The thing the Wrights have never been given credit for is the invention of the modern propeller. They were the first to understand that a propeller blade is actually a wing in rotation, that needed a twist along it's length to equalize the lift (thrust) generated. This was invention touched with pure genius, and nobody ever mentions it. In fact, a modern propeller is 85% efficient. The first hand carved Wright propeller was 81% efficient. Mike drop.

An extraordinary and deeply meaningful tale. Mr McCullough was a philosopher as well as a historian and writer and we are the richer for his presence on earth. Few accomplish that.

The Wrights were unique in their truly scientific approach to flight. Everything from their wind tunnel, engine design and wing and propellor design were done in a methodical way others had never done.

Where is the credit to Gustave Whitehead who flew in 1901 in Bridgeport Connecticut to multiple eyewitnesses who signed affidavits? Another inconvenient truth? The replicas flew in Connecticut and in Europe near the museum to Whiteheads honor. There are photos of Whitehead in the air in his plane, Jane's Aviation credits Whitehead with his achievements, I even spoke to the Whitehead family who still live in Connecticut, and the Park Rangers at Kitty Hawk when I spoke to them privately told me they knew Whitehead flew before the Wright Brothers in a controlled, flight and Whitehead may have even flown as early as 1899.

I just finished reading this book and YT recommended this video....
How did it know, I don't know...
Anyways, it's a good book, relatively less propaganda, still pro American and pro Wright Brothers to some extent.
I think Wright brothers harmed American aviation, motivated French and Europeans to do more.
They did not invent airplane nor they did anything first.
The Wright brothers built a Porsche of airplanes at best, and Wilbur was a showman.
I hope David McCullough explained more about other aviators in France and Germany.
In order to make Wright brothers the inventors of airplanes, which they are definitely not, all other people in aviation at the time are erased from history.
America did nothing in aviation, although it had talents.
