- Today we're pouring a Nudura ICF basement. I'm going to show you guys how to set up your string line to straighten the walls as you pour them. Let me know in the comments if this is how you guys do it or if you have a better or different method.

Timothy thanks bud. I try and keep things simple as I can. Ya me and the boys get the work done and try to have fun also. I find if you treat your guys good they will work much harder for ya. Also they know when we have to hustle because concrete is drying fast and I just change my tone of my. voice and they know. Lol.

Hey Bondo, I'm trying to decide between superior walls and ICFs. I wasn't impressed with ICFs until I started watching your channel. Its clear you think its the best way. Can you PLEASE do a nice long informative video comparing all different kinds of basement walls? It would get tons of hits. I cant seem to find a good (non-biased) resource on that. Just a bunch of builders saying that superior is the way to go (because its done in a couple hours and its easier for THEM). I know you used to do block, then there's normal poured walls, ICFs then superior walls. Thanks in advance brother

I used the nudura icfs for my house as well. Full basement and upper level. Icf to the roof line. I built it me and my dad built it and poured it.
I have infloor heat in basement and forced air in upstairs.
Built in 2004.
Very efficient.

Nudura is a great product but word is getting out and people are NOT HAPPY with them price gouging the public. They need to lower the price back to reasonable prices and not get greedy. Great video Ron đđđ

Hi Ned. đ we have never built ICF past the basement so I never have. I am a foundation builder so I switched from concrete blocks to ICF. Thanks for tghe feedback yes Its quitew alot of work making theses videos buddy. đ

LOVE THE TIPS. I GOT A QUETION ? YOU DID TALK ABOUT FILLING TWO COURSES FIRST THEN TO THE THREE QUARTER THEN STRAITEN. WHAT IS THE MIX OR SUMP AT AS IS IT DIFFERENT WITH EACH LEVEL OR WHAT THE TEMP IS? AFTERR I GET DONE WITH SCHOOL I WANT TO DO MY OWN HOME SO I AM IN LEARNING MODE.
I know you work a lot with newderrna blocks are they worth the extra cost over fox blocks. I plan to build in north east West Virginia in about a year and a half. Thanks for you educational videos.
Your welcome and I think if cost is quite a bit cheaper go with Fox. If the same price use Nudura. They both will work fine but Nudura is nicer to work with and a bit stronger to hold the concrete in without bulging a bit when we vibrate the walls.

Thanks. I keep them in about 1/2" Yes the bracing holds the wall in.
What size rebar do you use in the window lentils? Do you use prescriptive engineering or are your prints structurally engineered? Also feel like I've watch a couple videos where you move right into concrete. Upstate New York doesn't require any inspections?
When you are doing just a basement, do you usually trim the lugs off the top of the form, or can you trowel the concrete over the top lugs?
Hi. We just trowel to the top. It shows at the end of this video. If you leave lugs on top and bottom you will gain 2" in head room in basement.

We are solid masonry builders in New Zealand. Iâm pricing up some builds in this system but have never done it before . Could you help me out with some time frames ? I see you had a team of around 5 guys , how many days did it take to complete up to the stage on the video ? Iâm just trying to get a gauge on hours per build.

Hi there. Thanks for the comments. IT usually only takes me three days to put a medeum basement together. Thats after the floors are poured. Thats with three guys. I always grab extra guys for the pour day. đ

Is it possible to build the ICF on top of a slab? In my area the weather is mild but I want the other benefits of ICF. Can I bow the wall to the outside and bring it in straight with the jacks as the slab is in the way?
If your doing monoslab with ICF exterior walls can you put the bracing on the outside walls so you dont puncture the poly under the main slab.
Yes you can if there is room. we use 2-1/2â tap con screws they no where near the plastic.
Hey Bondo, I really appreciate your videos. My biggest complaint now in 2022 is the cost of building materials; ICF blocks are extremely over priced considering the technology and availability of raw products. I have no gripes with paying for skilled labor but materials in this modern age are outrageous.

Itâs a house foundation below grade with one foot of the wall above finished grade. Itâs a total of 7 courses of the nadura blocks. It has an attached garage. The overall length is 115â by 35â at the widest point. It has several juts in it also. Need any other info? Might that be able to be poured in one shot?
Clay there's no reason you can't pour that all at once. The only thing is that will take a lot of bracing. You brace about every 54" what i did was house first and then garage and stoops later. I backfiiled and compacted where the other footings t off the taller walls. That's going to be deep! You're going to have piles of fill like the rockies. Are you sure of where water table is?
I saw you didnt use horizontal braces in the windows n door? Is that what those scabs of ply are on the edges to grab a plastic web?
Yes exactly. We put some more lumber bracing in there also. Not sure itâs on video.

What kind of mix do you use when your pouring and what slump do you aim for. Guessing your vinrating with something as well
We usualy run 3500 lbs mix with pea stones. I like a 6" slump If you watch more of my videos u will see we always internally vibrate. đđ

How do you stay so calm when the mix is flowing? Iâve only done a little flat work with buddies over the years and I get stressed out! And itâs not even MY job.
I been pouring concrete for 30 years Jim. I just pick up the pace as needed. LOL Thgese walls are not as bad as a big floor in the hoit sun. That can make me nervous sometimes. đđ
Do you prefer the Nudura over other blocks?
I Am wondering why you do not use seal gasket on the windows and door sills? I know you need it on the top plate even if it is pressure treated wood.
Because the concrete is cast right to the wood so itâs not going to leak any air like the top would from little gaps. You can caulk the edge if you wanted too. đ

I'd heard that Nudura didn't recommend internal vibrating unless necessary. They suggest external vibrating only if at all possible, because of the possibility of bulging in the lower courses. I think the theory is that it's better to have minimal air from external vibrating than it is to take a chance on lower bulging. Did I hear that wrong or is there something to it?
Yes you heard that wrong.
Always vibrate, regardless of what anybody says. I am a retired structural engineer, and every time I was called out to foundation walls with honeycombing or concrete issues, turned out the placer never used a vibrator. Their standard claim was "I've been doing this for 25 years and never had a problem" After hearing their bs for countless of years I would reply, "If that's the case you've been doing it wrong for the last 25 years". Also, you don't want to run the vibrator too long in one spot, you can get aggregate segregation. Just give it a shot for couple of seconds when it is in one spot, or keep moving the vibrator up and down. Be careful not to get it caught in ties and rebar, sometimes they have to be cut free which does not make the rental guy happy, until he reads you the fine print in the rental contract. Guess who picks up the tab for a vibratorless vibrator. Cheers from Canada.

@@nasam789 the rebar schedule would be different for a taller wall that was to be backfilled with dirt vs a wall that was above grade. Nudura has a guide on there web sight as to different walls and rebar that is needed. Iâm usually doing a 9 foot basement so that is a aggressive rebar schedule but itâs good to have a little xtra strength.
Is Nudura stronger than blocks ?
Absolutely. Way stronger. I was a block mason for 20 years before I got into ICF.

@@howardjohnson3237 We generally do 6â walls. I have done some 8â and 10â as well where i wanted extra support. Nudura has a PDF on rebar placement for wall thickness as it relates to wall height and depth of backfill for a basement application. Its on there web sight.

have you ever looked at hollow core concrete beams and ICFs makes putting in a floor much easier and saves alot of money. I did it 7 years ago Wooden floor would have been $45,000, hollow core was $15,000 and completed in 3 hours.

Hollowcore runs about $20 a sq ft. That would be a 750 sq ft floor. You're saying a wood floor for 750 sq ft would run 45k? I call BS.
@@onjofilms The advantage is the labour cost, and at $40 a sheet your lumber is through the roof. PS also don't comment definatively on something you have no experience of I build a 4500 Sq foot building 4 years ago when lumber was cheap and still came out ahead
