Barnard is technically called Barnard College of Columbia University, so yes it is one of the 4 undergraduate schools (like CC, GS, and SEAS) of Columbia University. All of the Barnard students can take any Columbia undergraduate course (many are in my Columbia classes) and play on the Columbia sports teams. Harvard used to have a similar women’s college called Radcliffe which was affiliated with them. Harvard and Radcliffe later integrated and gave out an additional Harvard diploma to the Radcliffe graduates from prior years.

I honestly have just told everyone at my school that I want to go to Columbia and elaborate if they seem interested...I go to a small public school in texas and sometimes I still have to explain what Columbia is....😬

But if you have a different admission process and requirement, how can you say you go to Columbia Uni when its requirement is so much more demanding than Barnard college? In addition, Barnard College accepts women and trans only which clearly affects the requirement to get in.
Do you really think the average requirement of a Barnard College student accepted in Columbia University? And no, taking classes at a university does not mean you are going to that University. We are talking about the initial conditions of getting into Columbia and Barnard.

hello! It would be similar to going to Cornell University where there are 8 undergraduate colleges, each with their own admission committees and different acceptance rates... not much of a difference between Columbia University which has four undergraduate colleges (including Barnard) with different admission committees and acceptance rates ...

@@mjdandnyc3193 Thanks for clarifying the issue with a good example. But do you think using that process does indeed categorizing students? Because if the initial conditions are different, some colleges would be more demanding than others which require better students. Consequently, some will say only students who get into Columbia College using more challenging requirements are somewhat rightful to call themselves students from Columbia University. What do you think about this topic? I do notice students of both places do not really care (some do), but for an outsider (employers may question), some will think this way.
If we really want to distinguish the quality of the students (using only initial conditions as the indicator), hypothetically, the admission should be the same in all bodies of Columbia University. In my opinion, based on initial conditions, we can only say Barnard College has an easier way in than other bodies at CU.

Graduated Barnard in the 90s and this overarching question has haunted us forever. Bottom line is Barnard woman really don't care. We are a college of Columbia University's, that refused to merge with the other college when they decided to accept women. Furthermore we are a haven for empowered women (and those who want to truly be an environment where gender boundaries are not even recognized). Love your channel. Hoping my daughter gets in since admission has become quite low.

@@mjdandnyc3193Except that it’s not the same lol. Like, no diss on Barnard it’s a great college but it’s not the same as the other 3 schools at columbia. The other 3 schools are all sorted by major, ie what students want to study. There’s a liberal arts school, a general studies school, and an engineering school. Barnard isn’t distinguished in the same way. It actually offers the SAME majors that students would otherwise take in, for example, columbia college, just like a separate entity.
Barnard also has a completely different admissions committee and looks at a completely different applicant pool. All the 3 undergraduate schools of columbia pull from the same pool of applicants, separate from columbia. Columbia admits students to the college holistically, and does not admit by major per se the way state schools do.
Barnard also has a completely different application than columbia, unlike the other 3 schools of columbia.
And finally, Columbia clarifies this question for us on their own website where they state “The University offers an outstanding and comprehensive array of academic programs. These include three undergraduate schools, fifteen graduate and professional schools, a world-renowned medical center, four affiliated colleges and seminaries, twenty-five libraries, and more than one hundred research centers and institutes.” Not 4 undergraduate schools. Barnard is an affiliated college. A separate college that is affiliated with columbia very heavily.
If you attend Wellesley you can take classes at Harvard, but saying you went to harvard when you went to Wellesley isn’t really accurate.
