  • Denon DJ's new SC LIVE 2 and SC LIVE 4 are the company's latest standalone, all-in-one devices. With new streaming options and built-in speakers, Denon seems to be taking the brand in a different direction compared to the older PRIME series hardware. On this episode of "Beatsource Tech," Mojaxx puts the SC LIVE 4 under the microscope and tries to work out who it's aimed at.

    AN IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM MOJAXX: Today, the day after the launch, Denon DJ have announced ‘corrected’ pricing for both units.
    SC LIVE 2: $1099
    SC LIVE 4: $1299
    So keep that in mind when you watch the video. At those prices I’d say they are MUCH more competitive with the rest of Denon DJ’s products, and I’m much happier to recommend the 4 (as that’s the only one I’ve used).

    Fantastic overview with some great points as always Mojaxx. I fully agree with your point as to where does it fit in. When I read about it first and saw the price I was thinking why wouldn't you just hang on and go Prime 4 which is a beast of a controller. If this was priced around the €1000 euro mark it would make sense exactly as you said and it would put a lot of pressure on Pioneer in that price range of products.

    I love my Prime 4, from the moment I first got it out of the box and set it up right to now, 2 years later, the thing still amazes me how good it is, and with a prime Go for back up, perfect for everywhere I dj, Bar, Club & Twitch... I have for the last 2 years use the Prime 4 exclusively standalone but am tempted to use it with Serato for STEMS. I was kinda hoping Denon was going to release the SC Live Line up with Hardware support for STEMs / Serato like the New Rane appears to have, considering INMusic own both brands, that could have been just what the SC4 needed to make me consider buying one...

  • @KevinBasher
    @KevinBasher Před rokem +8

    The Prime 4 (if available) goes for 2499€ in Europe. The SC Live 4 is priced at 1598€. I'd say that's more than enough of a difference to justify the SC Live 4's price. As to who the unit is for: I'd say it's aimed at a very broad range of home users. Lots of great features, and a more "industry standard" approach to the fx section - which many will prefer. The speakers are the only decision I don't get. But the unit is kind of a steal for what it does. Also, try to find a 4ch standalone, or a competing 2ch standalone that you can purchase right now. Availability is key in these times!

    I’m a pioneer user but have been converted to Denon. I’ve realised that pioneer seem to have remained dominant because DJs like familiarity and the innovation of the prime series is a huge change.
    Seems like Denon are reigning it in and are aiming for an approach like an updated XDJ unit than a Denon unit, which could bridge the gap between pioneer users and Denon gear.
    To me though, it seems a bit rough around the edges, it misses the polish that both pioneer and prime units have. Great that there’s a 4 channel standalone at a decent price, but I do think they’ve missed the mark with this a bit

    Don't really get the hate in the comments here. These controllers will do the job , have 100mm pitch faders and are what I'd recommend to any serious beginner dj. There are already far too many controllers without 100mm pitch faders. They are built to a budget, if you want better then get the Prime 4. 12v dc is actually handy for portability too. I'm actually considering the sc live 2 just for backup/portable decks.

      Far more than just "serious" beginner DJs. I do the job for 10+ years now and got a Live 4 to have an portable, yet powerful setup with integrated speakers and 12V powerbank compatibility. The LEDs in my Anubis DJ mask also benefit from SoundSwitch. Killer device.

      @@Skaratakhow do you feel about the poor crossfader on sc live 4? There’s a lot of travel before you actually hear the music and this is a big problem for people that like to cut and scratch.
      Myself included. I think I could get used to it but I’ve just heard so many bad things about this device and it’s off putting
      1 can’t connect turntables
      2 travel on crossfader
      3 scratchy is apparently bad on this device
      4 jog wheel feels bad to lots
      5 plastic cheap build
      6 Too high price for what it is
      7 people report of sound bleed. Say you playing song on deck 1 and are getting a song ready to mix in deck 2, even though the crossfader is all the way over to the left, you can hear the other song slightly and 1 guy said this happened after 1 month and 25 hours. I guess around 1 hour per day. This really worries me.
      Amazon did say I can buy and return if unhappy but I’d feel a certain way about opening an item that’s £1000 using and sending back because I don’t like the quality.
      I know I shouldn’t feel this way but I’d feel bad to send back because it can’t get sold as brand new or they clean and resell and someone is unhappy because there’s a fingerprint and they can tell it’s been used. 😂

    Great video and review Mojaxx! You pose a great question about the Denon SC Live series of controllers ; what target market is this for? IMO as DJs have transformed from the pandemic there is a new hybrid niche of performance DJs from bedroom and direct to venue. Is the series to get you from starting out to a festival or club? Is there a niche market of such? Only time will tell. But I can tell you there’s a lot of DJs online more than out at venues. Just my 2 cents.

    It is somewhat disappointing with the areas you highlighted Mojax, as the limited responses from the pads is a deal breaker for me, I use the sc6000s love the pads bought a mixstream pro for my son, and the pads are far less responsive he wouldn't know the difference (and yes the mixstream is a far cheaper device so the quality was not expected to be the same) i was hoping the sc4 would have had simmiler pads to the sc6000, I may have missed it but can you connect the lc6000s to the sc4? If not that is another deal breaker for me. Not fussed about Amazon music service but does seem odd in terms of how it currently functions.
    I do prefer the layout of the sc live 4 to the prime 4 mainly due to it being a simmilar layout to the x1850 mixer. i hope the new prime 4 replacement has the same layout as the sc live 4 but just with the additional connections the prime 4 has. I think Denon was like we need to put some new stuff out there and this was the best they could do for the moment. I was tempted to get one but at present based on your review I may just hold of to see if the pad response can be improved and if the lc600s can be used with it.

    Meh, I really like the mixer's FX section got right, like it's really a bottleneck for a lot of DJs who're used play on my Prime 2, but the rest of the device looks like a toy from the lower shelves.
    I'm still waiting for an upgraded Prime 4 or something similar with good connectivity and compatibility.
    Heck i would even switch to Pioneer if they would implement features like Ableton Link to their mixers and or standalone devices. (I'm a big fan of using custom loops and drum fills from ableton and utilizing the Ableton Push 2 on stage)

    The question I have is who exactly are these targeted towards? Most of these features (sans Amazon Music) are already available on the $600 Numark Mixstream Pro and that’s barely a year old. Not trying to sound like a hater as I own a Prime system but Denon dropped the ball.

    Thanks for the review Mojaxx. I really don't know what Denon was thinking when they released these 2 toys. I said that because they are far from pro DJ gear. In addition, they discontinued the Prime 2. Why? When Pioneer discontinued the RX2 and kept the RR, I was floored. No one is buying the XDJ RR!! Nobody!!! I know they are trying to add a new market but not this way. If I was looking for Denon gear, I would have thought of the Prime 2, Prime GO or the Numark Mixstream Pro. I was looking for a standalone but now, I will just wait, save and get the DDJ 1000. I have the DDJ 800 and it run circles around both SC Live 2 and 4.

    and why the prime 2 has been discontinued ?
    way more connectivity options than this SC serie and also more than the prime go.

      @BlueHawk80 Před rokem +1

      "Way more connectivity" sorry what?

      @francescodamico7903 Před rokem

      Actually i was comparing sc live 2 vs prime 2 (and ther's no match at all). But if you compare it with the live 4 you loose 1 mic in (and mic eEQs), cue on aux in, 1 usb port, 1 ethernet port. Just with a quick view.
      That said i am a novice, i come from a sc-s4dj Stanton and i'm thinking of an upgrade to my dj geear (actually i am a pro guitarist).
      I was wondering what to choose between prime go and prime 2 and ... i just choose the the prime 2 ... and it's discontinued. Do you think it would be, because of that, a bad choice? Or could work fine? Could upgrade with next engine firmware still?
      I also own a Akai force and tought to link the two for more dj options ... but without ethernet it would be maybe less stable as connection (in a closed environement full of cell phones i'm scared that wifi connection could fall as it happens with my behringer xr18 mixer .. :-/
