I was 14 years old when i saw Tatsuo Susuki at a meeting in Birmingham.early 70s He did a kata and kicked through a 4inch block of wood. At that time it was amazing.
As a Shotokan karateka, who has fought a few Wado guys in his time, I can tell you for a fact that Wado Ryu is top shelf karate that is very effective. In fact I quite like the idea of not blocking hard but rather deflecting or redirecting the opponents power (in this case me) and hammering home a solid strike as a counter.
@@foxesruler it is a drill. in a drill every opponent is cooperative. even in boxing, muay thai or BJJ. if it is a free sparring session, then they story will be different.
@@foxesruler how else are you going to learn technique,s??? If you're trying to learn a martial art there has to be some cooperation between students, it's when you expect cooperation from a real attacker that's when you will run into some real problems, training in martial arts is really great, but when you train for self defense, that's different, self defense training has to be done realistic with the idea of a non cooperative creep of an attacker.
I was very fortunate to train with Master Tatsuo Suzuki and Sensei Kobayashi in this film back in 1969 at the tender age of 16 teaching was first class as was their patience respect was of the upmost importance the way we should all live by today
I think the reference to "Gramps" is incredibly disrespectful, but hey this is ignorance at its worst. I trained with Hanshi Suzuki several times and his technique was astounding. He knew when you were thinking about TRYING to kick him or punch him and he was the source of many outstanding instructors and practitioners. I have all of the videos from where this sourced...bought from Frank Johnson in Shrewsbury many years ago. Keiron Finney 5th Dan Wado Ryu
All of the Suzuki videos are amazing, not just as perfect examples of superb technique, but also as important historical documents. Many sincere thanks for this wonderful upload.
I enjoyed seeing that footage, thank you. I only had four days training with him on two separate courses in '79 or '80 in Northern Ireland (for AIKW/NIKW), but he was always fast and efficient with his movements. I also passed my grading on day two of one of the courses and he said, "You are very good" and patted me on the head... it took a week for the smile to come off my face and get back to reality... of course, I had to start training for another grading the following year. I'm now back at it after a 20 year rest and I've lost what little flexibility I had. Still love it though.
+Wado Ranger How did you get on with going back? I'm going back down my neck of the woods after a 25 year break. These days I've forgotten a lot of it but I could still cause some serious injury. To myself. Running for a bus. Or getting out of a low sofa. I think i'll start slow.
+Rob Wood thanks for your interest. I did fine. Managed to gain my 2nd Kyu which gives me a proper benchmark. Unfortunately I left the club after moving back to N.I. Not found a club as yet, but currently training for a mountain marathon. Well done for getting the motivation to start again yourself. Just get used to the sweating and pain of stretching and remembering techniques. Japanese words and phrases... they'll all come back to you. Good luck.
Remarkable techniques! Tatsuo Suzuki makes them all look so easy to perform and yet I still struggle with both Sokuto and Nagashizuki... Thank you so much for the upload! Stephanie
There are several techniques in Wado that use empi which are quite nasty. Just like any good tai fighter will tell you, using your elbow to strike someone in the face will end the fight. Teisho is also pretty effective too and Wado's employment of Shindo Yoshin Ryu in combination with these waza make it a practical form of karate.
wado ryu would be a kind of karate traditional MMA without leaving the budo values because it has strikes and kicks from karate, powerfull throws and ground techniques from judo and standing locks from jujutsu/aiki-jujitsu. I don't hace a wado ryu gym around but I would tove to
Interesting style. I did Goju for a while but from the look of it, Wado also encompasses JuJitsu and Aikido type principles. Also, looks much more close combat with some ground fighting. I could be wrong but what I've read up on it seems to indicate this. Looks like a balanced form of karate,
Somewhere, I've got some old Super 8mm film of Prof. Ohtsuka, Tatsuo Suzuki et al. at the Royal Albert Hall from the early 1970's - must look it up sometime and get out the old cine projector !
@ newburyg I don´t feel that it´s very similar to Kyukushinkai. Wado feels more flowing. I have always felt that the difference is that Kyukushinkai has more focus on power and less on agility. Maybe I´m wrong, but that´s the way they taught us in my country.
Thank you for showing this videos because I always interested in Karate's traditional sparring methods....I mean it seems karate resembles kickboxing and pugilism with kicking techniques added.
Sensei Rick Gertsen if you're watching this, thank you so much for teaching me Wadoryu Karate at JICK Waikamilo Dojo 1975-1977. Shihan Kiyohisa Hirano R.I.P. Osu!
With great sadness and with affection and a deep sense of gratitude O-sensei / Professor Dr. Tatsuo SUZUKI, Hanshi Geboren: 27 april 1928 te Yokohama, Japan - † 12 july 2011 London, England.
i been in martial art from i was 9 n i never heard of wado karate wow how much type of karate are there n gun fu? just heard of one too i never seen be4 wow so much i like this one need a school in nj
I wonder if there is anyone here who knows who Sensei's partner is ? It looks like Kobyiashi Sensei but as it is a little grainy I can't be sure. Kobyiashi is now back in Japan but was our Club Instructor whilst he was here.
@KaratesDisciple What an arrogant claim to make from a completely biased viewpoint... You should know that it is the martial artist that determines the efficacy of any art - It's not the song, it's the person that sings it. Oss!

The dynamic sparring drills are good, but like most of these demonstrated here are worthless, because the attacker is static and cooperates.
foxesruler That because these are Kihon pairs. They are set attacks and defence. They are to sparring what Bunkai is to kata.

Remember people "don't feed the trolls"
We already answered this guy, if he does disagree with us just let him away.

Arjay I agree, I think the naysayers probably never trained a day in their life and just want to troll/\.
