Good vid, but it should have been [s] and [z] (not /s/ and /z/) are in contrastive distribution, so that you were comparing like with like, and not being circular (slashes indicate phonemes which by definition are in contrastive distribution). Phonemes are the smallest *word* (not meaning) distinguishing unit in a language. Adding a rising tone in English changes the meaning of an utterance from a statement to a question. That does not mean that a rising tone in English is a phoneme, because it does not change any word into a different word.

In Spanish, [s] and [z] are allophones, as no Spanish word contains the [z] sound. This allophony is most common in the dialects of Colombia and the west of Venezuela
or in "mismo" 🙂
