The rise of IZ*ONE: How the last Produce group impacted K-pop

  • The rise of IZ*ONE started two and a half years ago when they debuted.
    The 12 ladies would shatter records and from 2018 to early 2021 would be the second most popular group after TWICE. The group would shatter records for sales in the first week and have albums and Eps that would go platinum and double platinum.
    IZ*ONE proved that collaboration between K-pop idols and J-pop AKB48 Group idols could not only work but would be wildly popular. The group would have a huge fanbase, called WIZ*ONEs, in Korea, Japan, and outside of Asia.
    Unfortunately, the girls would be dragged into the Mnet voting manipulation, as it was shown the show’s producers rigged the show. This included IZ*ONE’s final lineup. Despite this controversy in the background, IZ*ONE not only succeeded but thrived.
    When it was announced the group would disband after their two-and-a-half-year contract, fans raised about $3 million USD to save them. More radical fans tried to demand that the group to stay together at the CJ E&M offices. However, the group would follow through and disband in April 2021.
    When IZ*ONE disbanded, it marked the end of the Produce era. Created from the incredibly popular music reality show, Produce 48, the group was instantly popular from their debut.
    But rather than dwell on the negative news surrounding the group, let’s break down how the last Produce group became a huge hit in Korea. IZ*ONE impacted K-pop that only a few female groups could match.
    Let’s watch The Rise of IZ*ONE unfold and see their story.

    I have been a wiz*one since day 1 and these girls have a very special place in my heart. Not only are they musically talented in terms of singing, dancing, and rapping [ ;) ], but their personalities of being humble, kind, and humorous [crackheads] not only to each other but everyone they interacted with really made me fall in love with them which is why they will always be my ultimate Kpop group. Even people in the industry always complimented the girls when working with them. In other words, the vibes all 12 members give off even when together makes them so strong and personable. Plus, all of their title tracks and even B-sides are bops, no doubt.
    Also, the fandom of wiz*ones are truly unique, unlike any other fandom I've been a part of since becoming a Kpop fan in 2013. The unity we showed through trending daily hashtags on Twitter after the entire scandal in late 2019, to the creation of our own paper company for the Parallel Universe Project, raising over 3 million dollars with JUST Korean wiz*one's money in about three months, while still trending daily hashtags on Twitter today. This fandom is seriously the best and one-of-a-kind.
    No matter what the outcome is regarding PUP, wiz*ones will always support the girls in the future. Also, it was confirmed from the members' agencies that many do want to continue IZ*ONE activities fyi. :)

    I was an AKB48 fan but got into kpop thanks to produce48 and izone. produce48 aired free in japan so many young japanese watched the show and became a fan of izone. izone came on one of the most famous japanese variety shows such as shabekuri 007 and fukaii hanashi and catched alot of public attention.
    But I wan't to point out that JO1, the group made from produce 101 japan is very successful and they sell better than all of the kpop groups that debuted in 2020. JO1is one of the best profit makers for cjenm now.

    • @Popsori
      @Popsori  Před 3 lety +5

      That's true that JO1 is very successful. I wish I added that in the video, as Produce 101 Japan was as popular from an international standpoint. But in Japan, the show and JO1 are doing incredibly well, as you said.
      As for IZ*ONE coming from the Shabekuri 007 and Fukaii Hanashi, good catches. They came from some popular variety shows and I can see why the group is hugely popular in Japan as well.

    IZ One, at its height, was the premier Kpop girl group, perhaps the second only to Blackpink. Its sales record was also the second, only behind Blackpink. It sold 1.3 million physical copies in 2020, which was unheard of in Kpop girl group history until Blackpink broke the record by selling 1.5 million copies. Some indicators pointed out that IZ One was the bigger girl group than Twice or Red Velvet. Well, it is hard to say. It is certainly debatable. But IZ One certainly has achieved a lot in a very short span. One thing clear is that it has one of the strongest hardcore fans in Kpop.

    • @Popsori
      @Popsori  Před 3 lety +4

      Agreed. From 2018 until IZ*ONE's disbandment in 2021, you could say the top three female groups in Korea was Twice, IZ*ONE, and Blackpink. While like you say, it's debatable IZ*ONE could have been better than Twice (or Red Velvet), I think Twice's longevity, consistency, and public perception in Korea would still put them on top imo.

    • @sinnopal1
      @sinnopal1 Před 3 lety +4

      @@Popsori I agree. IZ One was fantastic between 2018 to 2021 but, Twice was already Kpop superstar prior to 2018. Twice had incredible 2016 and 2017. It's highest achievement came not from SK, but from Japan, where Twice had sold-out concerts at stadium venues! Not even Blackpink could have done this. That is why Twice is #1 girl group in Korea and Japan while Blackpink is the #1 globally. Twice also has more hits and awards during this period than any girl group overall. I think the battle between IZ One and Red Velvet is closer one. While IZ One is beloved in Korea and Japan, RV has longevity, consistency and public perception that it is the "Biggest group" from the most powerful agency in SM.

    • @Popsori
      @Popsori  Před 3 lety

      Definitely, Twice was incredibly dominant in 2016 and 2017. It was great to see Twice's dominance firsthand living in Seoul, as everyone would talk about Twice and play their songs.
      Would also agree that Blackpink is #1 globally for female K-pop groups. I think Western countries like the Blackpink, girl-crush, confident style more.
      With IZ*ONE and Red Velvet, that battle is a lot closer. Overall, like you said, I would put RV ahead of IZ*ONE, since they have that longevity, consistency, and public recognition that they're SM's biggest female group.

  • @nakonyaaa9896
    @nakonyaaa9896 Před 3 lety +28

    Actually ONE. THE STORY concert was never meant to be a final concert. They (CJ) just dropped out of sudden D-3 before Concert that it would be their final one, which was weird because that meant there were gonna be a 1 month break after the concert. Even the concert quote wasn't like the other Produce's group final concert, since the other directly tells a farewell while IZ*ONE didn't have, which reflect there's something going weird in the middle of contract extension meeting. Two of members' songs performed at the concert was also never digitally released till now and a magazine interview told us that the members are actually still preparing for the KR/JP ver. respectively of their unreleased concert songs and many more songs for the groups, and CJ - SOTR actually didn't let them to release them even after their disbandment despite them having 1 month break after the concert till the contract termination. That's why KWIZ were enraged that doing all they can to keep all the 12 members and IZ*ONE name for future activity. Since the 12 of them have a real chemistry and friendship with each other, that they still personally express that they miss each other even after their disbandment. They also still keeps communicating and meeting with each other as much as they can. It's only due the agencies greed and contract that forced them to separate. Plus do you know how hard it's to build and nurture a new group's fame if they ended up to redebut? Have you ever count how many new groups have debuted from IZ*ONE era till now? It's even more depressing to see the fact that most Produce members' group doesn't have much popularity at hands, even some of them ended up disbanding or unactive making them experience multiple farewells. Most the ex Produce groups' members have millions of followers while the non-Produce members of the group grew unnoticed. Not to mention most agencies only see their trainees or idols as simply a money maker. I just really question those agencies stan that completely blinded by the fact that they are the fans of their idols not their companies.

    • @Popsori
      @Popsori  Před 3 lety +5

      For sure and I should have worded it better in the video that One: The story was not planned to originally be a final concert. I think IZ*ONE was surprised and/or confused about a possible contract extension.
      I can't blame WIZ*ONEs for being mad, as the disbandment was not handled in the best way. But at the same time, the contract was set for two and a half years originally and they met that timeline, so it's a tough situation. I can see this from the labels' standpoint of wanting their idols back to debut in their own company's groups.
      As for most Produce members' groups not having much popularity, that's true. The Produce groups were all from a very well branded TV show, so it's the equivalent of debuting from "The Big 3" or Hybe. The Produce brand is the very reason why IZ*ONE was so popular and why each member has millions of followers today. Debuting from that brand meant instant success and an already-built in fanbase of millions of Produce fans from the first two seasons.
      While you bring a strong point that fans follow idols, not companies, it's those same companies that do business and make profit. It takes both idol and company to make profit in the end.

    Was never a huge IZ*ONE fan when they were around, but I always thought groups like them and Twice were really important for uniting Korea and Japan, it's a shame we're going to lose that now. Having a group with both Korean and Japanese members is a great way to balance out the market.
    These new "all-Japanese K-Pop groups" such as JO1 and NiziU don't seem like a good thing to me. Their immense success has me worried that Korean agencies will invest more in these Japanese groups, as that's where the money is, and thus neglect from promoting their Korean groups in Japan.

    • @Popsori
      @Popsori  Před 3 lety +13

      I agree with you that groups like TWICE and IZ*ONE are important for uniting Korea and Japan. Pop culture has a way of soothing rivalries and past history a bit better.
      As for JO1 and NiziU, I think it's what you say: making more money in Japan. The big problem with Korean groups promoting in Japan is there's a huge barrier. You probably know this, but Japanese fans don't like Korean groups if they just "promote and run," or basically, just go to the country to make money and leave.
      Japanese fans respect K-pop groups that learn the language and culture and stay awhile. It's a big reason why 2PM, KARA, and Tohoshinki (TVXQ) were so popular in Japan. With JO1 and NiziU, even if they have some K-pop influences, they're still Japanese and know the country's language and culture, which means they'll be a lot more accepted in Japan.

    izone simply encapsulated exactly what it means to be a kpop idol - they have millions of international fans, yet this didn't get to their heads to the point where they abandoned the true essence of kpop. too often do we see groups from the big 3 companies become westernised due to their growing global success, but not izone. they are true to korean pop which is so rare to see nowadays.

      Definitely, it's sad that IZ*ONE disbanded, especially since they kept up with the other two biggest girl groups: Twice and Blackpink.
      I think each member will do well individually and maybe they can reunite. It will be tough to reunite though, since there's lots of K-pop labels to negotiate with to get everyone back.
      But unexpected things have happened in K-pop before, so never say never with an IZ*ONE reunion!

    • @reyn6099
      @reyn6099 Před 2 lety

      Starship is the only reason why the relaunch failed huhu. But we can’t blame starship though because starship and mnet had a sus back then mnet kept on sabotaging starship’s artist, There’s also a reason why starship kept rejecting the relaunch they already set a GG when Yujin and wonyoung finish their activity with iz*one. But only if starship just gave wiz*one a chance just for only 2-3 years extension is it too much to ask? Even yujin and wonyoung wants to relaunch with iz*one should they consider the decision of their artist right? Because iz*one got cut to short to met their fans due to covid situation.
      I hope we will see them in one stage again😭 iz*one is the biggest loss in kpop and iz*one gonna leave a mark in history that produce group can keep up with the JUGGERNAUT GG LIKE TWICE AND BP

    I liked IZ*ONE and wish they had a contract extension. Historically, the follow up groups formed following the disbandment of Produce series groups have done almost uniformly poorly in terms of subsequent sales and activities, and so it really seems to be a bad decision by all of the agencies which refused to continue. Their greed is understandable but stupid from a business perspective.
    I am highly skeptical that IZ*ONE drew much attention in the Korean market to the 48 groups. Japanese Idols are a very different thing than Korean idols. The 48 groups in particular are cabaret acts who invite their audience to invest themselves in individual idol's progress within a revolving-door system where new members are constantly enter and leave the group. There is, as you point out, talent there, but it's much more about the process rather than the results (i.e. the songs and MVs). AKB48 has had an unbelievable string of hits in Japan, routinely double that of IZ*ONE's or even TWICE's sales in Japan, but a significant portion of those sales were driven by the sousenkyos (elections) which both chose members for some the singles and allowed fans to track the progress of their favorite members. Neither the cabaret form nor the election system has been tried successfully in S. Korea, AFAIK (in contrast to the handshake events that the 48 groups perfected if not initiated and are now wholly integrated in Korea).

    • @Popsori
      @Popsori  Před 3 lety +1

      I can see your point with IZ*ONE not drawing as much attention to the AKB48 groups. Even with IZ*ONE's popularity, the AKB48 groups are a bit too weird for K-pop fans.
      With that being said, I've seen some AKB48 and HKT48 videos post-disbandment with a lot more Korean comments on CZcams. Same goes on Naver cafes talking about J-idol music a bit more, thanks to IZ*ONE. I do think having the sousenkyos (elections) implemented in K-pop would be hard to do. Some other aspects of AKB48 groups would be hard to pull off in Korea as well.
      As with the follow up groups to Produce groups, you bring up a good point. Nearly all of them are not successful post-Produce groups, for some odd reason. And as for having IZ*ONE go past their two and a half year contract, I can definitely see greed seeping in. From a business perspective, I think many of the labels wanted their idols back.

    • @mohitoride
      @mohitoride Před 3 lety +1

      Produce itself was using the sousenkyo elections as a template via the voting, the AKB system is probably more secure since you have to buy physical items compared to relatively cheap phone votes in Produce.

    • @scttschlz
      @scttschlz Před 3 lety

      @@mohitoride It's a good point that the Produce series did try to exploit that idea that the power was (supposed to be) entirely in the hands of the public voters as is the case of the AKB48 sousenkyo senbatsus (singles). There was that incessant framing that "you are the producers" in the Produce series. I'm not sure "secure" is the right word, but I see what you're getting at: having people pay for a cd per vote is a surer way to know which of the performers people will be willing to shell out money for in the future.

    • @scttschlz
      @scttschlz Před 3 lety +1

      @@Popsori It's interesting to consider what Aki-P and AKS (the former parent corporation of the 48 groups) wanted out their participation in Produce 48. I'm sure they wanted to lift the brand awareness of the 48 groups, and, in that sense, IZ*ONE was probably even more successful for them than they expected exactly as you say. But I also can't help wonder if they also wanted to establish a toe-hold in Korea itself to create a 48 group in Seoul, but those plans were frustrated at the outset by limiting the voting within the series to Koreans. It was certainly odd to name the series Produce 48 and not have 48 members from Japan which (pure speculation) I feel they would have were the voting system more equitable for the Japanese participants.

    • @mohitoride
      @mohitoride Před 3 lety +1

      @@scttschlz Feels like a pure audience vote is never the ideal solution because mass vote via electronic or big spenders. Mnet ran the show like any other and created successful groups where there is a panel and director input, the issue is the misleading marketing.
      The other side of the whole debacle is immense pressure to create a hit group. If you left the chances to the masses you often get many misses like normal talent audition shows. Kpop is still heavily controlled by agencies to make successful idols/product as opposed to an artist coming of their own.
      Nobody likes when a promising/talented group just disbands because they couldn't catch on, so it does have a logic for what the PD of Produce did.
      The outcome is kind of the same as the manipulation, if Produce failed to deliver a hit group it would mean the system doesn't work (audience were wrong) and kpop declining. CJ was really starting to dominate the industry and competing with the big 3.

Professional judges (5/7/9/11/13/21) who are active in entertainment industry (like all of the past teachers/mentors/judges for Produce series and JYP, YG, etc) should be doing the ranking. Put priority on talent, ability, personality, appearance, etc to create a well balanced group (like IZ*ONE). Less emphasis on popularity. Having a couple million people voting on who they like (using different criteria and biases) is not the way to put together a well balanced group.

    I personally really disliked the produce 101 franchise when i watched it. The voting system was just a popularity competition, which is fine, however survival shows are somewhay reality shows, and I feel there are some real talented and charismatic idols who dont get a fair start because something dumb like visuals, but also that it a reality show, they sensationalise things. For example it put kpop on higher pedalstool compared to jpop and the holier than thou attitude made me respect the show less. That's no suprise these shows do so well because ppl loooovveee a good survival show. But we lice in a society where the more good looking the more success you will have. REALITY SHOWS AND IDOL SYSTEMS CAPITLISE ON THAT which is why i dont support produce. Also, i was not surprised about the vote rigging. It was obvious.

      For sure, with reality shows, it really is a popularity show. Things like visuals are going to be placed at the top or near the top of important characteristics, for better or worse. I think it comes down to Korean culture, where looks are highly valued, even moreso than most other countries.
      I can understand the bias against the Produce franchise and heck, even Mnet shows. I know Mnet has new shows like Queendom and Girls Planet 999 with a new "observer" system to prevent vote-rigging. But I'm very skeptical of the observer system unless there's total transparency every show, where any viewer can see all the calculations each idol's voting total.

      But like you said, very few actually make a comeback even if they win a revival show. Brave Girls is the best example in recent years of a group getting a second chance and it wasn't from a revival show. I think these days, content creators and fans' videos going viral provide a much better shot of an artist becoming popular again than revival shows.
      But with that being said, I can't knock revival shows, since their intent of giving second chances is a good goal.

      I don't think it was expanded upon in this video but a big part of AKB that I dont think people outside of Japan (or where their sister groups are located) can experience is the "idols you can meet" factor. It's the attainability of the idols and jpop is meant to be more down to earth. AKB48/sister groups hosts concerts/performances almost DAILY (each team rotates, taking turns), and after every concert, you can have a meet and greet with the idols. It's a whole bigger investment to Stan them (like money, time, etc...)
      Also there is more emphasis on skills beyond being an idol (ie entertainer/comedian). It's not just about dancing and singing. Depending on each region they have different themes (if AKB is the original/base model), ie SKE (focus on power/dance/darker concept), NMB (focus on comedy/skits/entertainers), HKT (focus on youth/cute/models), etc... They are trained fundamentally in different things, you can't expect idols who spend half their time prepping comedy specials like NMB to be the best at dancing or singing.

      Having worked in the industry, I know having a 12 member group, plus their staff and managers (let's say 40 people, which is still too small), the donated money to relaunch would be actually a bit too little. Don't get me wrong, having an extra $3 million is great, but it's not the biggest factor.

      @@yujinnie4884 no they talk about the last two season because IOI and WannaOne were already disbanded. Also, the amount of rigging in the last two seasons were clearly more seriois

    JPop never requires height and weight. That is the deal and also every "oshi" fandoms are massive. Secretly massive. Merch in Japan is TOO EXPENSIVEEEEE. But JPop MVs for girls are too 1980s style. Tooooooooo lousy. But JPOP BOY BANDS ARE TOO REFRESHING than JPop girlbands. Just my opinion as a JPop fan please no offense. Advance apology for those who will be hurt.

      Ahhh yes, a WIZ*ONE that's in denial and butt hurt. You make all the awesome WIZ*ONEs look bad.
      So if IZ*ONE hasn't disbanded, despite an official statement from the labels saying they did, what do you call the group's status then?

    I don't understand why both IZ*ONE fans and Kpop fans in general refer to the produce scandal as something bad and unfortunate. People were robbed, many artists' careers were ruined. It's a good thing that (some of) the people responsible for that got some kind of punishment.
    IZ*ONE had a few good songs and some great members, but everything was a mess since the beginning. From their company deciding to ignore a member's potential and popularity just because of her nationality, to fans thinking they own the group members and trying to manage their lives and career, being extremely hateful against the Jpop industry or anything that comes from Japan... sadly, now I only remember IZ*ONE now as the conflictive group from the past that thank God no longer exists.
    Produce48 was a great idea, but everything was executed poorly since day 1 of filming until the debuted group disbanded. I'm so glad it's finally over.

    • @Popsori
      @Popsori  Před 3 lety +2

      I see what you mean as using the words "bad" and "unfortunate." What I meant is that it's unfortunate IZ*ONE had to go through the whole voting scandal in the background while on Produce 48 and later as IZ*ONE.
      I do agree that setting up the group was messy. Like you said, Produce48 was a great idea. But I don't think that those troubles should be blamed on IZ*ONE.
      I'm just hoping that IZ*ONE gives a better impression of J-pop, while the ladies continuing to do well post-IZ*ONE.

      Oddly enough I think the companies w/the people arrested/punished should have been sued by the "aggrieved parties/individuals" Cause in my mind money is what is most important to these companies. The fact that a couple of people went to jail/prison for a while ( ithink I heard that said during the vid) has almost no delirious effect for the "guilty" company and the overall corrupt system. I don't know the particulars of the case I assume the employers of the "guilty producers" were not fined in any significant amount if at all.

    • @Popsori
      @Popsori  Před 3 lety

      I agree that the trainees themselves should have sued the companies. Hit those companies where it hurts the most for them: money. I do know that the guilty parties got hit with a fine anywhere from $10k to $40k USD. Many of the producers were sent to jail for a year and a half to two years.
      Personally, I think when they get out of jail, they should be banned for working on any show that relies on voting for at least 5 years.

    • @bobansak2583
      @bobansak2583 Před 3 lety +1

      @@Popsori Thanks for the info. If those fines are for indivdual guilty people that's an OK amount. If their employers paid that should be at ~X10. Who got the $?. I think the ban should be longer and for any position of management/production etc... Btw Good post!
