It is a FIAT after all my family and friends had 2 renegades had engine and transmission issues at 70k miles and yes we maintain them well lol

Absolutely love my 2018 Jeep Compass 4x4. I have taken it on so many SoCal off-road trails and the four-wheel-drive system combined with 29” Perrelli AT+ tires have never let me down. I’ve gotten a lot of desert pinstripes though lol😀

Yes the powertrain is such a big oversight on Jeep's part that it is a deal breaker for me. The powertrain is really that bad!

I own a 2020 Compass Sport, and after it passed 7K miles, the engine really opened up with better acceleration and improved efficiency (reliable 32 MPG on flat highway). It has sufficient passing ability, and overall nothing to complain about. All it needs is oil changes every 4K miles to keep the oil from getting dirty; unclean oil will ruin the oil actuated VVT by 70K miles, but with proper maintenance, these 2.4L Tigershark engines are good for 200K miles.
I plan on getting an Outback just so I can do trails like this. Love your videos.

Your videos helped influence me buy this exact make/model/year back in March 2022. So far 15,000 miles im very pleased everything from the interior to its everyday road driving ability. Its made navigating some of the worst winter days in Michigan seem effortless with its snow mode.

I had 2019 Compass Trailhawk. Great little Jeep, explored Anza Borrego, Joshua Tree, etc. Did great. I had the Toyo Open Country AT3’s in 225/65/17 and the tires really elevated it’s performance. But my trip from Humboldt CA to near San Diego made me realize just how gutless it truly was. With the slightly bigger tires and all our gear, it just struggled so hard in the altitude and faster highway sections. I traded it in and actually made $1000 because of trade in values right now. I upgraded to a slightly older but low mileage 2018 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. No comparison. It’s 1000x better. And the funny thing is that I averaged 22 mpg in the compass mixed, now I’m seeing 18-20 in the GC, and I’m on true 32 inch Toyo AT3’s. So yeah, the compass is a cool rig, but it NEEDS a better engine! Thanks for the video.
I don't know. I own a 2020 Compass Sport FWD, and the engine feel good to me, especially after 7K miles - I felt the engine really started to rev better and provide better MPG at least on the highway. Passing power is sufficient, and I can honestly say I went from feeling underwhelmed by this engine at first to really liking it over time. Maybe it's because the Sport trim is almost 500 pounds lighter than the Trailhawk trim.
An amazing trip, would love to have done that. I sure like my 2020 compass trailhawk. More videos like this, ease. Enjoy, stay safe.

Titus Canyon is one of my favorite off-road experiences...there is nothing like it and how incredible it is. I did it in my F-250 and it handled it perfectly; it's a trail that needs high clearance rather than 4WD
Nice video. I think this is the appropriate level of soft road that CUVs should be able to handle, provided you have decent all terrains to help avoid a puncture, and a fullsize spare. A car could likely handle this, but would be a little more worrisome and should go slower, plus you can't really find all terrains for them
I did this in a slightly lowered classic impreza and the first part was incredibly slow. The middle part I had to really watch my line and I still scraped twice. The third part with the slot canyon was amazing.
Also, this is a one way road.
We saw a camry do it. So low to the ground.

Nice video :). I bought a 21’ Cherokee Latitude lux (though 2WD an with the 3.2l V6) a few months ago. It was not at all the car I was looking for…I was looking at the Tiguan and the Tucson Hybrid but they just weren’t available in the trim/model’s I wanted AND were 3-5k over MSRP. Was getting frustrated in my search and fell over the Jeep at 3k under MSRP (and it really was when I got to the dealer and no other bs), test drove it and bought it the same day. Also a lower trim than I was looking for but checked enough of the boxes of things I wanted. Have been very happy so far.
I love going to DV. Have been there on several trips on my Triumph T120 with a motorcycle group (Japanese vintage and SoCal Norton clubs), though I have skipped Titus Cyn when the adventure bikes in the group have gone that route… Would my 2WD Cherokee be ok on Titus Cyn (assuming no rain/recent rain and good general weather and road conditions) or would I be pushing my luck? When I have had this one a few years I will probably trade it in on a higher trim 4WD version.
Jeeze, I'm just curious how many weeks out of the year you're away from home base. Seems like a lot of adventures in your job.
According to my hotel rewards account I spent 136 nights on the road this year. That’s not counting all the hotels outside of network. So probably close to 180.

The compass has a adaptive suspension... well kind of. It’s a “frequency selective dampening “ suspension with a off road tune. So it should be excellent over washboard while it adapts to the bumps. Made me kind of sad you aired down I was interested in seeing how it would do. Chrysler also uses a version of it on the dart GT it’s a adaptive suspension with a sport tune. The Fiat 500L has a Koni branded version. Fun fact Ferrari uses a shock from koni that’s frequency dampened as well.

Do you think there’s anything on this trail that required the off-road features of the compass? Could I do it in a RAV4? I didn’t see any glaring obstacles so far in the video, but I’m curious.
RAV4 would be great. Just make sure you have a good spare if you catch a random rock.
Granted it's not the hot season, but 2 liters really isn't that much water. I grab a gallon or 2 or from the supermarket and throw them in the back when we go on anything longer than a day trip.

It just hasn't been updated in a long time. When it gets updated, we might buy one.
Would an AWD HRV be a more reliable option for "mild adventures" like this one? Would an HRV be able to do the previous video climbing a mountain trail?
Would love to get 200k miles over 10 years on the next vehicle. Not sure if the smaller jeeps (see: fiats) are up to the task.
The HRVs AWD is poor by comparison. Not good enough for the Tahoe climb. Also HRV has street car ground clearance. The underside would be thrashed.
Shocks/struts, whatever it has, held up on the washboard?

I have a satellite communicator. AAA probably wouldn’t come out that far, but someone in my office would call around and get a truck to rescue me.

Do you think the Kia Seltos would be able to handle this road? I’m planning a trip out to California in October and would love to come visit this spot! Also is there any spots with soft sand or is it mostly solid ground? I got myself stuck in sand before and that wasn’t fun…
The Kia will do fine. The suspension will be on the stepside. And definitely watch for any errant rocks. But if you take it slow you’ll be fine.

Great video. IMO, one of your best. The scenery made me homesick. I used to live in Mesa, AZ and my past time was solo desert exploration in my modified 1978 Cehvy K5 Blazer. Man, I miss the Western US.

Awesome location - how were you able to fly a drone as this entire area is inside the National Park where drones are banned.
Video production trick: All the drone shots were done outside the park no-fly zone. (Not actually in Death Valley, but close enough to have similar terrain.)

I spent a few hours. Filming takes 3X longer than normal.
I have a question and this goes for anyone reading this. I am a college student looking to get a 4x4 Midsize Truck or SUV. Currently I have a 2015 Dodge Dart that I’m looking to trade in. Just wanted to get different opinions. I also live in the PNW

Is deflating the tires necessary if you go a little slower?
No. Road was easy. Only deflate if the rocks are sharp or you need more grip.
@@drivingsports my Pilot has 21 inch relatively low profile (stock). I'm about to go there and attempt it. Wondering if my wheels will be a problem.

You know what they say: "The best off-road vehicle is a rental."
Probably a European driving the rental Altima. I had an Italian Grandmother as a kid. She would take me there in the summers often. Her family owned an olive farm. I saw people drive small fiats and golfs down dirt roads that an average American would think they needed a Raptor / TRX to get down. Of course this was in the 1990’s, when even Camaros and sports cars had wider sidewall tires (and in some cases ground clearance) than most of the SUVs we have that now ride on 19, 20, and 21’s.
In Brazil, we have the version gasoline with a 1.3 turbo 177 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque, with acelerations 0-62 in 9.3 secons. Hes a much faster vehicle, but is only FWD. For a 4WD, we have a diesel with 167 hp and 260 bl-ft of torque, more compatible with off road.
The Garmin Inreach is a great product. My wife and I have had one for several years. About tires and rims. I believe that you cannot use the wheel nuts for alloy rim on the spare with a steel rims. My 20 Tundra had a tire with a defect and I told the dealer to put on the spare as a temporary solution until a replacement came for my alloy rim. They put wheel nuts on for a steel rim. I had never thought about that. Now, I have five nuts in a bag 🎒 in my truck if I need to use the spare.

How fast can you drive in 4wheel drive in these?
It's all-wheel drive. No limit on speed since it will just disconnect power to the back if it needs/wants to.

Every time there was a truck in front of me doing 50 in a 75. Which was pretty regular. But 3,600-mile road trips aren't the common use case.
Let's be honest, any SUV can do this road, no need for the trailhawk in particular. That's the roads I like, perfect for easy family trip.
