The play is so good. Music, fantastic. Set pieces, fantastic. Stage effects, fantastic. Please, do yourself a favor and see the play so you can understand the movie.
You should really see the play. So many iconic lines from the play were in the trailer. And the music live will give you chills. I cannot wait to see this in November.

You should read the book and then see the play. You need to understand.
This is the PREQUEL to ‘The Wizard of Oz..’ how the Wicked Witch becomes wicked.
And the Good Witch (originally ‘Galinda’, later she becomes ‘Glinda’.)
becomes kind and good.
I wouldnt say reading the book is essential. yes, the play is inspired by the book. but it is a very loose adaptation. the book is very different
