Funny you always hear all he CZcams warriors making jokes about the other nation's aircraft, etc, but the guys that actually have to go out and _fight_ the damn things keep a certain healthy respect, because they are aware that an Su-22 can kill you as quickly as any plane. The reason America has had so much success in air combat is not because our aircraft are magic. It's because of excellent pilot training, and an extremely extensive (and expensive) support system of refueling AC and AWACS, ECM, the works. Most of our "aerial victories" could have been won just as easily using an F-4 Phantom, or worse, since the radar support and tactics were the main ingredients in the victory. For all the bragging, there weren't many cases were the aircraft actually had to "dogfight". They were vectored in by AWACS and popped a missile into them.
Also the MiG-15 was an excellent match for the Sabre in Korea. Like justforever said, it's not the horse, it's the jockey in cases like the MiG/Sabre. In a mis-match between the F-4 and Mig-21, I'd want to be in the smaller, harder to spot plane, if I was in close quarters. At long range, I'd take the Phantom. Nothing wrong with either plane at all, just have to play to your mount's strengths and I would rather reach out and touch my opponent before it became a dogfight. (Although for planes I would rather fly if I were in Vietnam, I would say the F-8.) As for the Fitters in the video, GREAT footage. Can't wait till Poland retires them so maybe one or two will get on the civil register here in the States so I can see and hear one up close.

The Su-22M4 really is not an bad ground attack jet. For an jet first built in 1969, it’s still quite fast at Mach 1.51. Besides being an frontline bomber and an close air support jet, I don’t see any other use for it. It’s too outdated for air combat and reconnaissance, but it still has more then enough capabilities to be used as air support or ground attack jet for infantry. The Su-22M4 is capable of firing laser guided bombs, TV guided bombs, and drops satellite guided bombs, so what more do you need as an ground attack jet? 12 hard points, with an 4,000kg payload, for 2 drop tanks extra fuel will still leave the Su-22M4 with enough carrying weight and hard points to carry around 4 laser guided missiles or four 250kg bombs. That’s good enough to fight off terrorists or enemy ground troops. If it’s not broken, then there’s no need to replace it in my opinion. It can be upgraded with modern avionics, ECM, sensors etc, and the Su-22M4 would be an very effective air support aircraft for any ground troops needing air strikes to suppress insurgency. There’s no need to build an entire new jet when you can easily upgrade older jets as frontline bombers. I wished the US would do the same thing and upgrade some older jets instead of wasting money. There is nothing wrong with upgrading and modernizing older F-4, F-14, F-5, F-111 to be used for today’s combat missions as long as it can drop JDAMs and fire hellfire munitions. These older jets have more then enough capabilities to destroy the Taliban. An good and successful example of modernizing and upgrading older aircrafts for modern day use would be Russia. Russia upgraded their older Su-25 and Su-24 into the Su-25SM3 and Su-24M2, and they are more effective at destroying ISIS and al Qaeda terrorists then the entire US “coalition” is. Russia did the same thing with their tanks where they upgraded 105 T-72 into the T-72B3M for $25 million dollars. $25 million dollars would not even buy you 3 US-made Abram tanks. Would even 3 Abram tanks be able to defeat 105 T-72B3M tanks that can all fire all the modern ammunition the T-90A/AM and T-14 Armata can? The T-72B3M uses reactive armor from the T-14 Armata too. There’s no way 3 Abram tanks can survive against 105 T-72B3M. 3 US Abram tanks with shitty tank crews wouldn’t even survive against 3 well trained and experienced T-72B3M crew members. The US needs to stop wasting money on stupid shit
Well, the T 72 B 3 still has trouble penetrating a modern NATO MBT at a distance and NATO tank crews are often better trained than conscript crews. The russian were more efective in Syria than Nato because they care less for colateral damage... see the videos and you see using lots of dumb bombs and rockets pods, even from SU 24s. So less worry on getting a army of lawyers and PR people to approve a target who might has moved in the meantime and no need to use a 800K superduper smart missile to destroy a group of Toyota Hi Lux. I do agree that the SU 22 its a good close support plane even today.
