    I’ve had a few male dogs over the years (shih tzu, cairn terrier, and terrier mix) and they all were super easy to housebreak and never had accidents. My current dog is a female standard poodle and has been just as easy and reliable. So for anyone with a different experience, it could be a breed issue or method of training issue…or perhaps the males were not neutered.

      Mine is male, he is cuddly and sweet, really obedient and we have a strong bond (he also does agility competitions), I don't understand why females are considered so different in a good way. I used to have a female mutt and she wasn't as sweet as my actual dog, she was more independent and didn't really care much if I was at home or not

    Thank you for not spaying them super young and doing your research on it. I am not against spaying and neutering at all, but these dogs getting spayed and neutered but doing it when they are too young has been linked to a bunch of issues.

    • @markweaver4424
      @markweaver4424 Před 2 lety +1

      While I respect what has been stated, we must also address that the dogs life is older than the previous 7 years to one that we have always been told. Their age correlates to being around 15 to 1, thus them being in heat at 6-8 months old. This is part of the reasoning that they are spayed/neutered around 12-14 weeks old. All animals age faster than humans and reproduce at an earlier age.

      @poodlemom  Před 3 lety +3

      Lol! Yes! Thanks for sharing this! But it is also good to point out that there is also a difference between the humping of females and males. Females hump (more often than not) to show dominance and not necessarily the hormone drive more than males. At least in my years of experience in owning just female dogs ^^ It could be different for other people too.

    • @markweaver4424
      @markweaver4424 Před 2 lety +1

      I agree with you. We are on our second male poodle, (the first had to be put down at age 16). Neither one humped, and both were very loyal and protective of the house. Neither marked the house. After an initial accident, they both learned to stand at the door when they needed to potty. I’ll stick with the male. I would recommend The Poodle Mom to try having a male to see how they really are.

    I have a 2 and a half year old female Bichon and I have decided that its time for her to have a sister/friend. I’m getting a female toy poodle on May 4. I didn’t know that there are so 4 sizes and so many different colors. I originally wanted a small tiny Red Toy Poodle. But we found out we’re getting a Red Toy Poodle that will grow between 8-12 lbs. Our Bichon is 13 lbs, so that means they will almost be the same height and weight. My husband wanted a male Teacup Red Toy Poodle so, since Fathers Day is coming up and our 1yr wedding anniversary is coming up this September, my friemd recommended the breeder where she bought two of her teacup fur babies from Korea. So I took the plunge and put a deposit for a cute male teacup apricot toy poodle. The cool thing is that he was born 2 weeks before we got married. His bday is Sept 2, 2023. We got married on Selt 16, 2023. My husband doesn’t know yet that I bought another puppy 🤣. But I want it to be a surprise. I’m planning to tell him the news around mid May. Your videos are very helpful. Thank you for the tips. I’m thinking if I should have the male puppy neutered in Korea before he arrives to Chicago in June. He is 7 months now. By the time he arrives here, he will be 9 months. I heard stories from my friends that when their dogs were puppies who were spayed threw up during recovery from the meds and that it took 2 weeks for them to recover. In Korea the breeder is charging extra $300 of I want the puppy neutered. Here in Chicago, I think without insurance, it cost $500. But if you have insurance, its covered and you only pay $40/month. The teacup male toy poodle we’re getting will be 1.5 kg-2 kg as a grown up.

      That’s amazing!! Thank you sooo much for sharing your story!! Hahah I hope to find a partner who loves dogs just as much as I do 😂😂😂
      Regarding the spaying/neutering. Honestly it is really up to you. If you want to save money, then I too would go for the breeder as vet bills are relatively more expensive in the west.
      But since your dog is a male pup, don’t worry- it’s not as invasive as spaying. Male dogs generally recover much faster than females during the process :)

      @@poodlemom Thanks for letting me know that Neutering is not as bad as spaying. I’m worried about the spayimg bec I have a female bichon who is almost 3 yrs old. We want to have her spayed bec its really hard when she has her period. It last for 21 days. Though she doesn’t get heavy flow, more like spotting. She doesn’t want to wear a diaper to protect our couch. She chews the sides and gential area of the pad. She gets too clingy and sometimes she doesn’t have the appetite to eat. I’m just scared bec you and my 3 girl friends said their fur babies puked from the medication and we have to monitor the stitches, and make sure she doesn’t lick it. My fur baby is a licker. She cleans herself a lot. Sometimes I’m wondering if she’s a dog or cat 😆. By the way, I just added you on Instagram.
      I used to be a cat person but I developed asthma. My husband wanted 4 legged kids. I never thought I would become a dog mom. But now I love it so much. I treat her as my own daughter since I can’t have human kids. And now we’re having 2 new fur babies on the way. You will find someone who loves dogs too. Dogs are so sweet, loyal, and will always be your bestfriend. 😊

    Your girls are adorable! I have two female poos. This is out of choice. My girls come from two different breeders and are currently 14 months old and 5 months old, respectively. The younger one's breeder has asked me several times how the girls are getting along, and I can only tell the truth -- they've been like sisters from day one. I'm thinking he was afraid they would be territorial or something? I'm not sure. But they are great. Every day they play, play, and then play some more. The older one does ask for time alone sometimes, and the younger one has also started doing that, so I oblige them by letting them out one at a time. But normally it's all play all the time. They are also independent of me and not clingy, although both are loving and sweet. And very smart. They have me trained well.

    My main qualification for a dog is that they are hypoallergenic, Both my dogs are rescues, one is a poodle mix and the other is a Chinese crested powderpuff, the poodle is male and the powderpuff is female. Some of my research said that a female/male combo gets along better but your 2 girls seem to get along fine so who knows. Tater Tot, the male poodle mix, is definitely sweeter and clingier than Izzy, the female powderpuff, If I had to pick one characteristic that I prefer in a female versus male, Izzy goes out, squats and does her business and she's done. Tater Tot has to pee in 5 different, carefully smelled out locations before he's done. Your poodles are very cute. Have to add, Izzy is bossier and much more mischievous than Tater Tot and I have to say, that seems to be true of most of the female dogs I've owned.

      The Poodle Mom mentioned this in the video at 7:40, go for a female dog if your (current) female dog is intact and you have no plans on spaying her. However, go with a male dog if you're planning to breed them (which I don't recommend unless you have experience in breeding dogs) or your current dog has been spayed.

    Your example of your male chihuahua peeing in the house and your female poodles not as proof male dogs are harder to potty train is severely flawed. Poodles are the 2nd most intelligent dog breed in the world, chihuahuas no where close. Poodles will inherently be much easier to potty train than chihuahuas. It’s not the sex that made the difference, it’s the breed. Especially if your male chihuahua was fixed.

I did mention later on that it's just OUT OF PREFERENCE. I have had experiences with male poodles as well which are both successful and otherwise and each are unique experiences.
      Also, I do not believe it's breed that makes the difference but PERSONALITY of each dog which factors in so many things- including gender based on my OWN set of experiences :)

      @poodlemom  Před rokem +1

      Hello Lisa! Thanks for watching the video! Females have a very low tendency of “marking” aka peeing to leave their smell around the house in general. Females do mark the house but only in one place or their pee place in my experience. Hence for me it’s relatively easier to potty train them. My females leave their mark by rubbing their body on the furniture. 😅
      This is generally speaking ok? It also varies from the dog’s personality. I’ve known some male dogs who don’t mark either. But only a very few :)

    • @poodlemom
      @poodlemom  Před 4 lety +4

      Not that hard. But it is definitely a phase that every owner of any kind of dog will experience. It's called the teething stage. Now, what's key is to teach your puppy what's ok to bite and what's not. XD My girls killed several phone chords, slippers and the corners of my bed LOL

    • @lubazak636
      @lubazak636 Před 2 lety

      If a puppy bites me, I stick more of my hand in, and that is a little uncomfortable, so that stops.
      I would not leave them in the house unsupervised, until the teething is over. Get a playpen when you leave for 4 hours or less. I wouldn’t leave them longer than 4 hrs without boarding, dog walking or day care.

      @poodlemom  Před 3 lety +5

      Hi Giselle! Hmm, make sure to have a set of questions ready to ask the breeder. Don't be afraid to ASK A LOT of questions XD A good breeder would be more than happy to answer them. Ask about the health history of the parents, if they claim "healthy" make sure to ask for solid proof like vet certifications and health tests etc... It's also good to ask how often they breed. Breeding the same dam 2x a year is a red flag if they do it annually. It would also help to ask for a contract. Ask for their terms when it comes to the "health guarantee" of your pup. If there is no contract, it's usually a red flag for me. Lastly, during the day of pick up, I suggest meeting at the vet so you can take the puppy right away for a check up. These are selfish things that I would personally do. It's up to you to filter these XD I'm a very OC and cynical person at times when it comes to these things from many traumatic experiences. I hope these help you. Good luck!

    My friend got herself a puppy for the first time. It's a Pomeranian named Loli. Today she called me saying her Loli started having her first period and that there's blood here and there in the house. She doesn't know what to do now, how to take care of that. She said Loli's been whimpering in pain and all. She was like "pls tell me what to do! You had dogs before. Should I get her pads or something? The vets are closed too due to lockdown. She looks in pain what to do?"
    As I have never had a female dog, I don't know what to do either 😅😅 so I came here to ask other experienced female dog owners about that.
    Can you help please? Please tell me how you dealt with the period stuff.

    • @poodlemom
      @poodlemom  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi there! Wow, the pup got her period so early. Much like humans, sometimes the period can cause discomfort to female dogs. Back then, I used to use dog diapers, but over time, I found it was so wasteful because they do not really use up the diapers. So what I did, I bought some dog underwear for females then got some human sanitary panty liners to line the dog underwear. That helps with the mess. But you have to let your dog out every so often. If your pup is not potty trained then I suggest going with the dog diapers instead. :)

      Hi @Elizabeth ! Thank you so much for watching our videos! I am happy that you find them insightful and helpful. Oh wow! congratulations on the new furry family members. Hmm, I don't see any problem with putting them together as puppies but this changes when they start maturing and getting older. I would suggest Neutering your male pup as much as possible if not spay the Sammy when you can- just to make sure there is no chances of any accidents.
      But realistically speaking, since the male is smaller than the female, most likely it'll be harder for any breeding to happen. BUT THIS IS NOT 100% impossible! My aunt had a male Japanese Spitz and a small sized female Chihuahua and an accident happened. I got so scared for the female Chihuahua and we were so shocked that it could happen. You'd be surprised by how nature will manage to take it's course, so if you do not want any accidental pregnancies better to fix one of them just to be safe.
      I hope this helps XD
