Nah it wasn't LOL Pharrell wanted too much spotlight back then...he could've gave some tracks up to others to rock but I don't blame him. Only get one life to live lol
It’s a happy accident that Pharrell did this track the way he did because as much as I can hear the great Michael Jackson killing this, Pharrell’s tones are special in their own right.
Life-changing fr. When I first heard "Can I Have Like That" in '06, I was FLOORED. In My Mind is simply one of those records that gets better with time.
You have a good ear, i hear a slowed down version of Patrice Rushen- Keeping the Faith in Love, listen to the chord progressions, i slowed down the playback, its eerily similar. But theres nothing wrong with being inspired. pharrell has a pretty eclectic musical lineage that he draws from, such as Q-Tip (his favorite producer) Roy Ayres (why his son Rocket’s middle name is Ayre) as well as Stevie and other soul artists. And then next in the lineage is his unexpected protege and apprentice, Tyler, the Creator. He draws from Pharrell and Chad (the Neptunes) for inspiration, as well as Stevie, Erykah, and a lot of jazz musicians. The dna in music theory is deep.
@@Gr33dyGenius85 I don't think I've heard that song by Patrice Rushen. I'll have to check it out. I can tell by your thorough commentary you ain't new tuh dis! You were droppin fax no 🖨. Since you mentioned Pharrell's producer inspo (Q-Tip), another lil fun fact you may or may not already know, he also learned from Teddy Riley (of the singing group Guy and Pharrell's mentor) and his COUSIN Tim Mosley...as in Timbaland! I was flabbergasted when I found that out years ago, but at the same time it made perfect sense. Pharrell showcases his musical influences in all of the music he produces. Tyler the Creator is the same way. Whenever I listen to Tyler, the impact Pharrell/The Neptunes/N.E.R.D. has had on him as an artist/producer is obvious. Last thing, the Neptunes are HIT.MAKERS. Chad and Pharrell are one helluva duo! This is my other account by the way😁
I Wish Pharrell Would've Gave This Song To Lloyd Or Michael Jackson.... They Would've Killed This! I Like Pharrell's Falsetto But I Just Could Hear Them Two Making This Song A Smash!!!!!?
Why does this song make your heart feel heavy with joy??? Its so freaking good, you could literally bawl tears. I LOVE YOU PHARRELL!! "I really like you boooooooyy!" lol!
Michael Jackson would kill that beat! Remind me the song from MJ with Paul Mc Cartney btw. Pharrell was really in the future when I realize! #2009to2019
It’s crazy how the culture ignored this album just because he can rap, sing and make his own beats. Then undermined his talent by boxing Skateboard P into the cultures own interest, instead of appreciating his contributions, idk....This is one of my all time favorite albums tho and then I stop listening and I just vocalist it’s their not doing more for themselves but demanding all the attention, idk....
Honestly, and I feel qualified to say this because I co-wrote and composed a Grammy winning album, and THE NEPTUNES(not just Pharrell because Chad Hugo is insanely talented on his own as well, listen to Kenna) Pharrell hears Stevie, Mike, Prince, sting and the police, and he tries to recreate, but it never comes out exactly how you would expect. He kind of has the ability to closely replicate songs and that comes with time and experience, because I hear that girl by Stevie Wonder. Why do you think Marvin Gaye’s estate sued him? But Pharrell should have not lost that case. Sampling I completely understand, but if Marvin Gaye was alive he’d definitely spot out what’s different and would understand that Pharrell is one of the last composers we have who truly studied music. I was a jazz artist for years(6th grade through 11th, yeah just because you never heard of them doesn’t mean they don’t exist), before I crossed over into mainstream. I remember doing shows at Duke University and studying miles Davis and bossa nova’s. Miles was crazy got his advance and bought a yellow Lamborghini and painted his walls black. At least Pharrell is approachable. Miles Davis would snarl at his fans, literally incomprehensible growling.
In My Mind is such an underrated album.
Agreed Pogba
hereistand2008 Agreed
hereistand2008 I didn't sleep on it, I bought when it came out in 2006.
hereistand2008 I still do!

Best producer of all time hands down, this dude has been in the game for a very long time
I agree
YOU GOT THAT RIGHT.
Frfr
I second that. Gotta add Chad tho, he is the other half of the Neptunes afterall
It’s a happy accident that Pharrell did this track the way he did because as much as I can hear the great Michael Jackson killing this, Pharrell’s tones are special in their own right.
The instrumental was inspired by Stevie Wonder - That Girl. Which also led Pharrell to decide to toss in some harmonica.
A happy accident I see what you did there. Glad people know about this hidden track now.
It would have been very Kool if the Pharrell/Neptunes would have done some thing with Michael Jackson that would have been Huge !
@@suavelleadams5097 He brought the track Frontin to Michael Jackson and Prince. They both turned it down so he sang it himself and added Jay Z
I thought about Al. B sure with this one…. Am I way off?
This entire album was so ahead of it's time. It changed my life at 14 and now im 28. I miss those days so much❤
Same

I’m 26! I agree w everything you said 😭
Has to be my favorite song on the album but it's hidden behind that other song with Jay-Z
I hear Stevie Wonder's "That Girl", but I'm also getting a slowed version of "I Feel For You" Prince/Chaka Kahn vibes.
Yeah that's exactly what i thought! Love this song!
