  • I am so looking forward to 2023 and all the new projects I have instore, even the ones I know nothing about yet. Today we start with just a few shares then I show the start of the first repairs on Pearl, the power control handles, cleaned up and why there was failure's or was there? The evidence shown proved even the person doing the past repairs had little faith in his own work.

    Keith I really am enjoying you taking us on the restoration of your lathe. I liked the CSI you did on the handles and the repair. It will be interesting to see you make new ones. Thank you for taking us along with you in the process of the rebuild of Pearl.

    Perhaps an idea for a tool box giveaway might be to allow instructors who are teaching machine shop classes to nominate their top students for the giveaway. Most young people just starting out don't have much money for tool purchases and those who are the best students in classes most likely have the greatest interest in the field.

    • @PracticallyMint

      You know what would be neat? Take a riff off the idea of having instructors nominate someone, and see if you could team up with Mike Rowe and his scholarship program to find good candidates for your generosity. His work to encourage more interest in the trades dovetails with this nicely and would be great exposure.

    Handles turned out beautiful Keith! EGAD the welding on the big handle done by 💩? The weld on the small handle must have been done [also by Mr 💩] with mild steel stick rod like E6013, based on all the pin holes lol. Looking forward to the 3D scans.

    happy new year keith. my take on the funky handle repair is they did it on the machine rather than take the machine apart. hence the reason for welding . machine down time was probably more important than esthetics. can't wait to see this metal printing project in action. i know this process has been going on for some time in high end shops jay leno for example. but to see become viable in a small job shop will be a game changer.

  • @59jm24
    @59jm24 Před rokem +1

    I was told that while brazing cast, sometimes a black oxide will form, preventing the brass from wetting the iron.
    the solution is to vigorously scrub the area with a wire brush with flux and with intermit heat.

    Ever use silicon bronze rod? I just ran out of my low fuming bronze and figured I would use my bare tig silicon bronze. With flux of course. It has 1% zinc and 3 or 4% silicon vs. 40% zinc like the low fuming bronze. So its stronger but less ductile. Seems to be working for all my cast iron repairs so far.
    Food for thought....

    • @KeithFenner
      @KeithFenner  Před rokem +3

      Much harder to work. I have in the past used it, but found it not as close of match to wearing surfaces. If it works for you on your project then it is the right material.

    • @EmptyPocketProductions
      @EmptyPocketProductions Před rokem +1

      @@KeithFenner Can you elaborate how it was harder to work? I found it doesn't flow as readily vs. the low fuming. Just looking to compare notes. Thanks

    • @KeithFenner
      @KeithFenner  Před rokem +1

      silicon bronze is my go to tig rod and used on many other than brazing projects, it has a higher liquid tempature when working than general brazing rod.

    Do you have a 3D Metal printer? Sintering is a whole different process having nothing to do with 3D metal printing, so, if so, disregard the rest of this comment. They are CNC controlled lazer machines, unless they are using electron beams to do it now also. Last I heard they are super costly - unless mass production has come into play and they are now within reach for those of us without a large contract ahead of time. I have heard from a die maker that bar stock made from powdered metal is the strongest he's ever used, (not sintered) but I've seen no destructive test results, or asme evaluations on it. electron beam welders and metal 3D printers work in vacuum tight enclosures. The last time I looked, these machines are not small.
