    It is a story that an author wrote. Not every character is going to be like-able. It doesn’t matter if there the main character or not. I think author’s should be able to write characters however they want to write them. I think it’s a slippery slope if we start limiting how people can be creative and what characters can look like based on our own values and how we live today. If the author wanted his main character to be an a- hole then that’s up to him. Please don’t take offense. Not saying anything in a mean way.

      Totally understandable and the author does have every right to create whatever characters he wants. However, it doesn't mean I have to like them lol and it doesn't mean I cannot critique them. Especially in regards to language, sometimes problematic word choice can be completely unnecessary to the plot (as in this case). The author could have easily chosen to write him as an a-hole character without repeating the word 20+ times throughout the book/for no logical reason and in conjunction with mental illness terminology. It just served no purpose to me as a reader and to me shows that the author lacks a sense of social awareness, or cannot creatively write a horrible character without the use of this word.

    I cringe every time I hear someone use the r word. My grandmother would always say that people who cuss didn’t have a big enough vocabulary. I disagree. Cussing is pretty much a personality trait for me at this point and my vocabulary is vast. But if an author is going to write a 13 year old with a wide and understanding vocabulary then the frequent use of the r word goes against what the author wants you to think of his character and their intellect. Given, he’s still a 13 year old but those things seem to be at odds. I would have already DNFd and moved on, you’re way more dedicated than I would have been.

    I would have DNFed and taken some time off as well. I am starting the Year of the Witching… I’m reading a bit slower this time around. I am liking the book but still slow reader here lol

    Ugh I hate when that word is used!! I agree Target is lowkey expensive!

    Ugh, I hate seeing that word used in current books. I know that Stephen King used it in older books, so maybe this author is trying to tap into that. But quite frankly 13 year olds today know better than to use the r word. I’m a mom to a kiddo with Down syndrome, so I will call out people on the use of the word. It’s about respecting others. I hope your other books for the readathon are better!

      @bookskywalker8173  Před 3 lety

      Yes!! He is def. trying to channel Stephen King for sure but c'mon there are other ways to do that without that language!! ☹️ I also agree that many 13 year olds now, if brought up well, will know not to use. Thank you for your thoughts!!

    Hmmm I was interested in this book but there's no reason to use "retarded" as a slur. I had an aunt who was severely retarded and Ive no patience for that word being used inappropriately. Pass.

      Agreed! I'm still going with it and other than the problematic usage of that word, it's not a bad/problematic book as a whole but still could have def. gone without that language smh

      So it's not the worst 😭😭 it's getting better for sure! But could have totally gone without the harmful language 🙌🏼 and thank you ❤️
