There is so much happening in this scene, in this whole movie actually. There is so much that Harry wants to say, but can't. He can't because he knows that if he is honest with Francis or Diane, his words would sting them, wound them. They are free to wound him, but he must walk on egg shells. So he instinct says its time for him to leave, he is very uncomfortable. What is really happening here is that Harry doesn't really value women's accomplishments. The physical is all that matters. Harry is accomplished, very successful, so he doesn't need women to bring anything to the table beyond youth, hotness, and perhaps fertility. Their education, their money, their career, none of that adds any value to Harry such that he would want to be a "part of that." That's the truth Mia. But he can't say that because that is too "on-the-nose", too accurate and hurtful. The feminist studies professor might never get over that reality. Men that chase much younger women don't do that for interesting conversation. If men want to have interesting, challenging, intellectual conversation, they have it with other men when they do NOT have to walk on egg shells in their communication. Harry is not given that comfort at this dinning room table. So the only thing the three women bring to the table that Harry values, Amanda Peet has it with youth and fertility. The other two, nothing.

I still don't get over the disappointing ending on this movie. How could she choose him over the doctor???!!!! Sure, maybe they had great sex once, but there was nothing else to that. Chauvinistic womanizer turns into a sweet, faithful, family man, directly into a grandfather. Ugh. No. Soooooo disappointing.
Asking a women her age is like asking a man, when is he going to retire. Her value goes down, when her beauty fades. His value goes down, when he becomes less productive.
@chronicreader Exactly! Plus let's face it, if you are an older woman and you had the chance to have a fling with Keanu rather than saggy old Jack, well, let's face it, Keanu would win hands down!
@@whutdafeq1715 You may believe that, but not even the director of the movie does. Please listen to the monologue of Frances McDormand's accomplished women studies professor again. It is all about how men should! Should! ABSOLUTELY SHOULD! care about that.
Except the fact it's 2021 and men are obsolete. We don't need you for anything. You actually have to earn *our* respect now. And not many men can do that. Lol.
@@DonP-gf5hn Lol. Most married Women aren't happily married, as opposed to married men... I wonder why. In fact, single, childless, Women are the demographic who are actually the most satisfied with their lives. Also, the highest rates of homelessness (in Aus at least) are divorced/widowed Women over 55, and they usually have the added responsibility of dependant children, as well.. That's not a coincidence, so, maybe if you spent less time trotting out tired, sexist tropes, and actually looked up the stats, you'd have some vague idea what you're talking about. And Women have far more options available to them now than the archaic, two-category-only sexist stereotype of either "happily" married, or "Spinster /Cat lady". Lmfao. Go read a book, JB. Watched this movie for the first time last night. The feminist Aunt university professor is one of the reasons why now university enrollment is on the decline. Teaching useless subjects such as women’s studies. This may have seemed “edgy” back in 2003 when the film was made. Today we’re reaping the rotten fruit of these ideas.
Frances Mcdormand gives a great speech and the chemistry between Diane and Jack is magical! I could watch it all day!!
Love Francis small roll perfect like she is
JÚNTATE CONMIGO !!!!!!!
Frances McDormand really showcased how to make a tiny scene so memorable. Even her wink was brilliant. She is an amazing actress.
