the reason in flash memory deteriorates over time (hence a 480gb drive truly has 500, just 20gb is used to replace the deteriorated parts) not shutting down lets it deteriorate (not really faster, just giving it more time to do so)

SSD's are energy savers, but constantly writing and reading will just damage them as more as a standard HDD.
So, either going for the speed and possibly losing your files if you don't back up, or just go to a standard HDD.

That only applies with the MacBook Pro Retina Displays. Those are very difficult to upgrade due to the fact everything is soldered down to the motherboard. The Non-Retina display MacBook Pro's have normal HDD so yes these would apply, bear in mind don't attempt to do this if you have no idea what you're doing. You should only attempt this if you have very good knowledge of this and have had previous experience doing something similar.
    Good Luck.

Completely agree, except the fact that any sort of upgrade will void your warranty.
The hard drive and the ram are user upgradable components (the DVD drive, however isn't)
And the retina macbook pro delivers lesser real life battery performance than the non-retina one.
Just wanted to point out the upgrading the ram and/or the hdd won't void your warranty.

    Possible counterarguments:
    1. 200$ cheaper
    2. Almost 1TB storage in RAID 0 !
    3. Non Glossy Screen !
    4. Why should the warranty be lost ? Reversing the upgrade process is soo easy ! -> warranty not voided :)
    5. Thunderbold SSD -> external! Extremely important since it should be a portable computer :)
Aside from that, i would have also picked the retina version.. :)

Yes, the easiest way is using the preinstalled software called bootcamp. what it lets you do is partition your hard drive(s)/SSD(S) to run both Windows or Max OS X. Then if you want to you can also buy a Third party program called Parallels which will let you install a virtual machine of Windows (Though I wouldn't do that for gaming) or even access the Bootcamp partition you may have made. PM me if you wish to know more.

if your laptop can support something like the procedure of the MacBook pro, then go with that (google around to see if it's possible), if not, you may need a hard-drive enclosure so you can use the 1TB drive as an external drive. I have a mid 2010 MacBook and I have the seagate 1tb hybrid drive, so that's something to consider if you want storage and increased speed, not quite SSD speeds, but still reasonably fast.

It's very easy to do it yourself. All you need is to watch some tutorials and you'll be set! That's what I always do :) Never failed once! Just make sure to follow more than one tutorial.

Now you should understand me.Am not trying to argue. You are actually right. RAIDing your drivers isn't really the best thing to do. yes it boost your speed but if one disk failed for whatever reason, you can kiss goodbye all your data. Raid drivers are two time more likely to fail. Anti-glare screens are good but glossy ones have deeper blacks and more vibrant color with is better for video, photo editing.Apple sure knows what their screws look like.Upgrading will sure leave marks on them.

Yes I have a early 2011 one and I upgraded it with 8GB of RAM, it makes a difference believe me! For even better results replace your HDD with a SSD!

I'll be doin this soon. I think macs are next to useless when it comes to having any real control and flexibility but I need to use one for work. Better to have a hot rodded pinto than a stock one. Thanks for the vid.

Because the 480GB is a SSD (solid state drive). SSD are more reliable, up to 10 times faster, and can handle drops and physical abuse better than a mechanical (spinning) hard drive. So 2 480GB SSD is like 960GB or 1TB in RAID.

Cam you do a pc build where you take an average consumer case and max it out with the best stuff you can? This would mean including filling the drive cages, maxing those PCIE slots, and fitting so many fans in there you would feel like there's a tornado next to you. Best ATX board, best ram, server class cpu, more gpus than you will know what to do with.

I think the idea is that with upgrading the old macbook pro that then if you want to upgrade anything else later on in time when technology improves you can.
With the retina model as its all secured down you cannot change anything out so if you want to improve it later on you dont have much of a choice.

He actually ended up paying 3410.11$. Its actually 200$ cheaper getting the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display with a 2.7GHz Intel Core i7 Processor, 16GB of Ram, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory and 768GB of SSD. All you lose is 192GB but, you gain Retina display, a lighter laptop, longer battery life and you don't have to open up your laptop which means that you don't lose warranty.
