I agree with some of those that are saying the ending that was left in the film fits better with the movie. The stage ending is beautiful and heart breaking but considering this wasn't an actual stage production and a cinematic film, the way Angel is captured at the end of the original ending is still beautifully heartbreaking as she was the last person we see before credits start rolling. Not to discredit this ending. Both are beautiful.
I completely break when I see Angel come on screen. Every time.

Both endings are beautiful. I still get teary eyed as we see Angel as the final person, the one who tied them all close.
However the empty spotlight, symbolizing loss among friends. However she comes back to her spotlight showcasing even though she's gone, she's still part of them. It also ties in at the beginning of the stage, when we hear Tom really give alot of emotion to his lyric "or the way that she died". I love both endings but this gives alot more emotion, even if it's just because of one empty spotlight and a small reappearance among her friends. Beautiful movie/play overall. One of my personal favorites
I love how Benny is included in both endings. He made his choices and detached from the group, but he was still very much a part of them.
He kinda redeemed himself in the play, but the film didn't show it.

It's a pretty uneven movie, all told. But this would have really made it stick the landing. It's beautifully acted. I still get chills and cry, seeing that empty spotlight... and then when Angel walks out. It's exceptional.
I wasn't expecting any of it... the empty spotlight... Angel coming in from offstage. Talk about an emotional moment.
An even better alternative ending: angel is there on stage at the beginning and walks off before the end of the song with everyone smiling and Collins grabbing his hand the same way.
That's very poignant, and with that said, it should have been the true ending to nicely accentuate the film's ending as a way of showing to cherish life and not take it for granted as time passes. But it would be even better with the others who have HIV or AIDS to leave the stage after Angel until there is no one left except for the ones who survive with them not forgetting their friends and loved ones.

I saw the live performance 6 times, from opening in NYC, to San Francisco x3 and outside London. EACH performance was its’ own, and I loved the actors in this SO much. I don’t watch movies. And I had NO idea Jessie could SING😍 And Dawson(?)
Amazing. I still wear the Original Grey w/ black RENT, close to 30 years later, still answer questions, or share stories. You all are amazing- not sure what this is for, but it works. This is NOT just a show- it’s life. I tell people it’s NOT about being gay or HIV+ it’s about being alive. So, from a rural grandmother, celebrating 40+ years of marriage this month, thank you for making even my husband enjoy your great interpretation of Steven’s work🌹
I love this ending!! It's the perfect part to end , with angel there !!! It's a symbolism about no matter what happens , this group be complete on love and spirit.
2024 and still one of the best song ever. Life changer. Thank you Jonathan Larson.

I’m not gonna lie, I think this ending, which was taken straight from the theater production, works better in the theater version and not here. The version that ended up in the movie was actually more poignant for that purpose.
You’re absolutely right, which is why Christopher Columbus went with the ending we see on the film. That said, I’m really happy we got to have this one too. The first time I saw that moment with Angel, I completely lost it. LoL. As another commenter said, Thank You Jonathan Larson.
when i saw this on stage for the first time i felt like my heart got punched and it was so strong i sobbed for 5 minutes after

I think I remember hearing somewhere that the test audience thought Angel was alive again so they used the other one.
@@TamLin275 The test audience must have been high on something. It should have been clear to them that it was the actors on the stage singing and not their characters during this alternate ending.
In my view this endingt does tie in with the beginning of the film. But to make it work better Angel does return and stand in place to finish the song but then at the end Angel should have disappeared/vanished like the others with AIDS did in the song Without You ...Or the cast begins to vanish once Angel returns leaving only Angel left at the end...

I literally gasped when I saw Angel's empty spotlight.
I wished they would have used this one. It perfect. And a great nod to the play and theater itself

I’m grateful it ended the way it did. I feel like this alternate ending only would’ve worked in a theatre setting. Although I love the full circle moment of them coming back where they started with Angel popping in with them 🥺

I thought this was the original ending. I swear I remember this part when I went to see it with my sister at the movies, but that was so long ago. I’ll have to find the other ending to see if that rings any bells. 😂
The first half - where Mark plays his film - is the same. But when it cuts to all of them onstage, and Angel walks out, that’s where it deviates. On the DVD version I’ve always seen, it stays on the film and the last shot is of Angel. I’m interested to see if they changed it from the theater to the DVD tho!
This movie takes you on a scary rollercoaster ride. Sitting on the edge of my seat in anxiety and dread...The actors are amazing and talented and the story line was fascinating, not to mention the perfect ending. I will be watching this movie over and over...

I think I'd like this ending more if it was staged the way the Broadway version did it - where Angel doesn't appear until just before the final line is sung.
I honestly had to go back to see the original ending of the movie because it's been so long since I saw the movie. Although I do like this ending a little better I'm still not a big fan of the movie. If I need to get my Rent fix I'll either go to the last performance they filmed on Broadway or I'll just listen to the OBC.

I Hope that Anakin Skywalker's Ghost told at Ezra Bridger to stay alive with Ahsoka Tano After he kills Palpatine in Return of Jedi(but he gets saved by Knights of Ren) and Is that because Ezra and Ahsoka with Grogu will becomed the witnesses and the heir of Skywalker family After the Battle of Exegol Just like Angel told at Mimi to stay alive and marry Roger.
Jason David Frank too from Heaven told at Zayto the Red Dino Fury ranger and Koh the Red Ryusoul to stay both alive in the end

edit: I'm joking lol, this was the reason why the producers changed the ending, they think that people might be confused seeing Angel 'alive' again
Also this original spotlight version of the ending has Benny included, the movie removed some parts of Benny's song, esp the parts where he is in good hands with the other characters, thus the movie paints him as a villain with no redemption arc, so it will be off to see Benny singing with them in this finale (in the movie version, at least)

OK, let's not just leave it at that. Rent is originally a stage play, and at the end of it, Angel comes back and joins the other characters in singing the last song. That doesn't mean they're literally alive, it just means that their memory lives on beyond their death. The movie's opening with Seasons of Love and this ending are a nod to that: an addendum outside the movie's universe existing only for metaphor and emotional impact. I agree that the other ending works better in film.
