This could be me. I'm in my early 30s and feel absolutely stuck in my IT job. The dreams of just escaping somewhere, anywhere, are getting overwhelming. As you said "Inaka is healing", so I want to thank you for sharing your experience. I'll be here for the whole ride.

Early 30s here too and every year leading up to now it's been more and more difficult to ignore that sense of change, of looking for something even though I'm not sure what it is I'm looking for. It's distracting lol even at work I can't stop thinking of it.
Guess I just wanted to say that I feel stuck too.

I did it, quit my job and left the country and all that when i was about 29. It was a massive disruption and honestly it set my life back about 10 years and it wasn't the solution i thought it would be.
Things are ok now but if i could do it again I'd do it differently, just find a gradual transition rather than the 'drop it all and follow your dream' idea.

Try going on a long holiday, or find ways to change up your day to day life. I think when you’re in a rut a holiday to somewhere completely new resets you and gives you a bit of inspiration. It could even be another city in your home country you’ve never visited (doesn’t have to be expensive)

I love your filming style; it feels so personal and real in the sense that you aren't trying to glorify the content. I lived in Inaka for 6 years and ended up leaving due to our proximity to Fukushima Daiichi after the 2011 earthquake. I often wondered what it would be like if I could just pack up my bags and return which unfortunately isn't a possibility now. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with me.

This video made me cry. Thank you so much for sharing your journey and letting those of us who can't live our dreams live vicariously through you. I've wanted to visit Japan ever since I was a small child and I've always had a deep urge in my heart to live somewhere surrounded by nature. With my 29th birthday on the horizon, that longing grows ever stronger. Unfortunately due to chronic illness, I'm instead stuck living in the house that I've grown up in, deep in the city. It's still hard to accept that this is my lot in life, but channels like yours help me dream.

I think this is what so many of us are realizing. We need to be in touch with ourselves, to be able to live in a rhythm that suits us, not to be in competition with each other or ourselves. Not many of us are lucky enough to find this out in our youth, carried away by the pressures of living, family, work and society. I understood it finally after quitting my job to devote time to my artistic pursuits. I am lucky that my expenses were not huge and I am happy with simple things, but even then…… here I am in my 60’s now and really enjoy a few days at home, snowed in, resisting , very easily, much of the modern and new things people around me have. If what I have works then I am content. Good for you! I look forward to watching your channel.

I subscribed very quickly because I feel a kindred spirit in you. My situation is different in that I had a 3d techie desk job for years, bought property but stayed in the US. I changed my lifestyle. Quit my job. Now I’m a massage therapist. Such a 360. But my rural land encourages me to slow down and appreciate and see things differently.
I find myself inspired by those that have, or are remaking their lives. It feels good to see so many people rejecting a way of life that really isn’t healthy. And I love seeing different rural areas of the world.
I would love to hear your story of how you stumbled into owning this house.
I would love to see interviews of your neighbors and friends there. Like what they thought of you moving there, a foreigner.
How much Japanese do you know, or just your journey of learning the language and customs.
What are your favorite elements of your house and the building techniques they use. I’m fascinated by the boards under the tatami mats for example. How they are not nailed down. So different from western construction.
I suppose I have an affinity for Shikoku, because I plan on hiking the 88 temples there someday. So I was so happy to hear that’s where this is.
I just really love the videos and eagerly await more!

Congrats you’ve been successfully rediscovering yourself!

A few months ago, I started watching CZcams vids of foreigners living in JPN (especially the countryside) after I bumped into a vid of a German architect, who has been renovating “kominka” (old abandoned houses) in an isolated/dying village in Niigata.

The more I watch those vids, the more I get convinced that skilled migrants with good brains and hearts are becoming valuable assets to JPN (more so than the average Japanese). So, it’s a 2 way street : while JPN may have helped you, you may well be helping JPN.

She met her husband who was a NZ soldier based there in the 50’s and moved to New Zealand and had a family. My husband has been there to visit, a long time ago now, to meet his cousins but sadly have lost touch. My daughter has been learning Japanese for several years and wants to move there and teach but also find the relatives. We hope to visit someday and try and reconnect with the Nakayama family.

It must be more expensive to do it this way but you still have that intention. As a black woman, I’m not sure what reception I would get in such a rural area but these areas are the most attractive to me, rather than Tokyo. Although I’d like to go there too. Thank you for Sharing Bitsii (I really hope that is a name reference, as I understand that "inaka" translates as "rural"). Boomer TLDR incoming!
Where to start... or unpack my thoughts on your extremely reflective meditative video? First off, watching this, I feel stress vacating my body.... As someone much older than you, almost every thought you have shared in this video, I have experienced, am experiencing, and hope to experience before I close my eyes for the last time. I think the COVID pandemic did quite a bit of harm to everyone, as I have felt detached from community and more insular, less social, longing for quiet solitude where I can hear my own thoughts without being constantly bombarded by the hype associated with the world. I am an older parent and my daughter just started college, so I feel responsible to be a booster rocket for her as I try to push her further in life to find her own success. As a result, I'm trying to do two things with her. The first is to prepare her for life, the "game" she will need to play, and provide her with as much of my practical knowledge as possible. The second is to have her NOT follow my path to success, where you always sacrifice those things you have shared with us in this video (it's a work in progress for me).
As I have done that, I have been more reflective of the idea that your inner connections and roots matter. I'm not talking about what career you have or what skills you've obtained...I'm talking about who you are and what you feel. There may be a point in time where you live back in the City (Tokyo has a lot of hustle and bustle), but I too will one day explore the expat life as a retiree and I realize that when I do so, I can be nomadic, though it would be nice to have that solitude to come back to.
I've had this talk with my daughter as there must be some point in life where i can put down my sometimes overwhelming backpack of responsibilities and live life to enjoy. Watching a younger person such as yourself is a step in the right direction for me, so please allow me to live a bit vicariously through your journey. Thank you for allowing me to shed a few layers of stuff that doesn't define me and enjoy some clarity with the sound of my own heart!

I just found your channel. Thank you so much for sharing your story. I feel like I’ve been hitting my low point here in Japan after several years of dedicating myself to my career. It’s wonderful seeing someone who took the leap and made it on the other side. I too hope to strive and give it my best.

this is just amazing, such a short and simple footage yet the story and emotion was so elaborated. Everyone in it just seems like a familiar character to me. Best wishes to you.

What a lovely video. I wish you all the best! Can't wait to see more about your life and progress. ( that spider really scared me! I let out a yelp lol - I hear Japan has a lot of big ones..but I know they are a good part of nature...)

This is such a beautiful video. Thank you for telling your story and for showing such love and appreciation for the history and culture of your new home. I love old buildings and old traditions and it breaks my heart when things are lost. The respect you show for the former owner of your new home is so touching. I'm so glad you're there renovating so this lovely house can be preserved and enjoy a new life.

I'm just 26 and still working on getting my degree. Lately I've been thinking that I'd be better off living the simple slow life, but I don't want to leave my current life behind just yet. Thank you for sharing your experience. Your courage gives me hope.
