    If the stator is still good you should go buy a lottery ticket. If it's working pull the left side cover and look for a plastic plug with 3 yellow wires. You must cut out that plug and solder the wires together. The plug melts and shorts out the wires, which burns up the stator. As for the carburetor's, you can make an intake from 1 inch PVC pipe and use a single air cooled VW carburetor. The engine will run better and get increased fuel mileage. There are lots of videos here on CZcams showing how to do it.
    You MUST replace the timing belts. They age out and if one breaks while the engine is running the engine will be destroyed.

      @@jpmcmotor6890 Yes, if you can't change the stator yourself the cost of paying a shop do it exceed the value of the motorcycle. The GL1000, GL1100, and GL1200 Goldwings had to be completely stripped and the engine removed from the frame to change out the Stator. Very time consuming and very expensive if you pay a shop to do that for you.

  • @retiredbutnotdead9929
    @retiredbutnotdead9929 Před rokem +8

    The 1200 line of goldwings were an improvement over the 1000 and 1100 models except when they got around 50K mile mark. Then the stator burns up and you have to pull the motor, remove the rear housing, install a new stator then hard solder it to the chassis “INFAMOUS” 3 yellow wires behind the left side cover. It is actually easier and a better fix to install an external alternator and do away with the stator altogether. Cam belts on this old girl were also a maintenance item they were generally replaced due to age of the belt and not by mileage. This is true of all of Hondas GL models. What amazes me with this video is the carbs didn’t need to be cleaned…..(a mutha to do). The full dress GL1200 were made to look pretty but when problems come up (and they did) it was a nightmare to fix. All of that plastic had to come off. Maintenance was not for the faint of heart. This guy got lucky just to get it to run. When the GL1200 ran, it was a wonderful tour bike, comfortable, predictable, and beautiful. It was capable of carrying a couple of heavy-weight people, loaded saddlebags and tow a trailer from Boston to Los Angeles and back without breaking a sweat.

    Sir - It's not running right nor will it. If sitting that long stop running it this way you're abusing the engine. I all but guarantee the carbs will need to be cleaned or rebuilt, pilot jets are going to be blocked. Revving the crap out it and seafoam won't fix anything. I agree timing belts should be replaced. Check for proper charging voltage at the battery. Low charging rate can indicate a wiring fault, inoperative regulator/rectifier, fried stator or combination thereof. Check the stator connector at the main harness they typically overheat/melt from corrosion & high resistance. Same issue can occur at the regulator/rectifier connector. If not already needed, you may have already killed the solid state regulator/rectifier cranking it on a battery charger. Check that the stator windings aren't shorted and test for proper stator AC voltage output on the 3 yellow wires. Ultimately change all fluids including rear diff, brakes, clutch & bleed. Highly likely the bike will need all brake masters & clutch master & slave rebuilt, same for brake calipers, due to brake fluid gone bad in these systems from years of being parked. Cooling system should be drained & flushed. New thermostat will likely be needed. These bikes are very robust & reliable but pardon me for saying you're going about it the wrong way.... I'm not a hater on your video, just an experienced tech rendering opinion and advice. Good luck & Take care.

  • @b-lopez394
    @b-lopez394 Před rokem +4

    Congrats! The Wing runs! A lot of the suggestion in the comment section makes your Honda Aspencade runs like real Honda again. The one that I disagree upon, is the soldering of the 3 yellow wires from the stator. Actually the melting of the connectors or loose connector saved your stator from burning. I think its an Engineering fault. If you remember, back in those years the speed limit is 55 MPH. With that said, the Wing never see a continues high RPM (above 80 MPH) driving. Above that, if all the charging sys are good and tight, the stator will overheat and self destruct because the regulator CANNOT regulate the self charging permanent magnet alternator. I think, I know what I'm talking about. I'm a retired automotive technician and I bought ( third owner) of a 1987 Honda Goldwing Aspencade. I had a good purchase of a good running Wing knowing the stator is bad and I know I can fix it. At first, I rode it with fully charges batteries and had a limited range(150 miles) by installing a dual battery. I didn't have a chance to pull the engine out to replace the stator. I finally replaced the stator and made all the connections solid. The charging sys was doing real good for at least 5 years until I road with my group going above 80 MPH for a long time. I found out the next day that it cranked slow. New battery and regulator was installed but found out the stator is not charging again. If your charging sys is still OK go ahead and fixed any loose charging sys wire connections. Just don't drive it over 80 MPH (cruise control regulated) for a long period otherwise you will be pulling the engine also. This happened to one of our group rider 86 Wing also. He adapted Geo Metro external alternator to fix it cause didn't want to pull the engine out. My carbureted '87 Wing is FOR SALE right now due to health problem and age (70). Its not in the Clist yet. Still have have the stator problem though but it runs good 6 months ago.

      Thanks for the details... I am sure other owners will find value in them! My 1st new motorcycle was an 86 1200, have owned more than 15 wings over the years, I have put staters in 1200s and alternators in 1500s. An officer in GWRRA for 22 years, I have seen it all. I have never seen a stater fail if the three yellow wires were properly spliced early in life. The 1500s alternator however is a different story, even mine failed. I got good at replacing them. Did one for a guy in a campground in 30 min with only the bikes factory tool kit... Come to think of it, the guy never even offered me a dollar for it.... lol

    • @spaceflight1019
      @spaceflight1019 Před rokem +2

      The root cause is the basic design of EVERY motorcycle's charging system. Without exception, they consist of a permanent magnet whirling around inside a coil assembly. The coil feeds a regulator. The regulator grounds the coil when its output voltage exceeds the limit. The heat caused by the ground will destroy the stator and the regulator. Cars don't have this problem because the voltage regulator controls the alternator field voltage.

    Wow. That thing is loaded down with about 100 pounds of junk. The 1200 Goldwing only had a 400 pound load capacity, and all that crap took up about 100 pounds of it. I never understood why so many owners turned their Goldwings into rolling junkyards. I see it has a trailer hitch on it, so it has obviously been abused. I would never try to start a Goldwing that has been sitting for a while without first pulling the plugs and soaking the cylinders in oil, change the oil and filter, and replacing the cam belts. if one breaks, the engine is toast. Goldwing engines are also prone to stuck valves after sitting for a while, and if a valve sticks open a piston is going to hit it. Always turn the engine over by hand first. I'd start by removing ALL the non stock junk. The fuel tank can be removed by removing the rear wheel and swingarm. DOT 3 is just fine, and is completely compatible with DOT 4. But it needs to be from a new, unopened container. The floorboards and heal and toe shifter should be removed and trashed, and replaced with the pegs and normal shifter it came with. Open the bleeder screw on the clutch master cylinder and let fluid dribble through it for a while. It's easy to gravity bleed. The primary seal on the plunger is probably bad. The HORRIBLE combined brake system can be converted to a normal brake system using parts from a late '90s Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 Classic. DO NOT use starting fluid. It is ether, and burns hot enough to burn holes in pistons. Use gasoline in a spray bottle. You're burning up the starter. Don't forget to check the coolant. Water pump seals are prone to fail on 4 cylinder Goldwings. That is not the stock exhaust. Goldwings only have one pipe on each side.

      I sold this recently and said in my ad that it needs restored, including brakes and timing belts. Some people think the belts are some fragile rubber piece that will fall apart after 15 years. That is not the case. Now it's true that they should be replaced, I have replaced many that were 20 plus years old and they were still fairly soft, not cracked, and in tact. I wouldn't roll down the highway at 75 mph all day with them but for storage and running the engine once in a while, they are fine. When your ready to start riding it again, new belts!

    So many people are in panic mode about the timing belt, it's a valid concern but I bought a 1992 ST1100 with 65K miles from a guy who had no idea about what maintenance had been done. The belt might have 500 miles or 65K miles on it, I don't know but I rode it 2000 miles round trip shortly after I bought it. I figure that trip alone was worth what I paid for it but it is still running like a champ with 70k miles.

    Sitting that amount of time it would be wise to re-run it in like a new engine. Keep under 60% power, that way you don’t snap a piston ring and destroy the bores, multiple heat cycles and slow power increase .

    • @GlennsSpeedShop

      Anything is better than nothing, remember these engine are flat, so getting oil to all parts of the cylinder may be impossible but something is better than nothing and if moisture got into them, it's on the bottom too. I suggest 2 stroke oil in the fuel and if you really care about it use an oil fogger. These are designed to use prior to long term parking.

Sorry for saying, but you could have done so much things way better and bring this beauty back to life for another 100.000 miles. Things don't repair by themselves. 1 piston is dead and rings need to be replaced. It is not that much of money and will give you the joy of the Goldwing. Please measure the pressure on every cilinder to find the bad one. Still give you a thumbs up, because I love goldwings.

      Thanks for the comment. If I was going to keep the bike, this would be a whole different video series. I was just doing a favor for a friend who was moving to get this out of his barn, get it cleaned up and running, and sell it to someone who would give it a second life. It made good video content and the guy that bought it was a happy camper. From my perspective, I am better off taking the couple thousand dollars this project bike made me and put it towards a better bike... But for now, I have no desire to ride again.
