    An old teacher of mine had many saying, watching you draw out and shape these scissors brought one to mind. "Economy of Motion" was one that fits your efforts perfectly. Good post Glen!

      I like that term. But I probably eliminated the wasteful motion when editing! Anyway, I wasn't satisfied and so changed this scissor and will post that later today. Thanks for all you've done for the channel.

    I was actually thinking about making a set of shop scissors with the piece of this yk30 that I got from you. This video was perfect timing, Thanks Glen!

      @gstongs  Před rokem

      Hi Steven, What a coincidence. And after using this piece of YK30, I need to look for more. And I'm happy with this scissor (mostly) but I think I will change it some and maybe show that soon. I hope your pair of scissors come out great. Thanks so much for your donation and all of your generosity. I'll give you the usual recognition, two blacksmithing videos later. Have a great holiday season.😬🎄

    I can already see it now! GS scissors, coming to a store near you!😁 Nice work as always. It's always a good feeling when you see yourself getting better at something through practice.

      You know, if I can get my design down and make better than usual scissors, I may just offer scissors for sale. But scissors are trying my patience. I'll post an update to this video maybe later today. Thanks for all.

    Always learn something from you! I had no idea there were left handed scissors, or that they wouldn't work in the right hand.

    if i didn't see video evidence of the LH/RH cutting comparison, I wouldn't have believed it. Great vid

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  Před rokem

      Yeah, me too. Someone else said a well working scissor will work in either hand so I tried with a decent factory made pair and still had issues. It has something to do with side pressure that is exerted with your preferred hand that is lacking (or opposite) in the other hand. Go figure... Thanks.

  • @jjohnson2553
    @jjohnson2553 Před rokem +1

    With proper blade tension, scissors will cut equally well with either hand although there will be a noticeable comfort difference from left to right because of the way the handles are molded. The problems start when the tension is too loose and we put opposing side pressure on the the handles to force the shearing action. This is just a means of compensating for the loose rivet or screw that controls the blade tension. I'm retired now but I still have all of my equipment and if you were near by I'd put a professional sharpening on those scissors for you. :)

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  Před rokem +1

      I don't doubt you at all. But I tried a pretty good, factory made (right handed) scissor in my left hand and just couldn't cut anything unless I tilted my hand about forty-five degrees. And still, it didn't work ideally. And yeah, if I were near you I'd take you up on the offer. Anyway, I'll keep at it. Thanks.

    he he, I love that left scissor- right scissor thing ....I do know how it works though, I figured it out once, when you put the scissors in the correct hand, your fingers pull the edges together but when they go in the wrong hand they get pushed apart ...weirdly if you put left handed scissors in your right hand with the blades facing you they work (but dont try this at home kids) Its all to do with the way your fingers pull towards your thumb which slides the cutting edges together along their length, thats why there is a slight curve in some scissor blades too, its so the cutting edges follow the same arc your fingers make as they close.
    weird stuff ( btw cool scissors Glen)

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  Před rokem

      Very well explained. I knew it had something to do with side pressure but you said it clearly. And I got a kick out of how a scissor made for the hand you don't usually use will work when pointed towards you. I will try that - carefully... I wasn't overly pleased with this scissor and so changed it and will post that later today. Thanks for sure.

    When cutting out blanks with a disc, drill the inside corners first to create rounded inside radiuses.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  Před rokem

      You know, that's a simple but excellent idea. Not sure why I didn't think of that but then again, there's a lot that escapes my attention when working on something that I'm still not good at. I used this (hot punched a round hole rather than drill) on a knife I was making and it worked a charm. Thanks Ken.

    Re: the cold shut. You might copper braze the crevice. Not just to fill the area, but more to assure that the the crack stops traveling farther. I don't use gas, but I bet that a piece could be brought up to temp in your forge and then the copper melted-in outside the forge with a plumbers torch . Brazing is a substitute for welding in many cases, and I know that you rightly avoid forge-weld with gas. Best wishes.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  Před rokem

      As it stands, I don't think the cold shuts will create any issue. But I like your idea for brazing as that would help and add a decorative aspect. And yeah, I dislike trying to forge weld in my small gas forge. Thanks for the good suggestion Ken.

    Actually, I would say you're ambidextrous considering you write with the left but hammer with the right. My dad was fully ambidextrous. He could write, eat, throw a ball, everything equally well with both hands. However he preferred his left. When he was a kid in school he wrote everything upside down and backwards. The teacher had to read his assignments with a mirror, LOL.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  Před rokem

      Hey Jeff, If I'm not ambidextrous I'm at least pretty close. I mainly only prefer my left hand for writing and so I decided to change this scissor and will post that later today. Your dad's story made me laugh. Thanks.

    Have you had a grinder wheel shatter during use? I have, blade guard saved me from needing a Plastic Surgeon, or perhaps an Ophthalmic Surgeon.
    This is the first time I've noticed you doing something so dangerous; please tell me itvwas just an oversight.

      Hi Bill, This isn't the first time I've used my angle grinder this way. Never had a disc shatter but I need to rethink how I'm using this tool based on your experience, etc. Thanks for your concern.
