  • Justin owns the ONLY Proton Saga Iswara in Australia. But how did it get there?
    The original owner bought it from Philog Garage in Wales in 1993.
    In 1997 it was imported into Brisbane Australia.
    In 2009, Justin saw the car for sale for a mere £2999 AUD and HAD to have it.
    Justin reached out to me and shared his Proton, I wanted to share it with you!
    Proton didn't enter the Australian market until 1995 with the Proton Wira, meaning that the Saga Iswara was overlooked

    We didn't get Protons over here in Australia until 1995, the first one being the Wira (based on the CC Lancer). A couple of years later it was rebadged as the Persona. We also got a couple of "hot" Protons, the M21 Coupe (which I've never seen irl) and the Satria GTI (which I drove once and was very impressed... good luck finding one now though).

      I think i did cover the fact they didnt enter AUS until 1995 but great to hear about the 'hot' Protons :)

    Fantastic find. That Saga Iswara is a very well preserved example, I wonder if the A/C came with the car in 1993 or did it get fitted later? Lots of UK import Jaguars, Porsches and Mercedes come here but I did once see a 1996 Vauxhall Vectra 1.8 for sale (we only got Holden Vectras in 1997) and a 1995 BMW 525tds manual (there are a few manual 5s here since you couldn't get a manual 5 after 1995). For the Saga Iswara to have come here, the owner would have gone through an approval process and it would have had a compliance plate (to state that the vehicle conforms to Australian emissions and safety laws) plus shipping and import fees. It would have been approved as the vehicle would have been owned for at least 12 months by the owner importing it.

      Looking at the fitment id suggest it was fitted in the UK and specified as an extra from the garage :)

    As a Malaysian my self..today it's so hard to find even in Malaysia in that pristine condition...even if u can find it in this condition the seller here in Malaysia usually wud sell it with stupid amount of price..too bad today its not a drit cheap car anymore when it fully restored.

    Those hubcaps were also used on the Malaysian market Saga Iswaras on top trim guise (as the 1.5i), and judging by those font used it is the correct one, albeit for the Malaysian market, as they seem to have kept a different font for the UK ones than what we get here.

      From speaking recently with the owner he does still have the UK spec ones :)

    Only way there’d be another over here is if someone else privately imported one. We didn’t even get that body style here as a Lancer, even though Mitsubishi were selling cars here under their own brand, they were mostly selling Triton Utes (sold as L200s in the UK) and the locally made Magnas and Colts. I’d hate to see how difficult it is for Justin to get parts for it when they need replacing. I’m betting it’s a costly and time-consuming exercise.

    I have no idea why I never had one. I bought a SEAT Marbella new in October 1992 because I wanted a car to rely on driving to my girlfriend (now wife) when I lived in Manchester and she lived in Bournemouth. It was between the Marbella and a Lada ??? (WHY?? ) Funnily enough when we moved to Christchurch down the road from Bournemouth up the nearby hill in Southbourne was a Proton dealer which was a couple of times the seller of the largest number of Protons in the UK - The area must have been awash with used examples owned by recently deceased elderly drivers with low mileages......... how did I miss them ????

    there was a new 2008 Saga that was sold in australia (dubbed the S16) which is more related to the Savvy. but the Saga Iswara, probably the only one down there

      @ayrproductions Před 9 měsíci

      That Saga was literally just a Savvy in sedan form. Proton has never been successful in Australia, apart from the Satria GTi which even had a one-make racing series.

    Great Justin has saved & preserved this car, incredible the original owner bothered to ship it to Oz. The dash carpet must be an Oz / NZ thing, I know NZ do them for the mk1 mx5, which I am looking out for

      Dash mats are pretty vital in the Australian climate otherwise you end up with a dash that cracks like mad, especially if you park outside a lot.
