  • Understanding composition is one of the most important skills for an aspiring artist to master. Join me as I give my thoughts on Composition in art for beginners. Beginners usually start by just recording their subject. There is no thought given to the placement of objects on the page or the relationship between the various colours values and edges. In art, as in music, how we arrange those various visual notes is the key first step in creating a successful piece of art. For beginners the whole idea of composition can seem overwhelming. But it does not have to be... Mastering composition can be incredibly fun, challenging and rewarding and it will result in much stronger paintings.

Here's how I see the painting with the center of interest in the center: it has multiple secondary centers of interest AND THEY ARE ALL DIRECT RESULTS OF THE MAIN CENTER OF INTEREST. They move the eye around--and THAT would be enough--but they are ALSO organically, directly related to the main center (source of light, effects of light): they disclose the visual physics of the world. BRAVO!

Do you use horizon and vanishing point?

Hi Renee... I would only use linear perspective where it applies to the subject matter (buildings, street scenes etc. where there are parallel lines) since my subject matter of choice is usually forest scenes ... it doesn’t really apply.

      Hi Avtar
I do have an online art academy where I give critiques to my students. Unfortunately I just don’t have the time to critique every artist who requests it.
