He was a career criminal who had also beaten and robbed people. He had stabbed people before. Hurricane Carter was a career offender.

The physical evidence and eyewitness testimony against Hurricane and Artis was absolutely damming. That's why African American jurors found them both guilty in the retrial. The retrial went worse for Hurricane than the original trial did. The evidence against them was iron clad. It was an open and shut case because of how much physical evidence there was linking them to the murders.
