Eugene, Oregon: Truly the Hate Crime Capital? (Documentary)

  • This documentary investigates the high hate crime rates in the city of Eugene, Oregon. The progressive college town has been reported by the FBI to have the highest number of hate crimes in the state, and some of the highest numbers of hate crimes per capita of any city in the United States. Are these numbers truly reflective of the atmosphere in Eugene, or could there be more to these statistics than meets the eye?
This project was created entirely by Karli Olson in partial fulfillment of the thesis requirements of the MA Journalism program at the University of Limerick.
Trigger warning: One use of n*****, discussion of racially-biased harassment
If you or anyone you know has been the victim of a hate crime or bias incident in the Eugene area, you can receive support through the Office of Human Rights and Neighborhood Involvement.

If you don’t measure up, though - that’s when things can get nasty.
Note that this is not limited to Eugene or Oregon. It can happen pretty much anywhere, or almost any time now or in the past.
I had to start dealing with not measuring up in early 1960, and in Souther California - due to being born disfigured and disabled - so I find what is said here to be altogether plausible.

This was very well done - beautiful production and very good commentary. I’ve lived In Eugene my whole life, I transitioned to female as a young teenager in a rural school. I was a victim of multiple hate crimes, harassment and physical violence. Yet there were equally as many kids in that school fighting back against the right wing extremism. Eugene is a beautiful city that is growing rapidly in population and in wealth. We have a great school system here, very good roads and relatively reasonable taxes all considered. We have a lot of liberals, a lot of republicans and just enough people in the middle to create in my mind a generally respectable local population. We don’t have much racial diversity, which is disappointing. I think we’re on the way to a better city with better access to resources needed to fix homelessness. We already have really good social programs when you look at our neighboring states and counties. Thank you for providing this CZcams video- I thoroughly enjoyed it and hope more people get to watch this.

All of my experiences with racism have been in Oregon: Bandon, Madras, Klamath Falls, Roseburg, and Coquille. I was shocked because when I first arrived to Oregon, I thought it was a liberal, safe state. Well, that safety is only in the big cities just like Washington state.

Eugene is a lovely place but the Racism here is COVERT which is hard to analyze. The population is behind the cultural curve by at least 10 years. I moved here in 2007 and people were behind in terms of cultural exposure. In the past 14 years it has become more diverse. After George Floyd died, the outrage toward racism was high in Oregon. It effected Eugene to some degree but this place is a bubble. Most people are chill, reserved and friendly but not hateful. They are provincial.

Being behind on the "cultural curve" sounds like just another way of saying white people here do not yet have the exposure to the diversity that you can find elsewhere. That is understandable though. It also is a condition found throughout the west. It's funny but Eugene was always to me way ahead, not behind, the culture curve. So but I guess everyone's point of reference is different. I certainly feel that as more diversity comes to Oregon, Eugene will lead the way in acceptance of it. But they aren't living in a bubble just because they haven't been exposed to what YOU have been exposed to. It's just their reality and probably the only reality they have ever known.

This condition does exist in isolated pockets for sure, but I traveled the state for years on my job and know first hand how intelligent and tolerant Oregonians are. So it is very disappointing to read this badly uninformed point of view. It just perpetuates the worst stereotypes out there and TBH is itself extremely ignorant.

Much of Salem's hate groups & activity isn't as widely reported (as discussed briefly here) because the cops are a big part of the problem & the local MAGA & white nationalist attitude is very much a way of life. Salem is also Frump MAGA central in Oregon. Springfield is problematic to a far bigger degree than Eugene. That's just the current facts. When the KKK ran rampant in Eugene was several decades ago! Oregon is basically still a white state, ranked 14th in terms of its "whiteness" in the US. But smack dab in the middle of it sits Eugene, a progressive university town. That makes it more diverse and with a more educated minority population but one that is still pretty isolated. All of this points to the situation being as described with the higher level of reported hate crimes. You are not going to see this level of hate crime reporting elsewhere due to the level of awareness being much lower. And of course its lower because not that many minorities living in these other towns are going to stick their neck out and report stuff.
