This is soo interesting thank you! I'm half black and half Italian and i have always been fascinated by the intersection of African American experience and the Italian American experience. I think the resistance to allowing both groups to assimilate is what makes both cultures soo strong. I am 4th generation Italian American and am still very much connected to the culture.

Such a rich history. So many stories from south philly alone about interracial dating and assimilation of Italians. Be it known that Italians learned racism as part of their assimilation. There was plenty of common ground and my favorite example is Louis Prima and his work with Jazz in New Orleans

I feel like this is why so many of us have lost the language in comparison to the Latino community and to be honest, it makes me sad. I grew up with the culture but not the language and I would have loved the opportunity to grow up bilingual. Now I have to struggle on the back side to learn what I can when it could have been natural

to be fair to your grandparents or parents, Spanish is the second most common spoken language here in the US and have enough numbers to make it much more useful. If Italians had the numerical ratio Spanish speakers have it would be a very different attitude, so there were macro forces involved in you not learning it. Plus its not taught in schools, youre much more likely to find Latin being taught than Italian.

Alberto in my village and area we spoke our dialect and only learned Italian at school ( in Italy) this is in the 60s. So Italians in the USA didn’t go there speaking Italian but their own dialects

Maintaining a language for several generations is actually a bad thing. The Latinos actually delay assimilation, put their kids at a disadvantage in education and the language is eventually lost anyway. It is simply delaying the inevitable for no reason but pride. The culture is eventually lost as well.
Ask any real Italian if they see Italian-Americans as Italians... They see them as Americans. You are fooling yourself if you think that you are "Italian" if you are a so called Italian-American... Just get over yourself and call yourself American. Welcome to the fold, drop the hyphen already.

I grew up in NYC. It just seemed like Italians didn't really consider themselves to be white but "Italian". Also when Italians and Sicilians immigrated to the United States some had to change their names to sound more Anglo Saxon and also assimilate. They assimilated so hard that they became Karen' and Ken's. Growing up in NYC was weird. So many different races, nationalities and ethnicities but can be racist af.

Notice that even in the lifetimes of many people alive today, Italian surnames tend to be replaced or minimized by people in the public eye. Madonna grew her fame without using her last name as did Lady Gaga...and even Tony Bennett shortened his name from Benedetto.
When actress Anne Bancroft won an Academy Award for her role in a 1962 film, she was using this stage name not her given name, reportedly Anna Maria Louisa Italiano.
Although some Italian singers entertainers and athletes became famous under their birth names, such as Frank Sinatra and Dion DiMucci, others such Dean Martin reportedly started life different names. Martin seemingly first tried the surname Martini to get away from the more ethnic sounding Dino Paul Crocetti.
Although there were Italian conclaves spread throughout the mainland US, many immigrants and their descendants did not spread from a regional concentrations in New York New Jersey in Connecticut and certain areas of Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Now many descendants are finding out why.

This professor makes a big mistake by believing that Italian identity did not exist before the unification of Italy. The sources that tell us that it did exist are numerous. The problem is that Italians were exactly like other European peoples: that is, divided into social classes. The rich and noble considered themselves culturally Italian and recognized other Italians, especially when they were in foreign lands, despite the fact that there was no unitary state. In contrast, the poor considered themselves to be from their own town or village.
The same thing happened in German-to-German relations.
Certainly, being Italian was considered a matter of culture, not race. There are no medieval or modern sources, prior to the 19th century, that assert an inferiority of southerners. There are invectives by citizens of one town against those of another, even within the same region.
Thus, the issue is approached by this professor with modern American spectacles. The bias is considerable.

On the other hand, discrimination against Italian immigrants in the U.S. was comparable to that against the Spanish or Irish.
The pseudo-racial issue was an excuse. The truth is that the dominant group was Anglo-Saxon (and Germanic in a broader sense) as well as Protestant. The Italians were not. Knowing how Protestants treated Catholics in Europe, one does not need to know much more. Just think of how the British government let the Irish croak, during the food crisis due to potato disease.

The people saying Romans were caucasian obviously do not understand the difference between culture and race. The everyday white anglo American is NOT an ethnic: not Italian, Jew, Greek, etc. Mediterranean people are gentically and culturally different from northwestern Euros as northern Italy considers us southerners like Ethiopia. Just look at the culture of Sicily, Saridina, and southern Italy. It is vastly different from the north and Germanic/Anglo cultures. Ya'll don't realize that Romans were Latins. Latins influenced Spain and Portugal made them Latin and then they influenced Latin America. This Latin and Roman heritage is absent today in Latin European countries as well as Latin-American countries and in fact if you want to know just how non Anglo-Saxon people from Italy are just look at the rate discrimination that Italians had in Latin America: Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Venezuela, Paraguay. It was close to none and that is obvious to anybody who understands Roman heritage and Latin mediterranean influence because Italians rose to the highest parts of society right away in LA bc they are of Latin heritage. They are Roman Catholics. They speak a Latin language and have Roman principles, values, and mores. Where as the average white American in North America was actually white Anglo-Saxon protestant and very different from mediterranean cultures. What that means is The driving force in white America card today mainstream America is definitely not Italian's nor Jews nor Greeks even if they are Caucasian by blood I mean there are Cubans that are Caucasian by blood and many all their Latin Americans so this argument doesn't prove validity. Because for some reason those groups are considered non white. The point is people from Italy have always had a different culture than predominant white America I'm sorry but Italians are just lumped into the white category because of politics. Socially they distance themselves from medegan culture and mangia cake culture. Think about it: white girls listen to country music, move out the second they turn 18, have more loyalty to their bf or friends than their family, eat non-ethnic food, etc. What Italian American girl or Italian girl is ever stereotyped like that? They're not. They are the mob wives, the mothers, the grandmothers, the fiesty ones, the flavor in food, all of the above. I'm sorry when I think of Rossella Rago, Laura Vitale, Chazz Palminteri, Alessia Cara, Jose Pesci, I do not think of white people. I think of ethnics. And If you genuinely disagree that I feel like you are in denial of your ethnic heritage and have forgotten your roots in this country. I call these Italian people sellouts.

When my grandfather came as a very young man in 1913 he was listed as "Race - Southern Italian" on his Ellis Island port of entry registration. When my grandmother came very late in life in 1952 she was listed on same registry a Italian. Today the sad fact (I believe) is that Italians no longer remember who they were, how they got here and how they were treated when they did; and the same goes for the Irish. Unfortunately they now do the same terrible things to the people who are coming here for a better life.

It is obvious that after the expansion of Rome not everyone was blond in Rome. It is important to note that Rome was an empire and you cannot compare it to a Celtic or Germanic tribe. Rome was an empire that expanded throughout almost all of Western Europe reaching the Middle East. Keep in mind that in a Roman legion 60% of the legionaries WERE NOT ROMANS, in a Roman legion there were people from the Middle East, Greeks, Germans, Slavs and Romans, many of them with the intention of acquiring Roman citizenship. Not to sow racial divisions, but after first learning the story of our treatment upon our first arriving in great numbers, i was horrified and in disbelief...and most of all furious...plus I felt deceived and like it had been kept a secret my whole life and that Italian Americans of prior generations want to pretend it never happened and erase the sub human label put upon us from history. The second thing i thought was the fact that some northern Europeans are so racist that they consider southern Italians (and Mediterranean people in general), literally one shade darker than northern Europeans, as suddenly in a subhuman category made it crystal clear how disgusting and warped that whole "pathologically white" northern European world view is...and what's sick is how many people of various ethnicities are desperate to be in the club, rather than to permanently destroy the whole paradigm! its sociopathic. its evil.
Tribalism is natural and innate, but I call racism "pathological tribalism". Its ultimately an incestuous world view. We are primitive creatures and we can choose to live either from the forebrain or the hindbrain. I dont believe we are born "non-racist" in a certain sense or degree as many well meaning people claim as tribalism is part of our DNA as humans, but a modern day human has to share the planet and cooperate and experience other cultures and consciously talk down the hindbrain from which the excessive and pathologic levels of tribalism stems. Its a process of healthy maturation to fully shed ones non pathological tribalism, but a very necessary one, especially in our highly interconnected modern human existence (this is much easier for someone of highly mixed parentage but possible for anyone) ...it is something that doesnt necessarily come natural to people who dont travel but it is something everyone should endeavor to do, and consciously work on it as part of being a good human being and practicing good social hygiene.
....and while all that may be true, we still must all find a way to keep our unique cultural identities in a future more multicultural world, but also ensure we teach our future generations to embrace and enjoy our differences (and to travel) so that we can finally become a unified species and ensure we can continue to maintain life on this planet. we need to work as one to protect our environment and end war for good...dehumanization of the enemy precedes every war in history so all war is ultimately tribal war. For if the two nations felt sufficient kinship they wouldnt be able to dehumanize them first which is necessary to motivate great numbers of men to view another group as deserving slaughter.

Are you equally upset that the white Irish were treated even more unfairly and seen as subhuman undesirables lower than the Black population? The Irish were seen as lower than the Italians and badly mistreated by the Italian-American community. Are you going to write several paragraphs about your disgust of the Italian-American treatment of the Irish?
I am just asking because the "whites" were in no way a unified group, they are only unified in the minds of other racial groups to claim conspiracy theories against the white boogie man.

My people were second class citizens and in many cases driven out of several areas because they were from the wrong country. Fast forward to now, the history revisionists now say how much power we had and how the system was built for us... BS!
My ancestors struggled, fleeing oppression at home and arrived penniless to even more oppression and struggle in the US. They didn't cry and moan about it, they just worked themselves to death to give a better life to their kids.

Well for the majority of the northern Europe originating white Americans, southern Europeans werent considered typically white and i believe they inherited these perceptions from Europe. Still till these days in Europe you can see how southerns are downlooked and this was more obvious when southerns immigrated in the north (Germany,Scandinavia etc). There are subdivisions in the white race (Meditarranean,Nordics,Dinaric etc) with the nordic race (blue eyes, blonde hair) being considered superior by some racist northern anthropologists.
