  • Here is the original version of the documentary Casale directed by Roland Paret in 2004 with the support of Fanal Productions. Casale is a small village of western Haiti where live to this day the descendants of Polish soldiers who came with Napoleon's army to fight the rebellion of former slaves. After most of them deserted, they acquired after independence the Haitian citizenship and they settled there to never return home.

You're just ignorant. Look up the etymology of Slavic. It has nothing to do with "sounding like Slave". That's the origin of the world cuz Slavics were enslaved for so long the name came from that.

Iam glad that you are seeing and learning for your own self about the Haitian people.
Because the propaganda that the superpowers of that time published to the world about Haiti.
Was that . We were savages and killed all the white folks on the island. ( greatest lies )
We fought everyone who conspired to keep us enslaved.
      Black and white .
And as you can find out those great polish people and the Syrians there had nothing to worry about as the evidence shows their lineage continues on the island.

The Polish Legion was used in Haiti as "cannon fodder" by Napoleon, who wanted to find a way to get rid of them, as there was unease in their ranks in France due to harsh duties and lack of payments owed as well as many of them being sympathetic towards the Jacobins. Whilst in Haiti they were poorly outfitted and armed, given onerous or odious duties and poorly paid. The Haitians made overtures to several of the mercenary troops especially the Poles, Swiss and Germans as many were from the lowest classes or forcibly conscripted, and many defected to the rebels' side.

I don't know why there are haters commenting in a hard line, nonsensical manner. Much has been written on the subject and there are many sources. Let the Polish be proud. Let the Polish-Haitian descendants be proud. One must read about the plight of the Polish before the Haitian revolution to understand what really happened with the Polish and why Dessalines protected them in Article 13 of the Haitian Constitution. The poorer soldiers escaped into the mountains and Casale and were more isolated. Those closer to Dessalines were more privileged and less isolated. Dessalines new their history and of their being unwilling and forced to fight, and he sympathised with them because he had to make tough choices and defect, changed sides also. At one time Dessalines was in the French army against the Spaniards and English. Dessalines did a lot of the killing for the French and was praised as the butcher of the blacks in a letter from Leclerc to Napoleon.

The story is very true. Francois Duvalier and his Tonton Macoute army did not like people with fair skin. There is documentary called les Vèpres de Jéremie where Duvalier ordered the hunting of light skinned men--particularly in Jeremie. The operation took place mostly at night where army of men drove in the remote areas to hunt light skin men. They called them Kamokin--don't know what that means, but a Kamokin was also an anti Duvalierist.

Unfortunately Duvalier was a colorist. You also have to remember that in Duvalier's time(it still exits a little bit now) there were many people light skinned people who were colorist against dark skinned people. Still I agree that light skinned people and dark skinned people are both black and we should co-exist and put all the colorist nonsense aside.

Eurasians like in some russian republics are not "yellow" people like chinese. They are multiethnic.
And afroeuropeans so to say, are also not "black" but multiethnic.
There is nothing bad about that, its only a problem within a racist context.
And besides that. Its only an american united states phenomen to perceive mixed race as black. The reason for that was that the notion became a notion of class, not of ethnicity.
Because fact is that in the united states everyone with even little african roots was seen as a slave in the south.
While opposite to that, in haiti the mixed race sons of the planter aristocracy followed into the footsteps of their fathers. A large portion of the wealthy creoles in haiti where mixed race people. Similar to the united states southern aristiocracy there were large oppulent ball events during the season but other than in the US of course, mixed race ladies and white french ladies competed on who organized the most glamourous ball event, and of course in a friendly manner.
And in France, black people or mixed people were called "americans".
And some historians say that in brazil in the early times many second and third generation planter aristocrats were of mixed african, portuguese and native ancestry.

My family fled Jérémie. We're mostly light and fair skinned, and I often wondered if our fleeing may have had something to do with it. When I ask questions about it, my mum gets rather annoyed and she really doesn't offer any details.

I have the right to expose those who trying lessen my ancestor's braveness for they own gain. did you know that the Polish mercenaries were a legion of 5000 when they got to haiti, and it was after they had lost 4500 of they legion they realize surrendered was they only choice. so I should go with your lie right. the Polish treated the slave's no different than the french. read before you start cussing other people for telling the truth. did you really think they would of done this for us haitian's.

@@josephlindor3708 The true like always is on the middle. Poles were sent to haiti because Napoleon wanted to get rid off them. He signed a peace with Austria. Some poles joined french before because they hoped that he would invade poland which was occupied by russia, prussia and russia. After the treaty of peace they were useless for him. Later the war in europe started again and was up to 1 mln poles with Napoleon. In Haiti what you said is true but you forgot about the poles who deserted to haitian side before. Many individuals did it. Poles were against slavery. In Usa the polish general Kosciuszko helped americans with independence .He got as a price huge property and slaves. He liberated them ,dumbed the citizenship and went back to poland to fight for freedom. Poles had on the flags written: For our and yours freedom. There were poles fighting with haitians against french. The whole revolution was succesful because british supplied plenty of arms and blocked the island and deseases of course.
