What really knocks me out of comparison spirals is when I find myself (a 25 year old woman) comparing myself to a teen or preteen and wishing I could have their legs or whatever. I literally get so shocked at myself and then I just get angry. I get angry at a world and a mind that has made a prepubescent body the "ideal" or something to strive for, and I get so mad for that little girl that I'm looking at and how unfair it is that she has to grow up in the same fucked up world I did. I find anger to be a great motivator in recovery. Sometimes when things are tough the thing that motivates me the most is thinking of eating as a giant middle finger to all the people and companies that make literally BILLIONS of dollars convincing people to hate themselves. I don't always comment but I always watch and I just want to say thank you so much for making this content and your IG content. It's helped me more than I could ever say. All my love to you and yours x

Dear Meg, I'm so grateful that you're making these videos despite going through grief. You're so brave and I can imagine that it would be so tempting to turn to ED behaviours to froze your emotions. Seeing you taking care of yourself, nourishing yourself properly, being kind to yourself is so important for me personally. I'm also going through hard time in terms of rejection by someone that I still love. I feel like I'm torn into pieces. And I did slip back into ED behaviours which make everything even worse. Surely it doesn't help. Now I have to go back to recovery, which scares me. If someone reads it, please, don't let even tiny ED behaviours creep in. Because it will snowball like shit. And you will have to go through recovery once again.
It touched me when you said that we have to take care of ourselves and wait it to pass. I hope it will pass...
Thank you Meg for sharing your psychotherapist's tips. I have watched you both on MEEDA channell. She is truly amazing. CBTE is still very rare. GOOD FOR YOOOOU!! So proud of you for that, it's such a hard thing to do, but so important. Just remember, you can't look at those clothes in isolation. There was a whole life which existed around them, and I'm going to guess it was a pretty small and food obsessed one. So picture the full life when you think of those clothes. Our brains can trick us to thinking we'd be 'so happy' if we fit into things which are smaller than our natural size, but in reality we wouldn't be at all. We would have an equally small life and existence, and a brain saturated in thoughts of food. Keep reality punching yourself in the face if you find it hard. And a big well done from me xxxx

@@kaylesandbean A really good podcast is 'don't salt my game'. Have you listened to it? The latest series is really good, she's reviewing her book (with guests on) called 'How to just eat it'. I haven't read the book, but the podcast is really good. It covers body acceptance, breaking food rules, and also how there is so much more to health than a number and so much more to food than the nutritional value (how it is part of social, emotional, financial and mental health). Are you getting any help from any medical professional with eating disorder training? It's so important to be able to look at your life and lived experience holistically (beyond a number), like you're trying to do. Restriction and rigidity around food is never going to be healthy for you and your lifestyle and happiness. Some one specialist should be able to help you as an individual, and not as a number xxx

Thank you megsy. Never is this more true than when for years we see actors and musicians etc in the media and world who are held up as 'the ideal', only for them to talk years later about the immense pressure that they were under to be a certain size and were put on strict diets and exercise regimes which made them miserable. Or they open up about having had an eating disorder. Suddenly the reality comes to light that to be in a body that is not naturally one's personal healthy body: so much torture and time and energy is diverted away from what one really values and one's true calling and life. @@megsyrecovery191 yes! I heard that. In makes me sad and upset that possibly young fans are feeling there is something 'wrong' with them because they aren't the same shape. Feeling faulty in some way, when in fact it is like a sprinter beating themselves up for not being as fast as another, thinking they are not good enough, when the competition are actually damaging themselves by secretly taking performance enhancing drugs due to the immense pressure on them to basically be Superhuman?! I don't know if that comparison works at all. And in some ways I hate even talking about the size and shape aspect of EDs because they are not fuelled in most case , by anything to do with that (more likely trauma, anxiety, lack of self worth and many other complex underlying issues). But, then, there is such a pervading problem with self worth balancing on appearance unfortunately. A bit like 'EDs are not about the food', but equally, food and eating IS a huge aspect of the illness that needs addressing, too.?!?!? I don't know. I'm going to shut up as I'm not very good at articulating things and don't want to say anything that may be wrong or misguided. Lots of love 💘 xxxxxx

I loved this topic you talked about. It's sooo true...comparing just overall drives us insane...it's like we are wanting to be like this other person (like you said) or better than them. It's sad because we don't appreciate any of the great unique qualities that we already have, we don't appreciate the physical features we have which ARE great...at least I like to think so. Thank you for saying this, it was very informative, helpful, motivational and truthful (realistically). Also I really love how you incorporate pretty much in all your videos not just the educational/supportive talks but what you do/eat/experience... throughout your day as well as adding cute-sy clips with your babies. I'm soo happy how far you have come. Your experience, I know, has helped you realize all the sh** others don't realize are doing or saying (low calorie dieting, excessive exercise, promoting unhealthy things, saying triggering things...) Not to say you deserved to have an ED but that's how I kind of picture my life this far... However, lovely talks, amazing foods, I adored those cards too and great vlogging of your day and your love ones 👏🐾🥊🕊️🖤👍😊plus, I do still like that song you put in 😂

I love your tip to choose 3 other people to look at when we are obsessing on one. I definitely, subconsciously choose the most “perfect” bodies to compare myself to. I also think remembering that people are so much more than whatever physical attribute we are choosing to focus on is helpful. Their lives are not perfect. I try to use your body neutrality idea for other people as well as for myself . Bigger, smaller, rounder, straighter bodies are not better or worse, they just are.

I cannot express how grateful I am each time I see you post new content! In your earlier videos, I know you used to set up your laptop and watch recovery-positive videos whilst eating - you’ve literally become that for me (and countless others, I’m sure)! Breakfast with Meg is now a thing 😂 ❤️ Such a helpful video - you have such a gentle but clear way of communicating advice, and it really resonates. I’m very early on in my recovery and am at a stage where I compare myself to severely underweight people in the street (on the occasion I see them)/Instagram, and struggle with that awful competitive “but I need to be sicker than her to recover” crap. I’m going to try to hold your advice in my head, so that when I next see an individual who really should be in hospital, I’ll try to eject the DVD there and then as really, “being thinner than her” doesn’t validate my sickness, nor does it make my recovery more acceptable, and try to step back and clock three other people to remind myself that this is the REAL world, that this is what I want, and that a terribly sick, small body brings with it a terribly sad, small life.
Anyway, thank you for your wonderful content. I find the snippets of food you show throughout your day SO helpful for recontextualising what normal eating actually might look like - but I love that you balance it with actionable advice and life/talking segments. You mentioned on Instagram you’re having a tough time today, so imma send you a virtual hug through the screen - please know that you bring so much light to so many ✨❤️

Bodies don’t exist in isolation. & a weight suppressed body will mean a whole host of shit (cold, food obsessed, isolated, disconnected, trapped in your own thoughts of food etc...). What do you want from life? I’m sure it extends beyond a certain body type 😘😘😘

Thank you for this video, I struggle with comparing a lot! I notice I always zoom in on people's legs and if someone's really thin I just assume they also have an ED and compare myself to them to see who's "sicker", which I never win (binge eating is a big part of my ED so I've never lost a drastic amount of weight). I have no idea what's actually going on in their life, they might have cancer or a drug addiction or something that has just made them lose their appetite. I really like the saying "different bodies different paths". I kind of use it as a mantra whenever I get stuck in comparing.

I completely agree with not showing full day of eating! I am on a meal plan that is individualized for me and MY body, and feel it would be irresponsible to show everything in an entire day. I still show some of what I eat (because I’m a human who eats EVERY DAY😊) but there are times my meal plan is increased and times when I temporarily decrease it (like now - I just had surgery and am nauseous, in pain and trying to manage things medically) ONLY while watched closely by my dietician with the goal to get back to 100% of my meal plan ASAP. I am looking forward to being able to eat intuitively, but for now I trust my team to know what my FDOE should be more than what my ED tries to convince me it should be! Bodies change over time, too. The “perfect legs” someone has today won’t look the same in 5 years. I’m well over 30, and I can envy the legs (or whatever body part) of a 20 year old, but mine are never going to look like that no matter how hard I try to force them. There’s a good chance (sadly) that the person we compare ourselves too won’t be entirely happy with themselves either x

Aww Meg thank you so much for this video. I have really missed your helpful, sensible, factual Ed recovery advice instead of just 'what I eat in a day' recovery CZcamsrs (don't get me wrong, they are OK and have their place, but can lead to more unhealthy comparison)
Omg, you've literally just said exactly what I just wrote!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bertie is such a cutie!!! Must be a comfort and distraction for you with everything that is going on and you have been through.
I loved the 'Mr Potato head' analogy!! 😂 It's so true!!!!
I do feel like lockdown I has helped me be less bothered about how I look /what other people look like as I really want to look at myself and others through an emotional lens and am more focused on making sure I feel OK mentally and emotionally and they are OK emotionally. I just want to be a kind and caring person really which is more important and will make me happier than being any particular way. Also us all wearing less makeup and wearing more casual. I think generally people are less focused on others luckily!!! (I don't feel as judged)
Haha you are like me in describing things as a shit show!! 😂😂😂 It describes stuff perfectly!!!!
Great to see you acing the cheese toasties these days 💪❤️ I remember you challenge and repeating them, lolllll. Bless you. Such an inspiration. That's not to ignore that you still have your own shit to deal with but the way you persevere is just admirable, like doing the painting instead..... As you say. Distractions don't always work but still better to try than do something self destructive.
Take care Meg, enjoy the rest of your weekend and have a good week.

Comparison is something I have always struggled with but after years of repeating this behaviour I now just look at others and think - 'you do you - i'll do me , im my version of me and everybody else is taken!!' - Finally regaining my personality which comes with focusing on the important things and the most beautiful thing is nobody even cares how we look , apart from our own minds!

    • @megsyrecovery191

That’s such a good activity to have done, did you take in a lot of diversity? What about thinking of the people you love most in the world, & then listing out what it is you love about them. They may be thin people, they may be fat, but I bet their size will be irrelevant to your lists, & you’ll focus more on their personality, kindness, sense of fun, compassion etc.... That can be helpful in recognising what you really value in people (& yourself) & that it’s not weight & shape. Also a good podcast is ‘don’t salt my game’. It’s a bit more diet related but it does have some good body stuff. & looking into body neutrality helped me 😘😘

I still automatically think that when I see other people, and then I think ok cool, they're not me. Now let's get on with me.... Not to trivialize it, but they don't have my body, genes or history, so any comparison is actually pretty irrelevant for me, because I'll only ever be me. I don't mean that to sound too basic or flippant, and I realise I am saying this with a naturally thin body type myself. But I really hope that whatever my body I would apply this thinking, because it can free you of so much impossible and invalid expectation. My massive tip here would be to stop treating your food like something to balance / save / compensate / calculate / allow / make up for etc..... Can you try and get yourself onto a regular eating schedule? 3 meals, 3 snacks, which are filling and satisfying. Rather than eeking and spreading calories out (because that can feel like food dominates your whole day). Plate your food, make sure you're properly portioning it (not grazing), and sit down to consciously eat it. If I eat 'extra snacks' (for example my family always eat crisps when cooking dinner) I make sure I don't compensate for that later or before, because I want to break that belief that food is an equation. I want to be able to join in, eat 'more', not feel compelled to count and balance food etc.... so at some point you have to break that cycle. Yeh I would say big things I did around this are structuring my meals and snacks, and allowing 'going over' as a natural part of being human and not then compensating for it. That seems like a really chaotic response, I hope some of it makes sense? xxx

Another fab video 😍 the difficulty I have is that we all know primatively, and historically for reproduction, that a certain body shape is attractive. You are lucky that you have equally proportioned torso and legs and gain weight mainly evenly/lower half. I however have a short torso so fat gathers there, and basically gain bugger all on my lower half. If I had a cute little bit of belly fat but also a nice waist and hips/ weight a bit more evenly distributed this would all be much easier to accept...

Not to just promote my own videos (🙈) but I kind of spoke about this in my previous video, in that I try to focus on body neutrality, & radically accepting my body in favour of a full life (which I need a healthy, natural body size to live). It’s kind of moving the focus away from the body, and onto the life if enables. As a concept I’ve found it amazingly helpful 😘😘
