    Good review! If a ruleset has good mechanics resulting in smooth gameplay, I'm interested in giving them a try. It's amazing the detail the 2mm printed troops carry in the photos. Our group is married to 28s. My weekly opponent and I use 15s. Another gamer friend uses 10s. Getting down to 2mm might be a leap. Perhaps we'll try 6mm first. Thanks again, Alex for the work you do for the hobby!

      Thank you, yeah 2mm can be as good as the bigger scales if you are using it correctly. They are also pretty cheap, so you could easily put together two forces so the others in the group don't have to put any effort in for a first game.

      It’s aimed at smaller scales not exclusively 2mm. Indeed we will be doing both 2mm and 6mm games at Joy of Six.

    Cracking review, nicely in depth as usual. Looks like a good ruleset. I already have To the Strongest which has quite a bit of crossover but always good to see more ancient games coming out.

      Thank you, Mark mentioned to me that To the Strongest was also an influence on S&H, so you're already in good company it seems.

    Cracking review, they do seem well thought out rules. It’s just not pushing my buttons, I think it’s just too small for me. I just don’t see the figures. In the ven diagram of wargaming miniature painting and collecting is more important to me than I thought.

    Excellent review. I got my copy last week but haven had time to do more than flick through until now. I feel like I'm ready to dive in and read them properly.. and maybe buy an army or two at Partizan on Sunday 😆

      Cheers Lee, it is a great game, really smooth flowing and loads of fun. Hopefully I'll see you at Partizan, I'll be with our club demoing a game of S&H, so call over and say hello.

    There’s nothing wrong with calling it a board game…. Is there?

      No, that was my argument, it's not really the criticism that some people seem to think it is.

    So having decided that I already have enough Ancient Rules ... I guess I am going to be buying a set of these at Partizan. Look forward to seeing the demo on Sunday as well. Perhaps discuss the pleasures of digging Hillforts over Villas. Off to watch the TFL videos now, whilst painting some more 6mm ancients

    great review. At some point I'd like to get into ancients. Unfortunately for me, I'm not a fan of grids so I will give this one a pass. Have a good one my friend 👍

    Anyone know how this would compare to To The Strongest! (another gridded ancients game which I like a lot)? I know the card activation / resolution system in TtS! is very different.
    In the illustrations it looked like units were occupying two squares at once, which seems weird?
    How many units can occupy one square?
    Is it the same 12 x 8 table size for games?

    • @StormofSteelWargaming
      @StormofSteelWargaming  Před 2 lety +1

      The units occupy two 3x3 inch squares (so 6x3 inch), each square is occupied by one unit. The table is 6x4 foot.

    Wargame? Rome? I'm in. Me and my trusty gladius accept this nice game. Thank you for review upload mate. 🫡I just bought Imperium Romanum and Axis Empires Ultimate Edition games. Imperium Romanum looks nice game but me and my gaming mates think it would be better to have tactical combat instead just rolling dice for stack. Squeezing dramatic and epic Roman battle to roll dice feels unrewarding. Just imagine battle of Alesia to be decided in 2,3 seconds and reading printed casualties from CRT is too anticlimactic. I was thinking to use tactical level miniature wargame as "subgame" what comes to combat. IR rules still be used on strategic level but tactical level needs some nice to system to complete gaming experience and elevate it to Principate level.
