  • Another song from the "A Month of Somedays" album - this one written for fellow Poco alumnus, original drummer George Grantham.
    George suffered a stroke in 2004 and over the past few years has also fallen victim to dementia - as he and his wife grew older, it became apparent that she was no longer able to take care of him, so he moved in with my family at the beginning of 2023 in what was supposed to be a temporary arrangement - but he ended up spending almost the entire year with us.
    I resolved that we were going to get him up off the sofa and out into the world while he was still able to get up and go - I took him to Muscle Shoals, Memphis, Philadelphia (twice!), he ate a hundred pounds of guacamole and saw and did a ton of stuff in the time we had.
    He tripped and fell walking onto the porch late in the year and was hospitalized, and the doctors would not discharge him back into our care because they determined that he needed a higher level of professional supervision, so he went into assisted living for a period, then was elevated to memory care later - the last few times I saw him, he didn't remember my name.
    Thanks for the music and the memories, Double-G.

    Great song and tribute to George. Such a great drummer who played exactly what Poco needed in their great music. Nailed all those high vocals too!

    Tom, your words and music in this piece are so special and meaningful. I love and enjoy all your music, but the time and love you have given to George is what I admire the most about you. This song and Ashley Campbell's 'Remembering' are probably the best songs that capture the essence of this terrible disease. I know first hand what it means to love someone who doesn't remember you........

    • @tomhampton
      @tomhampton  Před měsícem +1

      Yeah, man...Ashley earned her perspective by living through it, too, for sure. Even after GG's stroke, he'd have lapses with his short term memory, but the dropoff during the year he was here was pretty crazy to watch. You know how your gas tank takes forever to go from full to half a tank and then from there, you go to E almost instantly? It was like that in a lot of ways.

      @@tomhampton The gas tank is an excellent analogy. My mother had dimentia. Her first half tank lasted several years, then the second half was gone in 18 months.....

    Tom, I LOVE this... great tribute to Poco's 'backbone'. It's hard to see our idols from our younger years become frail and start fading... we can remember them when they were young and so full of love and life ❤️I hope they're caring well for George; he deserves nothing but respect and love.

    Rusty, Paul & Randy are gone. Furay, Schmit & Messina seem healthy and active. George is stuck in the middle. I wonder what it is that made that so. It's a nice tribute.

    I patterned my drumming after Ringo and then George came along and his pattern was the one I followed after that. I was so fortunate to see him play twice. Spoke to him once, up close and told him that I still Love his drum solo on Drivin' Wheel from Poco 7 and he just lit up. Thanks Tom and George, I Love you. Doug up in Green Bay, WI🥁

      Funny that you mention "Drivin' Wheel" - in this video, there's a scene from a local used record store near where we live, and the camera pans from the store owner over to GG as he's nodding and smiling..."Drivin' Wheel" is the song that's playing in the store during that scene. :)

    Beautifully done. Fantastic tribute to George. Thank you so much for introducing George to me. We had a great few weeks together on those Saturday afternoons. As you know I've followed Poco since 1971 so honored when you brought him by the store. I felt it then and I still feel now that I am now a friend of rock-'n'-roll royalty. Thanks my Brother.
