On the first episode of Car Trek Series 8, AutoTempest challenges the guys to find three of the burliest, most obnoxious gas guzzlers they can buy, for less than the price of America's favorite electric vehicle, the Tesla Model 3. Freddy brings out his inner boomer with a Chevy Corvette Z06, Tyler's childhood fantasies come to life with a Dodge Viper SRT-10, and Ed's cheap Bugatti Veyron dreams are realized with a Bentley Continental Supersports. They are then tasked with racing around Atlanta Motor Speedway, which is a bit scarier than it sounds.

I’d love to see car trek do a cannonball run. Red ball garage to portofino in some goofy cars, maybe with some built in challenges along the way. Maybe buy a car on auto tempest, do a cannonball, then sell your car upon arrival, and whoever goes the least negative wins. That’d be pretty neat.

Ed never ceases to amaze with his uncanny abilities to find some ish'd wicked car for super cheap...
He picks cars that depreciate insanely fast and seems to buy them right when their value takes a huge hit. I've seen cars very similar to the ones he picks (same make/model, + or - 2 years in age + or - 10K on the odometet) for around the same prices he pays for them all the time jusy browsing around, its the only reason why i know hes not full of BS on most of the cars he picks.

The Corvette actually could get 30mpg if you are just highway cruising
It's also the only one of those three that didn't have that tacked into it's price as new. None of the c6z's we're subject to the gas guzzler tax. So while I understand the title for the series, the Z doesn't fit the bill. It's easily the best car there imo (I had an '06 Z). Miss that thing.
Would average near 26.5 combined on my 50 mile San Diego traffic commute with my Z06.

As a c6 zo6 owner I can confirm it gets really good gas mileage, same for the c7 they get up to about 24-26
Buddy has a c6 grandsport we made 34 highway pretty consistently
In my GS i can average around 40 on the Highway at times

18 miles is inexcusable. Driving my 20 year old truck like a bat outta hell I still get 14 miles to the gallon, so I bet I could go further on that track at full speed with those guys and a gallon and a half of gas than that tesla did with those given conditions.
@@mpmd6.9 I agree that is unacceptable, put your foot down and do 100+mph for 10 miles and the battery would be over half empty... serious range anxiety would kick in...
@@mpmd6.9 problem is, with only one and a half gallons of gas it would slosh around in the fuel tank and not be fully usable, especially on those banked turns.
regen turned off for safety in the wet and they wouldn't of been using the brakes on that track anyway.
also driving on the hwy if you drive smoothly, back off and coast down slight hills vs relying on regen to maintain speed the car can travel more miles from a charge

as a Viper fanboy, I agree with you 100%. Those Corvettes are super fun, and if you don't want to go crazy on the throttle they really aren't super uncomfortable compared to the Viper

It is pretty bad, but i'm sure the top being down didn't help and being in front. It might make a difference which side the fuel pickup is on since the banks are so steep. the 2008 Vipers with the larger 8.4L 600hp engines were rated for 22mpg highway in the coupes

Good choices and perfectly fitting. Z06 is the "Safe bet" - all-around performance, but quite dull and pedestrian. The Viper is all flash, not very fast and will probably kill you. The Bentley will break down by the end of this series.

The viper is pretty fast in the hands of a proper driver. What makes it slow is timid driving which you really can't blame anyone for haha

@@lambokiller9970 That viper has 450hp, no traction control and no driver assists. The Corvette is a warmed up 600+ HP, and the Bentley has 650. The viper is the slowest of the trio, and the most dangerous to drive fast.

Awesome video, greatly enjoyed as always. But I’m confused about how the range of a Tesla at full speed is relevant to the range of a single gallon of gas in these cars driving as efficiently as possible. Surely the Tesla would go farther going slowly?

Top Gear BBC did a test like this back in the CHM days, with an M3 and a Prius. Although here it wasn’t stated (or probably intended), the underlying idea was that driving styles have a bigger impact on fuel economy/range than the fuel type alone

I was talking with a Model 3 owner on the weekend and they left their phone in the sun in a vehicle. It got so hot that they couldn't start their Tesla. They had to put in the fridge to cool it down first.
@AutoTempest Ian - interesting. I wonder if they had the cabin overheat protection turned off. Usually that prevents things from getting too smoking in there. Although I guess if you leave a phone in direct sun it'll get pretty hot even if the air isn't too bad. I have had the phone NFC key thing not work a couple of times, but if you have internet you can use the app as a backup. -Nathan
Great episode guys. Now you do have me wondering where the fuel pickups are in your tanks, especially when in the high bank, and if they would have gone farther on flat ground.
Was thinking the same thing the whole time during the "test". I put test in quotes because it wasn't a controlled test or done with any sort of accurate measurments.

This is great! My only complaint is you were trying to compare gas guzzlers to the tesla when you ran the tesla on full power and the gas guzzlers at 55mph
yesss. i thought i was the only one. don't get me wrong, i hate teslas. but that did seem unfair. i love the unplugged tesla model S Plaid tho. 🤩
It is a bunch of homers with no real respect for a better design or idea, clinging to their ice vehicles with everything they can muster. If you could build a car that can go 5 times as far with the same energy used and called it gasosheen, you all would jump on that bandwagon!! Call it electric and it is the worst thing that ever happened. You all don't make any real sense.

You do not care about what makes cars cars, have wildly arrogant and fact-suspending ideas about saving the world, and are perfectly fine buying a shockingly expensive car that cannot take you anywhere far reliably without you spending hours and hours waiting to refuel. If you aren't a car guy, why are you watching a video about cars made by car guys?

In as much as I love you guys, you didn't exactly make that challenge very fair. What you should have done is rocketed around the track at 120MPH like you did in the Tesla and see how many laps 1 gallon would actually get you. Y'know level playing field and similar variables. That being said, blowing your wad in a Tesla will get you 1970's era EV range, where even a eScooter will get you farther. Now if you were driving the Tesla at 55-70, y'all would be there all night bored to tears. :P I'm an EV fan, but not really a Tesla fan, newer entries are making Tesla seem a bit dated.
So 1 gallon of gas is equal to a full battery charge on aTesla?
@@OneOut1 you can't compare at those speeds. they would need to drive at the same speed.
A fully charged tesla will do something like 300 miles at those lower speeds. I bet those super-cars wouldn't.
So happy to see a quality trio keeping this going. I hope to see certain youtubers come in as new or special guests to the show! Would be so cool to see DDE or something invest some time into a series with the team here :)
What a fair comparison! Flat out driving compared to going as gently as possible and drafting one another. Minimum efficiency of one compared to the maximum efficiency of the other. So fair!
