- Former German Ambassador and former head of the Munich Security Conference, Wolfgang Ischinger, speaks to DW's Ines Pohl at the Republican National Conference. On the third day of RNC 2024, J.D. Vance gave his first speech as Trump's VP nominee. Vance comes from humble beginnings, yet gained success with the publication of his book "Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis", which recounts his upbringing in Kentucky and his family's adherence to Appalachian values. Ischinger addresses concerns that J.D. Vance will pursue an extreme position on various policy issues, given the incendiary and isolationist statements he has made throughout his career.

I agree that panic is the wrong response to Trump and Vance. However, Vance seems like a VP pick intended to be a successor. He is not a minor figure that most VPs are. Trump is term-limited and he would certainly like Vance to carry on his legacy. Adapting to the MAGA point of view will be necessary. The European political system has become ever more US-oriented, -obedient and -dependent, so this is being perceived as a crisis. Expect the 5 stages of grief.
Just like the German worry about thier country American worry about out of Control Subsidizing other countries...Nato nations need to step up with thier spending and stop taking advantage of American Tax payers..
