  • The Fight Nerd spoke with Dan 'The Beast' Severn, who just recently released his autobiography co-written by Ian Douglass, "The Realest Guy In The Room." The book covers Dan's life growing up on a farm, finding wrestling and becoming one of the top US competitors, and what happened that led him into his acclaimed career in MMA and professional wrestling.
In this part of our interview, Dan talks about his run in the WWF and the infamous debacle known as the Brawl For All. This event saw pro wrestlers competing in a tough man competition with the winner getting a nice payday and a Wrestlemania bout against Butterbean. Severn tells us the story about its origins and why he was initially not permitted to be a part of it, and why it did not work as well as it could have.

I've always wanted to know how The Beast sounded underwater.

It would have been interesting to hear Mr Severn's opinion on the Brawl For All. Unfortunately you can't hear a damn thing he says!

Unintelligible interview. In his book Severn tells the whole story. They told him he and Shamrock were barred from Brawl For All, then the night of they offered him $5k to fight Godfather. Severn did not want to wear the gloves, as it was not a boxing match, but was forced to. He was told that takedowns and holds scored points, and treated it as such, while the commentators during the broadcast made it clear that only punches and takedowns mattered. Basically it was a boxing match where you could tackle the other guy but grappling meant nothing. They should have just eliminated the takedowns altogether and called it a boxing match. Anyway, the WWF barred Severn from advancing, but told on the air that he had withdrawn himself, so they advanced Godfather even though he had lost. Severn's belief is that they wanted Steve Williams to win the tournament as part of his big push and didn't want him to risk him losing to Severn. It ended up not mattering anyway since Bart Gunn knocked Williams out. Then instead of using his Brawl For All win as a push for Bart they buried him by putting him up against a legitimate boxing champion in a shoot match, which they must've known he couldn't possibly win.
