I'm a crumb quilter myself. I'll use the smallest bits I can and have created some wonderful quilts. My challenge last year was to make a full quilt with nothing but scraps and recycled fabrics, including backing and batting. It turned out great!

Was it difficult to quilt? I quilt all of my tops with a domestic machine... it’s Juki, pretty powerful but will all the seam wonder if it makes it harder to quilt on a domestic machine.
@@mariatooker3475 It was not easy. It took more time than I ever have before. I used my domestic machine, it's a Janome Heart. I settled for long lines on the diagonal.

I use the calculater tape method to create long scrappy borders. I leave the paper on until zi am ready to use it to keep the fabric stable and only remove it after I have added the border to my quilt. I have also used the strips for quilt as you go blocks. I like that I can roll up the calculator tape stripped fabric until I am ready to use it. Instead of a huge pile of scraps in a container I have neat rolls all ready to use.

the purpose of using the tape is for storage of your little scrap pieces neatly, instead of just throwing them in a basket or bin. The strips of scraps can then be used in borders or blocks
yes, I use the paper to make strips of fabric, and cut the fabric close to the paper edges and keep the paper on til I use it!
I'm sure I get the same results without using the paper. Seems unnecessary, I don't have any problems with stability. I guess it depends what you're comfortable with?
I agree. The paper (or even most fabric foundations) are wholly unnecessary with this type/style of quilting
I agree. This project isn’t intricate enough to use paper. This is just crumb quilting. It’s unnecessary.
I've seen people string pieces together into a very long border type of thing. They use the paper to keep it relatively straight so that when they trim up they have a nice long crumb piece because they covered the straight strip of paper every time. These long strips look great. I'm not a lover of the very crazy smaller blocks, they are too busy for my taste but I'm sure they would look great with black sashing or in the right project.
I like using scrappy the best. It’s from all your scraps. I don’t use paper or fabric when sewing scrappies together. I use a small stitch. So far so good. I’ve been using these scrappy squares and rectangles to put together t-shirt quilts. You need a backing for t-shirts, to keep the fabric from stretching. I’ve made a 100% flannel one that I quilted to polar fleece. I drew circles on the fleece and quilted them with yarn. Love it.

I love sewing my smaller scraps or my wonky scraps to the calculator tape. It’s great for those days where I want to sew but not think too much. Pop on a movie and sew for a few hours. There’s so many uses for the scrappy strips.

@@JoanSews This time of year it’s all about the Hallmark movies 😆. I know how each one is going to end so it’s okay if I listen and don’t watch. I’ll also watch tv series like Monk, Sherlock Holmes, or something similar. Anything where I don’t have to keep changing the video or movie every 15 minutes.

The register tape is also used as a guideline for width. Make each piece as long as you want, then trim up the sides for even with the edges of the tape for universal width.

My grandma use to make crazy quilts. I’m making them but she used squares of old material instead of tape. I made then but use cheap muslin cut into squares and now it always make me think of her as I sew.❤
I love this method. I am currently doing a quilt as QAYG instead of doing boarders! 🙂 Love it and it’s a great way to use up your scraps!
Sewing 2 or three strips at the at the same time is time saving and works through the scraps faster.

crumb quilting, crazy quilting and string quilting are three similar but different things.
very informative ...Hey I like this way of making blocks....super kewl....I think the guy helping with the video may not quite get it.......but I do ...I went right ahead and made a few ...following ...lots of room for individuality also...I think sashing will be the way to go...full speed ahead ..so relaxing...I majored in art education...really enjoy abstractions...I play with that all the time..so this pleases me ..the excitement of seeing these blocks grow! Thank you for opening the door.

You don’t need the paper. If you want to make a very long strip like for a border for example, the paper would give a good guide for trimming.
I've been doing string quilts for years and use muslin as you use paper tape. I can use a tighter stitch that way. I just cut long stripes of muslin usually 4 inches wide and do a lattice string square.
will the muslin keep the pieced strip as stable

Using the paper would be nice to make a very scrappy border over time but I don’t see an advantage using it as foundation for crumb blocks. I could be wrong!

I am making a scrap quilt piece of fabric to cover a junk journal. I enjoy just sewing random pieces together. I never saw this paper method. Thanks for sharing. My struggle is when dealing with directional fabric. I find myself trying to make sure nothing is upside down.
That's a really great idea! I'd love to see your junk journal. Do you have any pictures? It is tough to keep track of the direction and it doesn't help that we are our own toughest critics!

Greetings from England, I didn’t buy tape, I used Amazon packing paper, cut to width. Worked perfectly.
I make illusion quilts with these kinds of blocks. I did 6.5 inch blocks.

Hi Joan I made one of your blocks and I sewed it on a like an old sheet and I did a 6 1/2 x 6 1/2 and I’m impressed how easy that was to do .I did have a little problem with my edges just coming together like the last couple pieces on there to cover them up I wanted to show you a picture of it but it won’t allow me to send one. Thanks for the tutorial.

I have bought 10 x 10 square foundation sheets and you just sew the scraps to that and cut the excess around the 10 in.² foundation piece and then pull that paper off or wash it. Someday I’ll do a quick with that.

It's actually used for strips in a border. Keep the paper on in a roll. Iron the whole roll an cut from the back along the edge of the paper. You have a neat and straight strip.
If you don't have a machine that automatically cuts the threads, you don't. Just turn it around and add more and more!

I never really understood using paper...
Its mostly for storing and the tape actually comes of really easy but yeah you dont need it if you want to but its easy to make the strip straight because if you make a long strip like one yard or longer it can become curved. Those longer pieces can be used as binding for quilts.

Thermal adding machine is toxic! It contains BPA and is hazardous in the environment as well. Make sure you are using plain adding machine paper.

Hi Jean! I'm so glad you enjoyed our video! The adding paper we use here is actually not sticky. It's just non-thermal machine adding paper that you sew the pieces onto. Then you can rip the paper off afterwards. I hope that helps! Thank you so much for watching!

You would keep the strips on them then turn it over and trim off edges to have pieced strips. Some people measure their tapes into 18 inches. Some keep the roll going and roll it back up into rolls.
I cut my muzzlen squares into 8-10 inch squares to make my string squares. That way I don't have to tear off any papers.
I've been doing those with my houseful of scraps. I'm making "new cloth" vs squares which I plan to use for a bag? Skirt? Something. I use the adding machine size for binding on quilts.

I've made 6 1/2 " blocks. Be sure to leave more than 1/4 " of fabric when you cut out your square because it will be lost in your seam allowance.

I've tried both ways... apparently, the thought is that ones Scraps could be cut on the bias,... so sewing onto paper, gives it stability... I just found it a pain to rip off all the paper...and then using my tweezers to get those tiny bits of paper out! It is not necessary... but kind of fun to sew on paper!

Less thread waste if you sew two blocks at a time; cut one off after starting the second one.

Good crumb quilting video, thanks, but the tape isn't necessary at all. I've sewn countless crumb quilts and my little pieces have never "flown around." So anyone just starting crumb quilting, just know that you can manage it simply without the additional cost or labor of messing with any register tape or paper. Happy sewing!
Paper dulls your beedle & adds another step whete u have to remove it. Use stabilzer or nothing at all

Tear the paper out before you quilt for the best result.
Can you use 8.5 by 11.5 to do Scrappy quilt with 2.5 ,1.5 ,2.0 To make-up a quilt pattern for your quilt
I made a queen scrappy and made LG blocks. I then cut them down to fit what ever block. I took my different size blocks and fitted them together. Very easy
I guess everything old is new again. I first used adding machine tape about 25 years ago - when it more available.
I’ve seen the paper rolls used in chevron Patterns or strips but not crumb or scrap blocks seems like a waste and an extra step you don’t need to do
