  • With 4 weeks post op I am walking again in my boot! SO EXCITING. My doctor recommended I get the EVENup shoe lift to use the next few weeks while I begin walking again which has been an interesting experience.

    Alexa, came across your channel again, just wanted to make sure to say thank you. At week 6-7 post-op, I was able to start walking no boot, and driving. Now at week 10, pretty much do everything.. heel lifts, walk at 4-5mph on the treadmill on an incline and contracting my calf really hard doing weighted heel lifts. Everyone tells me they can't see a limp, but I can feel it plus some minor swelling still... I've been training twice a day on the bike against heavy resistance..... honestly, your videos kept me so motivated and were very positive,......thank you!!!!!!!

    Hello Alexa, thanks for creating these videos. I was hooping and I fully ruptured my left achilles(upside is I can still drive). At first I was really down about the whole situation but after your videos, they really helped me feel better about the whole thing. I'm 5 weeks post op and have an appointment with my doctor in 3 days. My doctor said I can start walking on the boot a few days before my appointment. Did you feel any pain walking on the boot at first? How tight did you have the boot?

    • @HelloImAlexa
      @HelloImAlexa  Před rokem +1

      Awe so glad you found my videos and they have been helpful for you! Exciting that you will be walking again soon 🎉 I don't remember having any pain as I was walking. Maybe a little sore if I walked too much but the boot really protects it. I was most sore once the boot came off and I had to learn to walk again. I kept the boot tight enough so it wouldnt fall off but not too tight that it would be uncomfortable. I think you;ll be able to tell if it feels too tight and you can loosen it a bit. Wishing you the best! LMK if anything else comes up you'd want to talk through.

    Shoes are definitely something I want to treat myself to, but I think I'm going to hold out for the NoBull Neon Pink Trainer+ once they restock my size, and once I can wear those at the gym. However, a purchase I made early was dresses with pockets! I couldn't pull pants over my cast anyway, and I needed to carry at least my phone around. Then I got straps for my phone case and I wear it on my neck. Might keep that after, I've gotten really used to it!

    Hi Alexa,
    I am week 5 post op. How did you train yourself to put 50% of weight on both legs? Im trying to wean off the crutches, but mentally I'm so scared to put more weight on the injured foot. I'm still waiting for PT availability, but I just want to start walking without my crutches! I am so impatient! I just purchased the Evenup shoe leveler, so I am excited for that. Anyways, I love your videos and it's been giving me guidance

    • @HelloImAlexa
      @HelloImAlexa  Před 2 lety +1

      Hello hello! omg well congrats on getting as far as you have! Hmm trying to think back, I think because I was doing a lot of ROM throughout the day, my leg was feeling like it was starting to strengthen. It's definitely a huge mental challenge though 😣 When my doctor told me to just walk on my leg after 7 weeks post op I kind of just did it - very slowly of course but it somehow just worked all fine! I probably felt confident being in the office with him and the team as well.
      I also had to wait a bit to get in with my PT, I was so excited to start! It's so, so important to try and stay patient though as well. Since Ive been walking again around 7 weeks post op, the recovery has been SO SLOW. Like I can't even describe it. I heard people say how slow it was, but being in it is a whole other weird challenge.
      So glad you got the EVENup! I hope it works well for you 🙂
      I've got some more achilles videos coming again soon now that I'm about 3.5 months post op. Feel free to leave me any more comments if you have questions or want to connect.

    • @HelloImAlexa
      @HelloImAlexa  Před rokem

      Hi!! I'm so glad you found my channel as well. What I've learned is that there are so many different experience with this injury and surgery depending on which doctor you choose for the procedure and where you live in the world. Some people are put in a cast for a month post-op; while others like myself are put in a splint for a week and then a boot from there on out. Some people go have heel raises in their boot to control their movement and others (like myself) used a boot with hinges. That all to say, the road to recovery is a long one for us all and we may have different paths to get there but as long as we are working with our health care professionals, everything will work itself out. If you are concerned about rapid weight gain, I definitely recommend bringing this up with your doctor and see how they can help advise. I personally tried various ways to safely stay active during this injury and I did prioritize it. Feel free to leave more comments if you have any other thoughts or concerns but for now, I'm wishing you a smooth recovery! 💪

    I'm envious of your situation. I'm 4.5 weeks post-op, but still required by my Dr to be non-weight bearing until 6 weeks, then only partial weight bearing until 8 weeks post op. I have been doing range of motion PT (very limited movements just like you had). I started these at week 2 after my soft cast was removed, but I do not feel like my range of motion has improved much in these 2.5 weeks. Did you feel like your range of motion was slow to improve initially? Also, did you ever feel your operated tendon and it felt extra bulky and tight? I understand the tightness, which is why I don't have the flexibility, but my operated tendon feels like it's twice the size of the tendon in my good leg. They didn't need to borrow any tendon for my repair. Just curious if you had this experience, too. Thanks for these videos!

    • @HelloImAlexa
      @HelloImAlexa  Před 2 lety +1

      oh dang… yeah that seems like a lot of time non-weight bearing compared to me. It seems like more of the up to date protocol call for early weigh bearing but it's possible your tear was really bad and they want to make super sure that it's connected and healed before you put weight on it.
      The early ROM helped get me some motion but ever since I started PT at around the 7-8 week mark, it was clear my motion was VERY limited. The first month of PT was brutal. Learning to actually walk again and gain flexibility was a long road.
      Currently, my operated tendon is still quite bulky and has a lot of scar tissue around it. They didn't borrow any tendon for my repair either - from my understanding it's natural build up scar tissue since your leg went into emergency mode to try and protect it. It's a long process to get it back in order which I can tell will be a while for me. Hope this is helpful and so glad to hear the videos are helpful for you!

      Hey! I am also also partial weight bearing with the heel wedges and am finding the heel wedges decently painful. I almost feel like the wedges make it more uncomfortable because they are hard and not very "foot-shaped". I have three wedges and am removing one wedge every three weeks per the PT protocol. I found wearing a very thick sock did help though so you can try that. The more I work with weight bearing the more I get used to it and my PT told me that with each wedge getting removed it will become more comfortable. Something to look forward to! Just wanted to shoot you a message and let you know you arnt the only one having that experience. Good luck with your recovery!!

      Hi! So glad these videos have been helpful for you :) I honestly never walked with my boot and crutches. My doctor had me from non-weight bearing to walking with the boot, no in between.
      When I was walking in the boot I would step heel to toe as much as possible - that is the natural way we walk after all, it's just bulkier and a diff experience with a big boot on.
      Pain is typical throughout but if it becomes unbearable or you are uncertain I would definitely call the doctor and ask them what they think!
      No sure if that's helpful at all but hopefully some of it is. Wishing you a smooth recovery!

    Hello! Idk if you keep up on this, I am about 5 weeks post-op, right Achilles tear, playing basketball as well… and I am having a tough time trusting my Achilles/foot to even start walking without crutches in my boot. How did you get started? I feel like my foot feels weird when I put all my weight on it.

    • @HelloImAlexa
      @HelloImAlexa  Před rokem

      Hello! Yes, I do still check comments regularly :)
      Hmmm, well definitely don't do anything you don't feel comfortable with by yourself. For me, I walked for the first time without crutches in my boot with my doctor present in the same room as me. That's how I got started and then I walked out of my appointment and walked for the next number of weeks in my boot until it was time for that to come off and try walking without it.
      I recommend setting up another time with your doctor or a PT to have them guide you through this so you don't feel along and so you can ask them specific questions as it relates to your case. Hope that helps and wishing you the best!

    My name is Vasile. I ruptured my achilles tendon few days ago and i was thinking if i can avoid surgery. I have a complete ruptured tendon and my concern is that i will not recover 100% without surgery. What do you think? Can i recover without surgery?

      Hi there, I am not a doctor but from my understanding you can recover from a full rupture with and without surgery. There are different pros and cons to the two paths you could take so I recommend asking a medical professional about these two options and what they are. Wishing you a smooth recovery!

    Hi Alexa! I'm week 6 post OP and my experience has been a little different as I was just taken out of my cast today and placed into the boot. I wanted to ask you if it was hard or super stiff for you to first move your foot up & down (Waving motion) when you first had the cast removed?
    It's like I try to move it, but nothing really happens lol .I'm guessing it's because I was 6 weeks in the cast without any ROM

    • @HelloImAlexa
      @HelloImAlexa  Před rokem +2

      Oh dang… yeah mine was really stiff but I definitely was able to move it! I assume since your surgeon's protocol sounds much more conservative and had you in the cast for such a long time that your muscles have gotten much stiffer and have a lot of learning to do. Nothing you can't get better at with time! Hope that helps and wishing you a smooth recovery 💪

    Hey there Alexa, I’m curious to know if you had any wedges left in your boot at this point in time. I’m waiting to get cleared for full weight bearing at my 6 week ortho appointment (currently coming up on 5 weeks) and I’m not sure if I should be at neutral yet.
    TECHNICALLY I’m already there but just curious where you were at 4 weeks.

    • @HelloImAlexa
      @HelloImAlexa  Před rokem +1

      Hi there! I actually never had wedges. My boot had a gear system that would lock into place at the position I needed for healing. At 2 weeks post-op my doctor moved my boot into the neutral position which I believe would mean zero wedges for the sort of boot you're referring to (but I'm not 100% sure since I didnt use that kind of boot!).
      That said, I'd recommend asking your medical team before removing any wedges because they are monitoring your injury and have you on a specific protocol. You can always use my story to ask them better questions. Hope that helps!

      Random questions are fine! Not sure I remember a stinging feeling but it's definitely been consistently sore. Actually in the evening, my foot would get bothered and it would feel sort of numb and maybe it was sort of stinging from time to time. I thought it was from the blood pressure in my leg, I found when I would put my foot off the bed it would help make the feeling stop 😅 Anyway, I think a lot of it is totally normal, your leg just went through a lot! If you're worried at all def ask your doctor. Wishing you the best! LMK if there's anything else you want to chat through.

      @@georgiageocachinggirls2168 Hello, hello! Ahh shoot, sorry to hear that. I never had that issue with the EvenUp but yeah I ended up preferring using a platform shoe more instead. I would use my EvenUp just at home (so it was always clean) and then would switch into my platform shoe when going outside. I used both the EvenUp and my platform shoe/s during the full duration of wearing my boot while being cleared to walk. I believe this was from between weeks 4-8 post op (so about 1 month). This was per the protocol set by my doctor, It seems like people sometimes are in their boot longer than I was but I think you could expect a minimum of 1 month needing some sort of elevated support. Hope that helps!

      @@HelloImAlexa Ah I see about the adjustment function on your boot to lock into place a specific angle. So my 1st follow up appointment @ 2 weeks post-op, I actually met with a Physician Assistant. Wasn't my Dr that did surgery, The PA just said do ROM exercises, ankle pumps, and don't do anything too aggressive. I was disappointed it was just a very vague follow up plan. So I've just been searching on CZcams for rehab exercises. Definitely good recommendation to just reach out to them and ask if there's anything else I could be doing. I haven't been seeing PT yet. The Dr hasn't recommended one so far. My 2nd follow up appointment will be at 6 weeks post-op on 7/19/22. The PA stated at the time, I'll be able to walk without the boot and without crutches. I share about this is another one of my videos but I was walking with the boot starting at week 4 (this video) and then started walking on my own without the boot after week 7. For me, that's when I started PT (physio) and started to truly learn to walk again. You need to still be very careful once the boot is off so if you're around crowds of people you could consider wearing the boot a few weeks past during those times as well.
