like letting the hike speak for itself. But I probably won’t do this every time. And I’m sorry to say I lost that drone to wind…so it may be awhile before I get anymore epic drone shots. 😬
It is pretty busy! I’m torn on bear safety. I have only seen bear tracks outside of Grizzly county and have never had my food messed with. But at the same time I feel bears need to be respected and bear safety taken seriously. Is it needed? Most the time probably not. But the few times it is…it’s best for the bears and the hikers.

It's a real shame how busy that area is. It's probably just me, but I don't think bear cannisters are really warranted in CO.
